It was one of those "paperless tickets" things so, because I had paid for her ticket with my credit card, I had to be there with her in person to present my card so she could get in (although I also realized later that it probably would have worked for me just to give her my card for them to scan, except that Ticketmaster had said adamantly otherwise: that the card holder must be there in person to present their card plus photo ID). She had gone very early because it was a general admission concert, so no seats. I joined her later, just before they were let in. Standing in line behind her were some young guys, probably in their early twenties. One of them started to rap. I'm not sure if it was his own creation or someone else's that he had memorized, but he kept it up for two or three minutes and didn't hesitate once. I was impressed. Just after that, he started singing, "The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines." WOW! He didn't have a great voice and he didn't do the whole song, but he did most of it, and it's a very hard song to sing. I wish I had said something to him, but I didn't want to interrupt the moment and, just as he was done, they started letting people in, so the line started to move. I've heard some of Joni's very popular stuff in shopping malls and supermarkets, but how often do you hear some cat singing Dry Cleaner while you're standing in a line somewhere? __________________________________________________________________ Looking for the perfect gift? As always Catherine is one step ahead of me! My offering is less exotic than hers, but at least to me, much more unexpected. I always fall asleep with the tv on, generally HBO or Showtime. Somewhere around 4 am this morning I wake to go to the john and I hear Joni's 'River'. A happy thing! I think, ok, check the name of the movie and then later share it with everyone. So I pick up the remote and click on the "info" button and the name of the movie playing Joni Mitchell singing Joni Mitchell's 'River' was "Live Nude Girls." And I looked at the tv screen and indeed it was. Our Joni has made it into soft core porn! Wooooooo! With her Christmas song! Somehow I think she might enjoy that! So I double checked the name of the movie to be sure (and the live nude girls appeared to be, in fact, actually skating) and then cross checked it to be really sure... and then found Angels in America (Peristroika) on another channel, put that on to redeem myself, and went back to sleep. Some people may like the image of that in their heads. It is kind of bizarre but the imdb thing says it does have a fantasy scene in it so maybe that is it. And I guess if it is R, and given the imdb plot description, it may not be soft core after all, just a movie. Thanks for responding to my post. If posting in reality about live nude girls doing something to Joni's River can't attract attention, then, I give up. Take care, happy Wednesday! It starts with the Travelogue version of "Woodstock", cutting to CSNY's version, then as I recall, Joni's "Dick Cavett Show version", and a new one from Grace Potter. Lot's of good interviews. A lot of stuff I didn't already know. It's on again at 11:00 eastern tonight. It's followed by an excellent Beatles documentary. ~Dan ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Nov 2009 17:25:18 +1100 From: Mark-Leon Thorne Subject: 1988 Interview On Rock Arena Hello everyone. How's the weather treating you? It's starting to get stinking hot here in Emerald City. You might have noticed a message about an interview now in the library that Joni did in Sydney in 1988 for Rock Arena on ABC TV. Rock Arena was a very respected (almost high brow) music show in the '80s on the non commercial network, hosted by Suzanne Dowling. This interview is full of wonderful insights. Mainly because Joni is just allowed to free flow ideas and talk about her upbringing and making the album, Chalk Mark In A Rain Storm. That was a double edged sword for me because, Joni's casual style of speaking made it very difficult to transcribe. I'm happy that it 99.9% accurate. Maybe an "um" or "ah" edited out. I found her description of her two best childhood friends, Peter and Franky fascinating. They seem to be her earliest musical influences. Her description of her, "Our Gang" shenanigans too. We now know that, besides Mr Kratzman, Joni was also taught in the 4th grade by Miss Brady. I was also fascinated by her insights to the recording of the album and, in particular, My Secret Place with Peter Gabriel. It was her intent that their voices would be hard to separate as in the minds of new lovers. A period of time when lovers believe they can become one unit, one mind by allowing entry to those secret places. The album was, of course, recorded at Peter's studio in Bath, England while Larry was across town, working on Ben Orr's (from The Cars) album. Joni also contributed to his album in a small way. Another insight I found fascinating was the evolution of the sounds on The Beat of Black Wings. What was meant to be a "sketch" on talking drum by Manu Katche, became Joni's own voice - "Pah-pa-dapeh-pum we- du". Come on, all together now...
