The child that was born on that day grew up to live an extraordinary life. She became a great artist and during the course of that life, she touched the lives of countless others with her art. So I celebrate you today, Joni Mitchell, for the gift of your words and music. There is no other musician that has made as much of an impact on my life as you have. Your songs have stuck in my mind for over 30 years now and they still re-play themselves more frequently than any others. You have enriched my life more than you will ever know. Happy Birthday, Joni! I love the song. It has some great lyrics in it. Night Ride Home's Song for Sharon. Interesting concept. Reminiscences of childhood, ruminations on life and love. Yes, I see a definite parallel there. After writing my 'Happy Birthday Joni' post and reading yours about 'Come in From the Cold', I started thinking about my college days when I first discovered Joni. Some thoughts occurred to me that went a little bit beyond my usual 'Joni somehow expressed what I was feeling' reason for connecting so strongly with her music. I was a theatre major at a small university in Iowa in the 70s. After being a new kid in my freshman year and having to prove myself, I became a member of a close-knit group of sensitive, creative people. We worked together, often lived together and certainly played together. Some of the friendships that developed then are still vital and important in my life today. Yet I remember times during those years when I felt isolated. I felt that nobody really understood me. I remember going for long walks at night, sometimes in bitter winter cold and while I walked, I would sing. The majority of the songs I sang to myself and to the wind and the night were Joni's songs. Certainly part of my affinity with Joni's lyrics was the frustration caused by the failure to find and sustain a romantic relationship. I think a major theme of 'Come in From the Cold' is the entanglement of sexual attraction and what we call love. Where does one leave off and the other begin? Can they be separated in a romantic relationship? Is this just vulgar electricity, is this the edifying fire? But I think the predominant thematic element in the song is isolation and every human's need to connect with another or others and break through that isolation. Judy Collins expressed this so beautifully in 'Albatross' - 'imprisoned in your bones behind the ising-glass windows of your eyes' and Joni spins the same thread throughout 'Come in From the Cold'. Something about Joni's songs touched what was I was feeling about being different and isolated from everybody else, even though I had very dear, close friends at the time of those late night walks. Somewhere in the love songs and the songs about life and its dual nature there was a feeling of being different, of being outside that pierced my psyche and, I believe, bonded me forever to that music. 'Just living on nerves and feelings, with a weak and a lazy mind/and coming to people's parties/fumbling deaf, dumb and blind.' There's a sense of what I'm trying to convey in those lyrics. And in 'Come in From the Cold' Joni expresses her feeling of at least being perceived as somehow different or apart - 'I am not some stone commission/like a statue in a park. I am flesh and blood and vision/I am howling in the dark.' Howling in the dark is probably what I sounded like to people who may have heard me out in the street singing 'A Case of You' or 'Harry's House/Centerpiece' as they sat in their homes or lay in their beds. But for me, there truly was comfort in that melancholy. And now as I look back I see the truth of the lyric: When I thought life had some meaning When I thought I had some choice And I made some value judgments In a self-important voice But then absurdity came over me And I longed to lose control And all I ever wanted Was just to come in from the cold Yes, I too made some value judgments in a self-important voice. It's part of what drove me out on those walks. And later as the reality of life became increasingly apparent to me, I began to realize how absurd I must have been. And there have been many times when I wished I could just throw it all off, when 'I longed to lose control.' And all I ever wanted on those nights, walking the streets of Cedar Falls, Iowa was just to come in from the cold. Come in from the cold of my isolation to the warmth of human connection. I now think that on some level I was picking this up in Joni's lyrics from the very start of my exploration of her music. Whatever it was, she was touching some very deep and sensitive nerves and sending shivers and vibrations throughout my soul. When I was singing Joni's songs or listening to her records, I felt like there was somebody out there who understood. For a time, with Joni at hand, I could come in from the cold. I felt I could connect with her and feel the warmth of her soul reaching out to mine.
