This month's crop offers up yet another cornucopia of selections for you from all around the world. A big thanks to Monica in Holland and Dave Blackburn for their contributions. You can find the download here: http://tinyurl.com/lh2l7a (it's called Big Yellow Taxi...I forgot to rename the zip file - D'oh!) And here's a rundown of the tunes: 1. Lisa Hilton - Ladies Of The Canyon: We get things started with a COOL jazz instrumental by pianist Lisa Hilton - some may remember Lisa's 2007 recording of BSN, and she has just recently put Woodstock on her new release. A huge jazz and Joni fan and her band is excellent as well. 2. Annot Rhul - Roses Blue: Hailing from Norway, Annot Rh|l is not a band in the traditional sense of the word, but a pseudonym for Sigurd L|hr Tonna, the man behind the music and arrangements. He plays the guitar, keys and effects, sometimes bass as well as other peculiar instruments. The pyschedelic spacy track comes from his 2007 release. 3. London Pro Musica Choir - Big Yellow Taxi 4. London Pro Musica Choir - The Circle Game: Despite the name, LPMC is a Canadian choral group and they are 39 years strong. BYT is pretty lively for a choral arrangement. Their arrangement of Circle Game is pretty and they have a nice vocal blend, certainly gives the song a different feel as opposed to the typical single voice. I wonder if they recorded it around a campfire? 5. Neca Falk - z vec plati (Both Sides Now): Possibly our first BSN from Yugoslavia/Slovenia, and one of the older ones in this collection dating back to 1980. Sung in a foreign tongue which is always interesting to me and bears witness to Joni's worldwide popularity. 6. Franco Morone & Raffaella Luna - A Case Of You: From their 2008 release, Italians Morone & Luna bring us a lilting and lovely version of this Blue standard. 7. Ken Elkinson - Blue: More pretty piano instrumental, and like Lisa Hilton Ken makes his home in Southern California. 8. Maria Pia De Vito - My Old Man: Maria & her Italian jazz partners put out a Joni Tribute CD a couple years ago titled "So Right". This track doesn't come from that but rather from a hard-to-find live release from 2007. Like the other tracks, they stretch this one into a lively 8+ minute jazz romp, very creative and original and lots of freestyle vocalese from Maria. Not your basic Joni Mitchell cover, that's for sure. 9. The Anthony Anderson Orchestra & Voices - A Case Of You: From a 2007 release - I don't know much about this one except to say that it doesn't sound very "orchestral" in the sense of that word, it's more intimate-sounding with mostly guitar and voice. It's quite lovely regardless. 10. Saxkartel - Goodbye Pork-Pie Hat: 11. Saxkartel - Both Sides Now: Saxkartel is a quartet of saxophonists from Belgium, so these tracks are nice and saxy. Lending a hand on the vocals is South African vocalist Tutu Puoane, who has also recorded her own Joni cover (ACOY). The interaction between the saxes and the vocals are different-sounding but certainly not unpleasant. 12. Robin Adler - Down To You 13. Robin Adler - Shadows And Light: Robin certainly needs no introduction to this crowd, and Dave Blackburn's playing and production/engineering skills are fully on display as well in these two challenging songs. Barnaby Finch masterfully manages keyboards and transcription for "Down To You". If you haven't heard Dave & Robin as yet, this will serve as a fine intro and whet your appetite for the upcoming SoCalFest. In a word - exquisite. 14. Nosfell - Roses Blue: If I'm not mistaken, Nosfell is a French musician/vocalist. This comes from his Live In Brussels DVD and is a little avant-garde which suits the song. Also is the first time there have been (2) Roses Blue's on a CD. A bouquet of Roses for you. 15. Kenny Werner - One For Joni: Call this one a bonus track if you will. When I first heard it I thought it was pretty much a cover of "Court & Spark" so I've included it here as the final track. Kenny is a well-known jazz pianist and has been on the scene since the early 60's. This track features some energetic soloing by Werner, lots of fine horn work and great performances all around. Only 15 tracks this time around, but not to worry, I'm not shortchanging you - there are several extended cuts this time around, and it's a full CD's worth. Anyway, it's about QUALITY and not QUANTITY anyway, right? Hope you enjoy these, would appreciate any feedback or comments. Well, they ARE from London - London, Ontario, that is. Thanks for the July edition, Muller. And Happy Canada Day to those that celebrate! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Jul 2009 08:33:57 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: Joni Covers, Volume #114 - Hotter than July Thanks for the additional detail on that, Catherine - I was actually going to assume they were from that OTHER London but thought I'd better put my Sherlock Holmes hat on and do my homework. I didn't catch the London, Ontario bit so I was surprised. They also do "Night Ride Home", that one's coming up next month I think. An odd choice for a choral selection, their director must be a tremendous Joni fan, and indeed since they're Canadian it makes sense. Happy Canada Day to you and all the other lovely JMDL Canadians too - y'all rock.
