I too would love to know if there's any footage of this performance. That day in Edmonton was one of the most incredible of my life and I met up with some wonderful people whom I have often wondered are on the list at all. One of the luckiest parts of those days in '94 was that we didn't even know Joni was playing when we left the UK for a 3 week holiday booked in Canada. We saw an advert in a Calgary paper quite by chance and tried to get tickets. In addition, there was only one possible day that we could see Joni, as our flight home was booked for a Friday morning and the festival was 4 days, Thursday till Sunday. Only if Joni played the Thursday evening would we be able to go - and, of course, amazingly, she was playing that Thursday night! So we drove from Calgary and planned to go back for our flight home first thing Friday morning. We were told we had tickets booked, (but they didn't show and that was another long story). When we eventually arrived in Edmonton, we were queuing up in the early afternoon outside the festival site sharing Joni stories with 4 other people. Steph thought she heard Joni sound checking. We had by chance in the morning met the event organiser (anoher long story) who had given us his business card, so we nipped round the side, showed the business card to security together with flowers we had for Joni (just in case we happened to bump into her, as you do) and they let us in to the sound check to give Joni the flowers! She played piano during the sound check I remember, but didn't at the gig. Joni was most gracious, as always, liked the flowers and we had a little chat. She then was driven off back to her hotel BUT we were in the arena and it was such a chance to bag the best places for the gig! We decided to take a risk so Steph stayed on in the arena after the sound check, helped out and looked like she was official whilst I went back to the get the bags and camera we'd left outside. Steph was in the arena for about four or five hours and nobody asked her to leave because she was helpful, I guess! I went back out to get our stuff which was on the pavement, but the queue had moved but fortunately our new friends had looked after our bags. I was so grateful that and they took care of it for us and carried and kept our bags safe when the queue moved. I told them all about the sound check, but it was also quite a nightmare because then Steph and I's tickets hadn't shown up at the desk and she was inside and I was out! However, I managed to buy a couple more (using Steph's credit card) BUT the good bit was that Steph had grabbed us and our new friends the front area!!! It was FANTASTIC. Whilst waiting for the show to start, we were all interviewed by the Edmonton Journal about our love of Joni's music and we all had tales to tell. I think one couple were honey mooning at the gig and the others had driven across from Ottawa just to see Joni. Of course, we were over from the UK on the very last day of our holiday. I hadn't seen Joni play since Paris in 83,so to be there for this first appearance in 10 years was extraordinary to me and then to see Joni play AND make the front page ourselves the next morning - well, it was magical. I have often gone on and on about synchronicity on this list, but those few days, getting to the gig, meeting Joni again and all the events along the way are a book in themselves, as you can see! I'd love to know if there's any footage of this event. It would bring back the most wonderful memories (not that I've forgotten much, it would seem :))) Love Anita Date: Fri, 4 Sep 2009 14:20:32 -0400 From: Susan McNamara Subject: Edmonton Folk Festival 1994 It was billed as Joni's first appearance on stage in a decade. The first song out of the gate was "Last Chance Lost" from her new album Turbulent Indigo. I know I have this performance in a box somewhere on cassette, but did we also have that on video? Is it on the website somewhere? Being lazy, thanks, Sue _____ I am using the Free version of SPAMfighter . We are a community of 6 million users fighting spam. All of the songs on that album were available on her MySpace page but they've been taken down. You can get those tracks from Amazon. I've featured some of them in my covers collection.
