Hi Maybe this is old news, but when I was in Norway there was a big story in the papers: Joni's Grandmother comes from a farm in western Norway near Bergen. Actually it is the family of my brothers Norwegian wife with the familyname of Farestveit. Here is the link to a paper: http://www.bt.no/kultur/Ut-fra-Moelvi-munner-Mitchells-musikk--893641.html Maybe Odd can translate? Besr regards Henning Hi! (right links) I'm about to to close down the sale of our 4 CDs with a price that only covers copy, copyright, my shipping, shipping of CDbaby: 10$ If you allready have a copy it might be a funny gift for host/dinner? A friend of mine made me listen to Harry Nilsson. I was impressed with his phrasing -- for reasons I don't need to explain here, I 'm impressed when a singer can put a million words into one line and make it sound completely easy and natural. Does anyone know of any relationship between him and Joni? As far as I can see they have never performed together. How come...? Best Bene Who wishes she would keep up more regularly with the list... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Aug 2009 09:31:27 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: Harry Nilsson and Joni(?) That's a good question, Bene - two of my favorites, and I don't have any recollection of any intersection. They both appear on the "Practical Magic" soundtrack, but that's about it. They both recorded orchestral standards albums, although Nilsson's was done way before it had become an overdone cliche. My response will be useless, since I'm not aware of any collaboration between Harry and Joan. Too bad though! I'm a big Harry fan and have been listening to a lot of his stuff lately. What a character he was! He did hang out with John Lennon ("Impossible Dreamer") though, so there's a bit of a connection. They seemed to get wasted together a lot! - --- On Mon, 8/10/09, Ms Bene Lux wrote: > From: Ms Bene Lux > Subject: Harry Nilsson and Joni(?) > To: "Joni List" > Received: Monday, August 10, 2009, 8:01 AM > A friend of mine made me listen to > Harry Nilsson. I have been a long-time fan of Harry Nilsson (and of course Joni Mitchell), and to my knowledge, this is the first mention of Harry on this list. One unusual thing about Harry was he never performed live. He was a master of the studio recording. He often overdubbed his own voice dozens of times; he had elaborate arrangements with studio musicians, but never mentioned anyone in the credits. I don't know if he generally accompanied himself, or always had others play with him (although he clearly had some keyboard skills on display in this amusing u-tube clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dswVK5si45M). An excellent documentary film on his career exists ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_is_Harry_Nilsson%3F_(And_Why_Is_Everybody_Talkin%27_About_Him)), but to my knowledge, has never been made generally available to the public. My personal favorite albums are "Harry", "Nilsson sing Newman", and "The Point", which is a beloved parable about tolerance that will amaze people of all ages. I've been listening to "the Point" with my daughter since we first discovered it 8 years ago, and we will never get tired of it. ~Dan On Mon, Aug 10, 2009 at 10:28 AM, Catherine McKay wrote: > My response will be useless, since I'm not aware of any collaboration > between Harry and Joan. She makes you feel grateful to have lived to have witnessed such beauty and grace, truly heavenly. But I had the misfortune of listening to Dan Fogelberg's version and to be polite all I can say is that his version was just POOR. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Aug 2009 16:06:50 -0700 (PDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Harry Nilsson and Joni(?) Dan and anyone else interested. Maybe some of you already have these, but here are links to some mp3 files. One is Harry Nilsson's demos (demoes?) for the Robert Altman "Popeye" film - a strange film, but I love the music. This is mostly Harry singing, but a few sung by cast members for the movie. The song "He needs me," sung here by Shelley Duval, was also used in "Punch drunk love" with Adam Sandler and Emily Watson. The other is his Monkees demoes, since he wrote a number of songs for the Monkees and I understand was good friends with Mickey Dolenz. Downloads should be good for seven days. - --- On Mon, 8/10/09, Dan Olson wrote: > From: Dan Olson > Subject: Re: Harry Nilsson and Joni(?) > To: "Joni List" > Received: Monday, August 10, 2009, 5:04 PM > I have been a long-time fan of Harry > Nilsson (and of course Joni Mitchell), > and to my knowledge, this is the first mention of Harry on > this list. Commander Cody was one of the openers and described it as one of the worst concerts he'd witnessed. anyways, in the article Jimmy Page says "The line-up we hoped for was Fairport Convention, Dire Straits, Little Feat and Joni Mitchell." And then another person is quoted as saying "When the time came to get support, nobody wanted to play with Led Zeppelin" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Aug 2009 21:28:46 -0500 From: Michael Paz Subject: This JUST in!!!!!
