It was the first time for me as well to experience live performances of Joni's songs. Except for my sister performing Big Yellow Taxi when I was little. It was the only Joni song she knew. It was a thrill being in a packed audience with so many people who are familiar with Joni's songs. There were even a bunch of women dancing over to the side. You weren't one of them, were you? I wanted to dance to at one stage but, you have to have a little decorum in the Sydney Opera House. I was born in Sydney and used to hang out at the Sydney Opera House when I was a little kid because my mother worked in an office tower in the city and I was bored during school holidays but it is still as much a thrill today to go to the Opera House. What an amazing building that is after all these years and a wonderful site. I love how it blends in with the harbour. It's like riding a sail boat around the harbour. Just a really, really big one. I'm in awe every time I see a performance there. I fulfilled a lifelong dream last year: to see the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House. I finally did it when a friend was visiting from Brazil. It was amazing. As for this show, I'm so glad you enjoyed it as much as I did. I was actually looking forward to seeing Tania Bowra. I remember her debut album back in 1989. She has such a powerful voice and a master with a guitar. Although I have a very different background to you, I totally relate to what you say about Chinese Cafe. The passage of time is relentless. I often look at people and imagine how they looked when they were younger. The "Fire and ice" chorus was very cute but, so was the "Snakes and ladders" hand ballet; "Get to the bottom and climb back up. Get to the top and slide back down". It's a shame Kristin didn't sing, "The Dry Cleaner From Drummoyne". Catch you at the next Joni related evening or maybe just for a drink sometime. We do live in the same city after all. When you put it like that, what a funny image. The hot weather approaches but it was nice on Friday night. It's nasty right now though. A warning of the Summer that's on its way. Definitely Night of The Iguana weather tonight. I wish you were here for the concert Gerard. Apparently the Sydney Opera House is not on land. Benelong Point ends at the stairs. The building itself is on big blocks that float on the water so, it kind of is like a permanently moored sailing boat. A really huge one of course. The place is massive. Inside, I find it very elegant and modern at the same time. It's the sort of place that I feel I should behave myself and dress proper (most of the time, I'm a slob). Joni would not have felt that way though. Nothing intimidates her. She wouldn't care if she were performing at the Sydney Opera House or Buckingham Palace. In the recording of her show at the SOH she reduces Australia to a land of spiders, snakes and sheep. Pretty insulting really. Not that it would bother her, she wasn't here long enough to see anything outside of her hotel room. Still, the show was wonderful and a long time coming. I never got to see the original shows at The Basement but Don Whiteman mentioned it to me. That would have been cool. The Basement is a very famous and revered venue in Sydney. Known mostly for jazz, it has hosted many top acts from Australia and all over the world. From Kristin Berardi to BB King. I wish you were all here to see this show. Would you all fit? The Concert Hall at the SOH has a capacity of around 400. A medium sized venue I guess. The place was full. Finally I didn't have to use my imagination as I read your reports, I got to see my own Joni tribute show. The thing is, I would pay to see any one of these women...and I will. Joni would have spread her music much further throughout Australia if she only came back. She only came to Australia twice. Once to perform in 1983 (two shows in Sydney - SOH and Enmore Theatre) and once to promote her album (I guess it was Chalk Mark In A Rain Storm) in 1988. I know she hates flying. Who doesn't? I thought she might feel some connection to this country since her Australian teacher, Mr Kratzman inspired her to take up writing and then there was that fling with the "strange boy". So few crumbs to cling to. Mark in Sydney On 03/11/2009, at 12:19 PM, gerard mclaughlin wrote: > Thanks to both , Mark and Melissa.
