It's a very nice package; most if not all of the text and photos are there on the website so there's nothing NEW here but the sound is really tremendous. For those of us who are accustomed to a certain amount of hiss and static with our live old Joni recordings, this is amazing stuff, really feels like you are in the room with the performers. Looking forward to the Ohs/Taylor CD as well. Sure would be great if Maple Music could start up a whole series of these, of course that will be determined on its profitability so if you can, pick up a copy. Hilary Swank is her usual excellent self but the screenplay and particularly the editing were weak. The music was totally forgettable, although by the usually good Gabriel Yared. If they had used Joni's Amelia in the closing credits that would have been nice but I guess they wanted to keep everything "period". One critic wrote, "this movie doesn't just not get off the ground, it doesn't even get out of the hangar". However, I did learn quite a bit about Amelia's story from it, so that was worth it. Nah, Joan. Give up on the singalongs (unless you wrote it, of course). It's your usual own twist on a classic. Passingly reminisent, but uniquely you. No one else could sing or arrange it like that. Brilliant. Takes me back! I felt the same way. I also thought it was funny that she would sing "Boney Maroney" (sp?) The feeling I got from the concert is that it was very last-minute, thrown-together and Joni was kind of making it all up as she went along. and I'm not saying that's a bad thing. She seems in very good spirits. Seems? Hmm, that was almost 40 years ago! No wonder Joan sounds so young! How often do we get the opportunity to hear Joan covering someone else's stuff? These recordings might be 39 years old, but some of the material is new to us. Makes me wonder what else might be out there. ________________________________ From: Anita G To: joni@smoe.org Sent: Wed, November 18, 2009 11:41:09 AM Subject: RE: Amchitka, a live show from 1970 on CD, 100% JC Just took my first listen to Carey/Tambourine Man and laughed and laughed and LOL'd at Joni's 'Sing along, everyone, you all know this!' It's a real gem. Travel + Leisure's November issue has a nice piece on driving the canyons of L.A., focusing on fabled Laurel Canyon but also on Coldwater Canyon and Beverly Glen Blvd., all of which run north of Sunset Blvd. up to famous Mulholland Dr. Laurel is where our very own Joni Mitchell used to hang out, and it's worth the price of the magazine ($4.50) just to see the sunny shot of Mitchell on page 52. Many a famous singer has called the area home, including Mama Cass of the Mamas and the Papas ("California Dreaming" was their song, of course). I believe Cass was singing about Laurel when she warbled "young girls are coming to the canyon" in the song Twelve Thirty, one of their lesser known treasures. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 2009 22:31:55 +0100 From: Moni Kellermann Subject: Re: Travel and Leisure magazine Am 18.11.2009 22:07, Wie Cassy so vortrefflich formulierte: > Travel + Leisure's November issue has a nice piece on driving the > canyons of L.A., focusing on fabled Laurel Canyon but also on Coldwater > Canyon and Beverly Glen Blvd., all of which run north of Sunset Blvd. up > to famous Mulholland Dr. http://www.travelandleisure.com/articles/driving-through-los-angeles-canyons/1 No Jonipics, though. moni k. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Nov 2009 08:25:31 +0200 From: "ron g" Subject: joni mention on humour list - ruminations ================================================================== Tasty morsels of twisted thought. --------------------------------- R U M I N A T I O N S --------------------------------- http://www.ruminate.com - ------------------------------------------------------------------ To submit Ruminations: http://www.ruminate.com/submit.htm ================================================================== Ruminations for November 18, 2009 -=++=- The big problem I have with Monday mornings is they tend to ruin what had been a heretofore promising week.
