I pulled out my hammer dulcimer and instead of using the wooden hammers I used a guitar pick and was able to match both the exact sound and melody of the part on Roses Blue. That may the "experimental" Joni, playing a traditional folk instrument in an untraditional way. Mine is pretty out of tune and the strings are so old I'm afraid to change their tuning but I may record a clip for you guys to hear. Ah!! Think that might be the answer! I used to have (still have but don't use anymore) a Korg 03R/W Sound Module with a hammered dulcimer patch on it - sounded quite similar, now that I think about it. Anyone know what keyboards or sound modules Joni was using back then? Must admit I'm not that impressed with the ones she used on 'Shine'. best to all PaulC NP 'Dusty Pages' by James McMurtry (who is playing at The Borderline here in London next month) _________________________________ On Tour Across the Pond http://ontouracrossthepond.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Sep 2009 15:40:56 +0100 From: Jamie Zubairi Home Subject: Re: Roses Blue instrument Could she have possibly been playing a piano's strings? (i.e. from an open grand piano) And while I don't know the brand of the keyboards she played on Shine, apparently they were the same throughout (she was advised to use different keyboards as the same brands tend to have the same vibrato (or something like that) which if used together, just sound more fake than if they'd used different brands.) 2009/9/16 Paul Castle > Dave - your guitar pick theory could well be right > but I was just about to send this idea > > Corey wrote: > > > They also have Joni credited as playing keyboards on > > the album when there are no keyboards on the album. > > Ah!! I am so very sad tonight. Thank you for interrupting the sorrow, by sharing it. Where have all the songbirds gone? Gone. Like the turn of a page. Everyone is all emotions and abstractions on Facebook tonight. I put up a few youtubes, and while googling Mary Travers, came across some images. Photo beauties. Do my eyes serve me, only to deceive me? I swear the fifth picture from the left, on the top line, is our Joni. Or am I seeing things, unable to get a good grip on my grief? http://tinyurl.com/po5a87 Mary died in Danbury Hospital here in CT. She lived on the road to Baljenie (in Redding, CT) near my old hometown (Monroe, CT). Inside you'll hear a sigh, a foggy lullabye, there is your post from meeee. Singing a song about the love between my brothers and my sisters, all over this Joni-land, Patti P. P.S. Her gift goes on. We will always have her music, and her spirit. Rest in peace, dear Mary. And thank you. "Thank you, girl, for loving" all of humanity the way that you do. (And we'll talk in present tenses.) "If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace." -- John Lennon http://www.imaginepeace.com/ Me too, Jerry. I'm so very sorry to hear that Mary Travers has died. Peter, Paul and Mary were the first group/concert I ever saw and I absolutely loved them. I was probably about 12, and had my mother drive me and a couple friends down to the Masonic Temple in Detroit to see them. They changed my musical life. Their performance was electrifying. I think I saw them three different times and they always met their fans after their concerts. I have some old programs, one which has all three of their autographs. They turned me on to songwriters...I might have never have discovered Laura Nyro, Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, John Denver and then other writers like Joni Mitchell without them. Listen to "The Cruel War" or "500 Miles" where Mary's voice shines. How terribly she will be missed. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32886244/?gt1=43001 Gary Z.
