Overall, they are without peer in performing Joni's music. They are masters. Their covers never sound like imitation but the creation of something new with reverence to the original. Yes I wish you were able to make this year's JoniFest or that we had some dates on the east coast...maybe someday. Our Joni band, Mutts of the Planet, will be playing a whole concert at JoniFest and recording it all, I hope for a live CD release. Down to You will be on it as well as some rarities and a bunch of our own arrangements of Joni favorites. The new line up (as of this year) is amazing, as we have a bass player who doubles on keys and is brilliant at both, so the orchestral layers are even more dead on, and we have five vocalists so the harmonies are pretty sweet. thanks again, Dave On Jul 10, 2009, at 12:00 AM, onlyJMDL Digest wrote: > Date: Thu, 9 Jul 2009 22:12:40 EDT > From: PassScribe@aol.com > Subject: Re:Joni Covers Vol 114 > > I'm still catching up on reading/answering emails after > returning from > our vacation Monday night and July 2nd is up. > So, Bob, you want feedback on the Joni Covers Volume 114? > Well, I > never thought anyone could produce a cover of Down To You that I > could compare > to Joni's, but Robin Adler's vocals, Barnaby Finch's piano > expertise, and > Dave Blackburn's production make this a masterful tribute to Joni's > original. > Every time I hear that song I'm reminded of just why Joni received > a grammy > for the arrangement in 1974. > I've heard Robin & Dave's work before (from the Jonifest > recordings) > but I wish Adler, Finch & Blackburn were closer to me so I could > catch them > live sometime. > I'll listen to the rest of the cover tunes tomorrow; thanks > for all > your work, Bob. > > Kenny B ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Jul 2009 10:02:27 -0400 From: Robbi Kearns Subject: John Kelly's Paved Paradise Redux: The Art of Joni Mitchell coming to San Francisco Hi All - I wanted to let you know that John Kelly will be performing "Paved Paradise Redux: The Art of Joni Mitchell" in San Francisco at the Rrazz Room in the Nikko Hotel on July 30-August 2, 2009 at 9pm. Joni: A Tribute To The Legendary Joni Mitchell is an extravaganza of Australian female artists paying tribute to our Joni. From the website, www.joni.com.au Joni Mitchell is one of the defining artists of contemporary music. As a recording artist, she has gathered the highest accolades in popular music, including nine Grammy awards and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The poetry, insight and originality of her music have influenced so many artists that contemporary songwriting without her is unimaginable, and the sheer beauty of her songs have thrilled music lovers through the five decades of her career. This October, an ensemble of Australia's foremost singers and musicians will present an extraordinary series of concert tributes to this legendary artist. Katie Noonan, Wendy Matthews, Kristin Berardi, Tania Bowra, Louise Perryman, Virna Sanzone and Rachel Gaudry, together with an outstanding 12-piece band, will pay homage to one of the most respected singer-songwriters in music. Dates announced so far are as follows - October 23 - Hamer Hall, Melbourne. October 30 - Sydney Opera House, Sydney. November 4 - QPAC Concert Hall, Brisbane. E-mail notification is being taken on the website for pre-release tickets. No word on the price yet. Some artists, I have not yet heard of but you can click on their photo to be taken to their website or MySpace page and get a taste of their style. Katie Noonan will be known to everyone with her operatic vocal, jazz stylings. Wendy Matthews is the veteran and a legend in her own right and, being Canadian herself, it was just a matter of time before she paid tribute to her countrywoman. Can't wait for her performance. Tania Bowra was an old fave of mine whom I haven't heard from since the 1980s. I've checked them all out and every one of these women have amazing voices and will all do Joni justice, I'm sure. This has been a long time coming and should be sensational. I was thinking, we should have a mini OzFest before the show so we can all meet. The majority of Australian JMDL members seem to be in Sydney so, how about we get together before the Opera House show? Anyone interested? Melissa, Don? Thanks to Les for pointing this out to me and for posting it on www.jonimitchell.com Mark in Sydney NP I'm Just Another Girl - Kristin Berardi PS Bob, looks like an influx of Aussie Joni covers might be coming your way. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Jul 2009 22:35:33 -0700 (PDT) From: Laura Stanley Subject: The Magdalene Laundries http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kU1Zymqlhko&feature=related ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2009 #185 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe
