I do have the Hits and Misses cd's, as well as Dreamland and one of the others after her semi-retirement (and the Starbucks released comp and Artists Choice), but what would make it for me is the unreleased Mingus sessions, maybe some live tracks. I still have on VHS the entire Farm Aide from 85 where Joni did a guitar version of Three Great Stimulants, and Dog Eat Dog...shame that may not make the set as those were appropriate songs. I promised a friend of mine I would record some tunes on my new autoharp and put them onto EZfolk later, so need to scoot. (Type in mrjop1975 for an artist search if you want.) Best James O. Some of you know my brother, Simon is in a band called The Freddy Jones Band (there is no Freddy... just like Jethro Tull). In the mid 90's they toured quite a bit and played with such notables as Dave Matthews Band, Natalie Merchant, Blues Traveler, Ben Folds, The Samples, Widespread Panic and Lenny Kravitz to name a handful. The Lenny Kravitz performance was one of my most memorable. They played on the main stage for the H.O.R.D.E. tour on many of the dates but when they played what used to be Pine Knob in Michigan (DTE Energy Center now but it will always be Pine Knob to me) I was lucky enough to take my then 9 yr. old son, James (now 20) with me and we had backstage passes for the day. Hanging with my favorite musicians is always a cool thing to do but on this day it was awesome because of the relaxed atmosphere; there were so many performers they were watching each other and the mood was very laid back. They actually had a hot-air balloon backstage and were giving rides to persons with backstage passes. Earlier in the day, a surprise tour bus showed up. Hootie and the Blowfish, who were scheduled to play the same venue the next night, had driven in record time from their previous venue in order to hook up with their friends (and to play a round of golf the next day before the show). James and I were hanging backstage; we were playing on a hill behind the stage, lying on our sides at the top and rolling down to the bottom. Darius Rucker came over to us while James was laughing with me at the bottom and said "Can I play too?" and proceeded to run up the hill with us he rolled down several times and then engaged James in conversation about how old he was, what he liked to do, books he was reading (Animorphs at that time). He spent about 40 minutes with us playing, laughing and talking. It's always difficult trying to balance one's star-struckedness (gosh is that even a word) with respect for privacy and some semblance of normalcy but I think I managed fairly well. One thing he said that always stuck with me was when I asked about the difficulties of being famous and he said "Just four dogs on parade", everyone laughed at that but it touched me deeply because of the way he said it, a little bit of sorrow behind the laughter. That night, I was sitting in the front of the house watching Natalie Merchant perform, she's always been one of my favorite artists and the way she moves when singing is mesmerizing. My brother came to get me he simply said "come with me," I grabbed James by the hand and did. I followed him, moving briskly down the stairs to the back of the stage into an area set up for bands and their guests where there was quite a spread of food and tubs of iced beer, soft drinks and wine. I remember thinking this is cool (based on the prices of refreshments in the venue... free was good. After we'd eaten Simon crooked his finger to me and I continued to follow him we went all the way to the wings of the stage and he whispered that Lenny Kravitz was coming on next and he knew that Lenny was my favorite. I stood in the wings of the stage as Lenny passed by, my heart was beating fast and I sort of stepped forward as if to follow him. There was a huge sound board blocking me and I stopped right at the board, as close as possible, actually a bit onstage. I stood there for a few minutes and felt people coming up on both sides of me to watch with me, I was lost in the music, singing along with the people on either side of me, oblivious. I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned to see a security person who asked to see my lanyard - obviously I wasn't authorized to be standing on stage. He motioned for me to leave with him and then I felt an arm go around one shoulder, the person on the other side put an arm around me the other way and a voice beside me said "She's with us!" It was Darius Rucker on one side of me and Mark Bryan, his drummer, on the other. My heart literally leapt in my chest. I guess this kind of came flooding back to me today when I got a link to a video clip of Freddy Jones Band performing on WGN news in Chicago the other day. http://www.wgntv.com/news/morningnews/wgntv-live-performance-freddy-jones-band-june23,0,1946839.story Chicago has a bid in to host the Olympics in 2016 and there was a big party at North Avenue Beach to raise awareness and convince the powers that be that Chicago can handle it, Freddy was the headliner for the show. Unfortunately Simon wasn't able to be at that performance but there are plenty of videos and songs on their Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/freddyjonesband?ref=profile and MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/freddyjonesband pages if you're at all interested in seeing him perform. I have also uploaded one of their songs to yousendit so you can hear if you're not a member of networking sites: https://download.yousendit.com/UmNKZGlwTlF6RThLSkE9PQ My brother is the drummer. Wow... this got really long. For those of you who made it this far, thank you. As to the Joni content: The venue my brother has played several times, DTE Energy Center, is where Joni played her 2000 Both Sides Now concert... her plane was late, she was in a foul mood and I have to say though the music was well-rehearsed and precise the ambiance just wasn't there at all. As a redemption for the day, I met some wonderful listers at the pre and post-concert mini-fest: Vince, Sire of Sorrows Patrick, Terri, Yael, Lamadoo (who rode with me) and a lot more wonderful people. This was where Gary Z. found out about us and joined the JMDL, a fabulous addition to our ranks. OK, OK, I'm done! I always wanted to set this in front of her & this is my chance. Jim L. downbeat magazine loved the "Mingus" album. The first sentence in the review (Aug 9, 1979) was >This is a wonderful piece of work.> On "Dry Cleaner From Des Moines", they said, >There should be no question that Joni Mitchell can perform as a credible, and here excellent, jazz singer. Her version of Annie Ross' "Twisted" some years back was presentiment: Joni is the closest thing we have in the '70s to the rangy, pristine tone and cool distance Ross embodied. Listen to the big band-backed "Dry Cleaner;" it's really Joni's "Farmers' Market," right down to the invitingly hip lyrics she's spun on a tiny, nonsensical topic. (The song follows a vignette of Mingus saying, "I'm not rich, but I always had a few coins in my pocket." It's about a small businessman from Iowa on a hot streak in Vegas, and in perfect Ross style, Joni sings, "He's got three oranges, three lemons, three plums-I'm losin' my taste for fruit.")> ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2009 #174 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe
