OK, so sue me - I'm WAY late with this month's NEW Joni Covers edition...I blame (in order of importance) 1. The timing of the Jonifest and jet lag/sleep deprivation thereof; 2. Facebook and keeping up with all those apps; 3. My birthday and the ensuing celebrations But all those things aside, Volume #117 in the never-ending series of Joni tribute collections is another group of winners and I'm dang proud to put it out there for y'all. Big thanks to Mark-Leon, Paul, and Richard for their invaluable service and assistance. Some new stuff, some old stuff and some rare stuff. From dead guys to drag queens, I always try to leave no stone unturned in my quest. Here's a link to go get it: http://tinyurl.com/ydq8e5d And here's what's on it: 1. Wendy Matthews - Cherokee Louise: For those of you fortunate enough to catch the upcoming Aussie Joni tribute, here's a teaser - Wendy Matthews will be one of the performers, and here's her take on Cherokee Louise from her 2008 album "She". Wendy is originally from Joni's homeland (Montreal to be specific) and has a pretty long and impressive resume. Her Joni cover is pretty close to Joni's own version but there's nothing wrong with that. 2. The Slow Club Quartet - Both Sides Now: And that would be with emphasis on the "slow"...and that's not a bad thing...they get into it and stretch things out quite jazzily for over 7 minutes. The quartet consists of your classic jazz trio (drums, bass, piano) and adds the warm, soulful vocals of Angela Carole Brown. She uses Joni's 2000 recording as a vocal template but makes it her own at the same time. 3. Rosie Thomas - River: This "River" flows our way by way of Rosie's 2008 holiday album, "A Very Rosie Christmas". She plays around a bit with the basic melody of the song, which is OK as it makes it stand out. Backed by guitar and strings and Rosie's understated vocal clarity, this one's another nice addition to the other 180 versions. 4. Lindsey Buckingham - Big Yellow Taxi: And yet ANOTHER track from the never-released Reprise Joni tribute "A Case Of Joni" sees the light of day. The uber-talented Mr. Buckingham puts his own stamp on it with a slower, pulsating vibe, guitar solo, and the track also features Mick Fleetwood on drums and percussion. 5. Tina Arena - Both Sides Now: I have to admit that I had not heard of Tina Arena, but apparantly she's kind of a big deal. This track comes from her 2008 release "Songs of Love and Loss, Volume 2" which was a follow-up to her well-received "Songs of Love and Loss, Volume 1". (Tina, I won't be impressed until you get to "Songs of Love and Loss, Volume 117, OK?). Having said all that, Tina's voice is wonderful and the orchestra adds a nice warm sound to the recording. It's a keeper. 6. Josie Mills - I Had A King 7. Josie Mills - Carey 8. Josie Mills - Coyote: I wish I could tell you more about Josie, but all I can tell you is that she's obviously a big Joni fan as she put these audio/videos on YouTube with Tim Stone playing some sensitive, lovely guitar. All of them are outstanding, that information becomes evident upon listening. 9. John Barrowman - Both Sides Now: John is certainly no stranger to anyone familiar with the British entertainment industry - he acts, dances, and sings, in film, onTV, and onstage, and this solid version of BSN comes from his 10. Betty Buckley - Amelia: Betty is certainly no newcomer to the world of Joni covers; she appeared WAY back on Volume 1, and she's previously recorded "I Had A King", "River" and "A Case Of You". She had been including "Amelia" in her live show and finally added it as a bonus/exclusive track on her last release, "Quintessence". She ups the tempo just a bit, and the track features a nice little mini-orchestra that complements without overpowering. Coming from an acting background ("Eight Is Enough" is a touchstone for a lot of us) she is able to do a good job of dramatically emoting the lyrics. 11. Maria Joco & Mario Laginha - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: This recording marks a return to Joni covers for Maria & Mario, having recorded BSN a couple years ago. This track is much more percussive and rhythmic than GPPH's usually get, and Maria's voice is very bouncy and playful. Add a sax solo and you've a very satisfying Joni cover indeed. 12. London Pro Musica Choir - Night Ride Home: This one's a bit of an odd bird...when you think of Joni songs done in multi-voiced choral style, you think of the classics, not NRH - not that there's anything wrong with a choral arrangement of the song, it's just unusual, that's all. If you can get past that, the arrangement, the musical colors (flute, guitar, strings) and the voices are nice, even adding a galloping "right along right along right along side" when singing about the horse. 