Personally, I love the interior descriptions and geeting the feel of the place. And dear Jeannie and the bird. There's a girl after my heart. And Patti sending roses and Kenny mugs and things. What great ideas. Wish I thought of that. Oh well... There seems to have been so many great sets of music. It's a Joni Fest! There just HAD to be! Cassy sounds universally like she really hit the High Tissue count. I so remember sitting last year at Hoycombe in the front very close to Robin singing and there really was an odd moment when she looked absolutely like Joni. I remember writing to the list about it. I think maybe she does indeed channel Joni. Weird. I knew having been so blown away by Robin and Dave last year at Holycombe that seeing them in their own backyard with their own band would be something not to be missed. And I missed it! Woe indeed. It's now Monday morning. Get up Blackburn and get that zipped up music file sorted :~))) See you soon Lieve. Will 2 days be enough to tell me all about it? We may have to book in a week Love to everyone Anita ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Sep 2009 13:14:05 +0000 From: Patti Parlette Subject: RE: Joni reference on Brothers and Sisters Rusty confirmed: yes, the Rachel Griffiths character said that "Unfettered and alive" line, as she plans a trip to Paris to find adventure and love :) **** Merci beaucoup, Frere Rusty. Just finished unloading the cargo van from JoniFest and I am bloody knackered, as we say in the old country. But boy was it a good one!!! (Cut to one hour later, three glasses of wine and some left over Robin's famous fest lasagne in the belly) I'll leave it to others to itemize the days' events - I was in "work mode" most of the time trying to keep the sound system happening and Robin was starting prep on the next meal as soon as the dishwasher was loaded from the prior one - but there was a wonderful easing into the groove I witnessed. People got reaquainted, newly aquainted, got some drinks inside them and a night's sleep to adjust for travel and in some cases jet lag. By day two it was easy; the sound was dialed in, the sets were being rehearsed for the evening, and the beauty of Idyllwild's mountain top pine forest was being felt by all. The weather was ideal, warm but not brutally hot, clear and refreshing. Dry, to be sure; you have to swab copious amounts of lotion and lip balm on at 6500 feet altitude above the desert floor. The Creekstone Inn turned out to be the ideal location, welcoming, large and yet homey, with its big living room "concert" area and creatively themed rooms with special appointments that elevated them far from their motel counterparts. Our hosts, innkeepers Laurie and Darrell, could not have been nicer, attending to every request and showing a wonderful enthusiasm at being part of this special event. Laurie, it turns out from a private conversation she had with Robin yesterday, had been an opera singer in her youth, Julliard bound, derailed by circumstance in having to undergo node surgery, which left her unable to sing for two years, by which time the career train had left the station. I have to salute my lovely wife Robin Adler for her can-do attitude in taking on this fest. She is not a JMDL member, and not the kind of Joni fan that many of us are, wanting to debate minutiae and see the rarest-of-the-rare footage as it is unearthed. And yet she sings Joni music better than anyone I can think of (including Joni herself in recent years) and connects with the music in a heartfelt and pure way unencumbered by too much self comparison. For her, singing Joni music is richly challenging for the depth of the melodies and lyrics, as they afford a singer boundless opportunities to express nuanced emotion. She was not the teenager who marveled at how her interior angst was being expressed by this Canadian singer. No, Robin began singing at age 35, and was encouraged by her best friend to sign up for a vocal ensemble class at community college after her friend heard her singing along with Dog Eat Dog. At this year's fest she "manned" the kitchen and put her other skills to work preparing gorgeous food for us each day; until Saturday night that is. Come Saturday, she whipped off her apron and donned her flowing diva robes to front Mutts of the Planet as we played a marathon three hour show of the most challenging Joni material ever recorded. Coming from a jazz background and used to improvising and riffing with the band, Robin is ideally suited to Joni's jazzier music. And it is this that elevates the show from being a mere "cover band" thing. Every gig the tunes go somewhere different. It is not unlike doing a show of Gershwin or Cole Porter tunes and taking off into the stratosphere with the original tunes acting as the underlying fabric. Except that Joni tunes are much more complex in lyric, harmony and form. The memorization alone is an Everest to be climbed, as we avoid the music-stand-with-lyrics scenario. The Mutts, bless 'em, were outstanding. They came to play. These guys have a profound respect for Joni music, even though a couple of them are recent Joni converts. They play with zeal and extend each song artistically in their own ways often far beyond the recorded source. Some tunes we do pretty stock (how many ways CAN you do Coyote?) and some are like blank canvasses to be painted anew. Woodstock becomes a musical screenplay in which the seeker walks alone along the road towards the festival and joins up with another kindred spirit-as they approach the stage the music becomes a pulsating roar as the Who blast through "Pinball Wizard"-by the end all is silent and the eery admonition "and we've got to get ourselves back to the garden" echoes into space. "Dreamland" begins as a carnival samba and quickly morphs into an epic funk odyssey with the rhythm section of Jeff Olson and Dave Curtis getting down with their bad selves. "Black Crow" gets the rock vibe it always seemed to want. And so on....I can't even convey enough my respect for these musicians. As music director for this band project I could not be more exhilarated with the sensitivity with which these guys reinvent Joni music, not to mention their enthusiasm at taking on this relatively unmined motherlode of brilliant material, Bob's covers database notwithstanding. It seems digital technology has allowed footage, pics and comments to be uploaded before the reverb tail has trailed off so to speak, so some of you have seen FaceBook footage of stuff I didn't even know was being captured within minutes of the event. As weird as that is it is wonderful that others can now be virtual festers. We had the odd experience of seeing Laura Stanley watching us live on Skype in the front row. And Jimmy it seems was working the thumb on his cell phone snapping pics and video into the blogosphere as each moment unfurled. There's more to be said, but I should at this point refer to my opening statement. Even though it is only 5pm my own pillow in my own bed is sounding REALLY appealing about now..,,well maybe just one or two more pinot grigios! love, Dave ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Sep 2009 01:16:58 +0000 From: Patti Parlette Subject: quick Jonifest report Chere chere Lieve Lieve! Loved your report and the description of your "Spring" room. Was there spring along the ditches, and crickets clicking in the ferns, too? ; ) Jody called Saturday night to fill me in on all the wonder, and she also talked about Cassy's tear-jerking (in a good way, of course) performance. And so many others -- I'm sorry for only mentioning one. Loved all the ones I saw on FB thanks to Craig and Jimmy. And she raved about Dave and Robin's organization and hard work and even cooking....omelets and stews! And St. Jeannie of Assisi and her sweet bird. Lovely story! And also, out of the fire like Catholic saints, comes St. Jude/Jody, patron saint of lost objects. As "For the Roses" I sent, I had the "scathingly brilliant idea" a few weeks ago when Jody announced on FB that she and Lindsay were in Room #1. LOL -- I heard the word "room" and immediately thought of "flowers round my room." It was hard keeping the secret, but I did. And for the Joni record, there were thirty of them, one for each attendee. Here's the card that accompanied them, because they were really for everyone: BEE GEE, DAHLINK! I COULDN'T AFFORD TO RENT YOU A GRAND PIANO, BUT HERE ARE SOME FLOWERS TO PUT 'ROUND YOUR ROOM. FLOWERS OF DEEP FEELING, FROM ME & BOBBY MCMURPHEE. HAVE FUN & SHINE LIKE THE SUN! XOPBJXO! Yes, they were from Smurf, too. And a "Thank you from Idyllwild" that made my weekend, with another Smurf mention: Dear Patti, > > What an amazing surprise!!!
