First of all, I finally got to meet the infamous Paz in person. I've only been told for over 2 years that I need to play tunes with him. (the one Jonifest I attended -- 2007 -- was the one he didn't attend)... Everyone who kept telling me about him was right, of course! What a blast! And Randy Remote - so fun to meet you and have you there on Sunday as well! Micro-fest -- I like that. Hope we can all get together again soon. We covered quite a few Joni tunes -- For the Roses, The Priest, Morning Morgantown, Big Yellow Taxi, Song For Sharon, The Dawntreader, Cactus Tree, Nathan La Franeer, Case of You, Furry Sings the Blues, For Free, People's Parties, Urge for Going, Woodstock, Little Green -- help me out here, I know there were more... which other Joni masterpieces did we play? Also, it was just amazing to meet and hear the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. What a sweet group of characters! I had a great time being amateur photographer and traveling with everyone. The Kate Wolf Fest was so fun and happy (and hot!), and how incredible to see so much talent in one place: Pres. Hall Jazz Band's array of fun tunes and New Orleans spirit, Richard Thompson's amazing guitar playing, Buddy Miller's beautiful voice, and collaborations between Buddy, Patty Griffin, Emmylou Harris, and Shawn Colvin. Definitely a weekend to remember. (and I'm definitely still staying up just as late, apparently!) The Kate Wolf Fest itself was one of the most beautiful and well organized fests I have ever been to. Patty did an amzing set on Saturday night and her Buddy and the girls both sat in with her as well. I love the Nosfell cover of Roses Blue, but what happens there at the end? Sounds like everything gets whisked away in a spell. Annot Rhul's Roses Blue reminds me of Hotel California... but much more spooky. It could be the theme for a horror flick or a movie about people on acid. Trips me out. I love the jazzy One for Joni!!! It is the ice in my tea! Way cool! The drum and bass jazz is interesting and carried me into the song in a different way than any other Ladies of the Canyon cover has on Lisa Hilton's cover. It reminds me of the Jungle Line a little. Robin Adler's Down to You is so Joni like in the opening, I expected Joni to start singing. Robin's voice is very beautiful. I'm wooed by this cover! Her Shadow's and Light is very nice too. Maria Pia de Vito's cover of My Old Man is reminds of of the Polish singer, Basia's style. I'd like to hear Basia cover Joni. Has she ever? Saxkartel's cover of Goodbye Pork-Pie Hat is interesting. I see ballet dancers in my mind as I listen to it. Ken Elkinson's cover of Blue is deep and moves me. Deep blue. I really like the guitar in Franko Morone's A Case of You, and her accent is cute. I like it better than Anthony Anderson's overall. Cool... a French cover of Both Sides Now, Neca Falk. Beautiful! It's got me swinging in my porch swing. I've heard Both Sides Now. The piano start of Big Yellow Taxi made me wonder if Elton John would start singing. Reminds me of Crocodile Rock until the choral singers came it... then I started having a Queen feeling. To me this is like a Bohemian Rhapsody Big Yellow Taxi. The Circle Game got me thinking of Snoopy and the gang dancing somewhere. Thanks for this covers album!!! It has definitely given me some relief in this July heat wave here in Dixie. (Not) Thanks for the detail, Simon - information about these sessions has been somewhat sketchy, totally absent in every bio I've ever read and in fact even your own intricately detailed Chronology totally omits both of the recording sessions you make reference to. Given the alternate takes of some of the songs (the "Wilding Version" of Circle Game for one), a total of 10 or so tracks emerged from the Siegel-Schwall sessions, certainly not an "album" in the sense of STAS being her first album but as a collector nearly an album's worth of tracks. Certainly Joni fans will gobble up as much of this stuff as we can get! Different subject - I recently noticed the excellent addition "Inspired by Joni - The Albums": http://jonimitchell.com/music/inspiredbyjoni_albums.cfm and have a couple of comments: 1. The list omits "Another Blue" by Volker Niehusmann & Christiane Weber, 12 tracks all of which are Joni covers. If you need more information on it let me know and I'll be happy to pass it along. 2. You're showing both "Came Upon A Child Of God" and "This Flight Tonight" which are as I'm sure you know are the same recordings, just repackaged and re-shuffled with a different album title and cover picture. You may also want to list (2) other repackagings of the same tracks, marketed digitally on Amazon, I-Tunes, and other digital music outlets as Joni Tributes under the listing "Tribute Stars" and also "The Big Yellow Taxis". Thanks for all you do for the JM community - it is GREATLY appreciated! Regarding the Nosfell cover - as I said, the audio comes from a DVD so there may have been something going on visually that doesn't come through in the audio. Just a guess as I have not seen the DVD. Both of the Roses Blue covers on this one are VERY haunting, of course the chord and lyrical structure of the song lends itself to that. The Polish singer Basia has five albums out but no Joni covers on them. Neca's BSN cover is Yugoslavian/Slovenian, not French. BSN has been recorded in French, however - most famously by Nana Mouskouri who also recorded it in English. Glad the cool tunes are able to slake your southern thirst - thanks again for your thoughts. I hope you get to come down to JoniFest in Sept. as It is looking better for me to be able to attend. I should be able to confirm next week and book my air and stuff and send in my monies. You forgot Sex Kills and Amelia. I look forward to our next jam session hopefully sooner than later.