13. John Denver - Both Sides Now: What can I tell you about John Denver that you don't already know? Well, maybe about all you DIDN'T know was this unreleased live 1969 recording of BSN. Give it a listen and let it fill up your senses. 14. Cary Cooper - River: I was expecting a cross between Cary Grant and Gary Cooper; well, I was wrong - didn't even get the gender right. Coming off a 2007 holiday sampler, this guitar and voice cover of Joni's Merry Christmas classic is, as most of them are, quite lovely. Cary reminds me a tad of Shawn Colvin. Based in Dallas, TX, Ms. Cooper makes the rounds on the folk circuit so check her out when you can. 15. Joey Arias - Twisted: If I'm not mistaken, Joey is the guy who is in Penn & Teller's "Aristocrats" doing a Liza Minelli impersonation...Joey is a drag queen and does a variety of performers. His take on "Twisted" is loose and pretty fun. 16. Runaway Express - Woodstock: From their 2007 album called "Woodstock", Runaway Express covers a lot of the musicians and songs that were a part of the 1969 festival as their way of commemorating the event. It's a nice take and features some nice guitar and harmonies. And they slip in another Joni snippet right at the end for good measure. 17. Steve & Deb - Circle Game: Oh, let's see...what can I say about this one that's nice...well, nothing really. The strummed guitar is boring as is Deb's vocal. Steve throws in background vocals in a baritone froggy voice that doesn't add anything to the mix, which is pretty muddy to begin with. So, in a word, it's sucky. I will give tham credit for cutting a couple of verses and bringing it home at just over 3 minutes as they could have slugged it for 5. 18. Sungha Jung - Both Sides Now: Also coming from YouTube is this guitar instrumental of the franchise; quite pretty, but what makes it truly amazing is that the performer is only 12 and is a classical fingerstylist, quite the prodigy. Always nice to have a pretty BSN to bring us back home. And that will closeout another chapter in the expansive book of Joni covers - another 18 tracks worth. Hope you like it, hope you like some of it. Your feedback is always welcome. And he prefers "performance artist" to drag queen :-) Twisted is from his Arias With a Twist show that I went to NYC to see two years ago. It opens as Joey has been kidnapped by aliens and is subjected to probing while he performs a version of *Kashmir. *And that's only the opening! One of the wildest most entertaining shows I've ever seen. Joey is in Australia right now with the show and is then tours all over. If you get a chance to see it, go. And for you fans of Project Runway, Chris March did the fabulous costumes. OK, now resume normal activity. And, as always, thank you fabulous Mr. Muller for collecting these gems. From dead guys to drag queens, I always try to leave > no stone unturned in my quest. > > Here's a link to go get it: > > http://tinyurl.com/ydq8e5d > > And here's what's on it: > 1. Wendy Matthews - Cherokee Louise: For those of you fortunate enough to > catch the upcoming Aussie Joni tribute, here's a teaser - Wendy Matthews > will be one of the performers, and here's her take on Cherokee Louise from > her 2008 album "She". Wendy is originally from Joni's homeland (Montreal > to be specific) and has a pretty long and impressive resume. Her Joni > cover is pretty close to Joni's own version but there's nothing wrong with > that. > 2. The Slow Club Quartet - Both Sides Now: And that would be with emphasis > on the "slow"...and that's not a bad thing...they get into it and stretch > things out quite jazzily for over 7 minutes. The quartet consists of your > classic jazz trio (drums, bass, piano) and adds the warm, soulful vocals > of Angela Carole Brown. She uses Joni's 2000 recording as a vocal template > but makes it her own at the same time. > 3. Rosie Thomas - River: This "River" flows our way by way of Rosie's 2008 > holiday album, "A Very Rosie Christmas". She plays around a bit with the > basic melody of the song, which is OK as it makes it stand out. Backed by > guitar and strings and Rosie's understated vocal clarity, this one's > another nice addition to the other 180 versions. > 4. Lindsey Buckingham - Big Yellow Taxi: And yet ANOTHER track from the > never-released Reprise Joni tribute "A Case Of Joni" sees the light of > day. The uber-talented Mr. Buckingham puts his own stamp on it with a > slower, pulsating vibe, guitar solo, and the track also features Mick > Fleetwood on drums and percussion. > 5. Tina Arena - Both Sides Now: I have to admit that I had not heard of > Tina Arena, but apparantly she's kind of a big deal. This track comes from > her 2008 release "Songs of Love and Loss, Volume 2" which was a follow-up > to her well-received "Songs of Love and Loss, Volume 1". (Tina, I