Les asked me to review the show at the Sydney Opera House on October 30 for jonimitchell.com. I'm really looking forward to it. I tried to help the organisers to publicise the show to the Aussie Joni fans but I don't think I was much help. I really couldn't think of any commonality between the people who are fans of Joni's music apart from the fact that they all appreciate her work. What is the demographic of the Joni Mitchell fanbase? Anyway, I am really excited about this show. Not only because it will be the first time I will hear Joni's music performed in public by anyone but, this is a dream lineup. Some of Australia's most respected female sing/songwriters: Wendy Matthews (a countrywoman of Joni's), Katie Noonan (she will do amazing things with Joni's jazz and a range to rival Joni's), Tania Bowra (hoping she'll do some of the lyrically deeper, grungier songs like Roses Blue maybe). All at the Sydney Opera House - arguably Australia's greatest scrum of nuns. I'll report here first. Mark in Sydney PS There is a remote possibility of a DVD of this show being released. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Sep 2009 04:53:34 -0700 (PDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: RE: Mary Travers, now with a little Joni content - --- On Thu, 9/17/09, Patti Parlette wrote: > > Do my eyes serve me, only to deceive me? I can see how people could mistake them though with the blonde hair and the high cheekbones. We've lost another great one. I love her voice. This is a very cool video that I had not seen before. When Joni sings her verse it didn't really sound like her. It must be a weird keep for her. She sounded more like herself when she was singing the chorus. Thanks for sending Patti Luv Paz On Sep 16, 2009, at 11:43 PM, Patti Parlette wrote: Holy merde, Joniamigos! Particularly love her version of 'Across the Universe' on her album of Beatles covers - listen @ http://www.myspace.com/katienoonan Should be a great show - looking forward to your report, Mark. Since it's a jm.com assignment it might be worth contacting Rachel Gaudry to see if you can get a back stage pass. best to all PaulC NP 'The Ransom' by Madison Violet (fab Canadian gals touring the UK) _________________________________ On Tour Across the Pond http://ontouracrossthepond.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Sep 2009 22:36:31 -0700 From: "Randy Remote" Subject: Re: Joni and Mary and Mama Cass From: "Patti Parlette" > Check this out: > > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aYAUE6is7I&feature=related > > I've never seen this before. Have you? I had not seen it, but posted about it a couple of weeks ago: RR "The Mama Cass Program" This is the 1969 pilot for a Mama Cass show that wasn't picked up. She sings BSN with Joni and sings I Shall Be Released with Joni and Mary Travers. Aired once on network TV and never again. Released last Tuesday on DVD. $12 on Amazon. Is this footage part of the video tree? From the SF Chronicle review: Thus she could banter and sing with guest star Buddy Hackett in one segment and then, in the next, sing as one among equals with Mary Travers and Joni Mitchell. Mitchell's rendition of "Both Sides Now" is a highlight of the show, just lovely. Another surprising highlight: the commercials. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Sep 2009 17:58:48 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Joni Covers, Retro Edition - Volume 42 Hi all, Apologize for being late, it's been a hectic week. Thank you, Patti! Mary is so beautiful in that sea-green dress with her lovely blonde hair. Joni must have been using her chest voice on her verse because it really hardly sounds like her. This made me think of seeing Joni with Dylan and Van Morrison at the Gorge in '98. Van & Joni unexpectedly joined Bobby on stage for 'I Shall Be Released'. Joni in a fedora hat, giggled because she couldn't remember the words and made up her own. Cass was such a wonderful singer. I miss her too. And I agree with Gary Z. about '500 Miles'. I thought of that one too when I heard of Mary's passing yesterday. No more 500 miles away from home for her. She's finally there. Oh, and 'Leavin' on a Jet Plane' was another favorite of mine. Mary's vocals were always so soulful and nothing but honest.