won't be > impressed until you get to "Songs of Love and Loss, Volume 117, OK?). > Having said all that, Tina's voice is wonderful and the orchestra adds a > nice warm sound to the recording. It's a keeper. > 6. Josie Mills - I Had A King > 7. Josie Mills - Carey > 8. Josie Mills - Coyote: I wish I could tell you more about Josie, but all > I can tell you is that she's obviously a big Joni fan as she put these > audio/videos on YouTube with Tim Stone playing some sensitive, lovely > guitar. All of them are outstanding, that information becomes evident upon > listening. > 9. John Barrowman - Both Sides Now: John is certainly no stranger to > anyone familiar with the British entertainment industry - he acts, dances, > and sings, in film, onTV, and onstage, and this solid version of BSN comes > from his > 10. Betty Buckley - Amelia: Betty is certainly no newcomer to the world of > Joni covers; she appeared WAY back on Volume 1, and she's previously > recorded "I Had A King", "River" and "A Case Of You". She had been > including "Amelia" in her live show and finally added it as a > bonus/exclusive track on her last release, "Quintessence". She ups the > tempo just a bit, and the track features a nice little mini-orchestra that > complements without overpowering. Coming from an acting background ("Eight > Is Enough" is a touchstone for a lot of us) she is able to do a good job > of dramatically emoting the lyrics. > 11. Maria Joco & Mario Laginha - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: This recording > marks a return to Joni covers for Maria & Mario, having recorded BSN a > couple years ago. This track is much more percussive and rhythmic than > GPPH's usually get, and Maria's voice is very bouncy and playful. Add a > sax solo and you've a very satisfying Joni cover indeed. > 12. London Pro Musica Choir - Night Ride Home: This one's a bit of an odd > bird...when you think of Joni songs done in multi-voiced choral style, you > think of the classics, not NRH - not that there's anything wrong with a > choral arrangement of the song, it's just unusual, that's all. If you can > get past that, the arrangement, the musical colors (flute, guitar, > strings) and the voices are nice, even adding a galloping "right along > right along right along side" when singing about the horse. > 13. John Denver - Both Sides Now: What can I tell you about John Denver > that you don't already know? Well, maybe about all you DIDN'T know was > this unreleased live 1969 recording of BSN. Give it a listen and let it > fill up your senses. > 14. Cary Cooper - River: I was expecting a cross between Cary Grant and > Gary Cooper; well, I was wrong - didn't even get the gender right. Coming > off a 2007 holiday sampler, this guitar and voice cover of Joni's Merry > Christmas classic is, as most of them are, quite lovely. Cary reminds me a > tad of Shawn Colvin. Based in Dallas, TX, Ms. Cooper makes the rounds on > the folk circuit so check her out when you can. > 15. Joey Arias - Twisted: If I'm not mistaken, Joey is the guy who is in > Penn & Teller's "Aristocrats" doing a Liza Minelli impersonation...Joey is > a drag queen and does a variety of performers. His take on "Twisted" is > loose and pretty fun. > 16. Runaway Express - Woodstock: From their 2007 album called "Woodstock", > Runaway Express covers a lot of the musicians and songs that were a part > of the 1969 festival as their way of commemorating the event. It's a nice > take and features some nice guitar and harmonies. And they slip in another > Joni snippet right at the end for good measure. > 17. Steve & Deb - Circle Game: Oh, let's see...what can I say about this > one that's nice...well, nothing really. The strummed guitar is boring as > is Deb's vocal. Steve throws in background vocals in a baritone froggy > voice that doesn't add anything to the mix, which is pretty muddy to begin > with. So, in a word, it's sucky. I will give tham credit for cutting a > couple of verses and bringing it home at just over 3 minutes as they could > have slugged it for 5. > 18. Sungha Jung - Both Sides Now: Also coming from YouTube is this guitar > instrumental of the franchise; quite pretty, but what makes it truly > amazing is that the performer is only 12 and is a classical fingerstylist, > quite the prodigy. Always nice to have a pretty BSN to bring us back home. > > And that will closeout another chapter in the expansive book of Joni > covers - another 18 tracks worth. I'm looking forward to this. (Useless post that is, but I can't contain my excitement.) I am NOT being sarcastic, in case anyone's wondering. Was any of this stuff ever available as a boot? I don't remember even hearing about it before. I'm looking forward to Phil Ochs' and JT's stuff too. This was such a great time musically.
