Is it a coincidence his greatest collection is called HIT? Sound familiar? Guitars on his songs, very Joniesque if you ask me. He has a couple of songs that are timeless... Mercy Street, Red Rain. In Your Eyes gets played out but it's still beautiful. Recently I couldn't stop listening to a song off the HIT collection called Love Town. I love his imagery in that song. I could go on and on. :-) I have not heard the new album, I'll have to check it out. I was a bit young when he was in Genesis although I am aware of the music. I got into Gabriel shortly before his duet with Joni. I just love how their voices are so intertwined on MSP. I love that they did a video for it too. Very playful. I wish they had done more together. I do think they have similar beliefs and philosophies on life. Joni didn't even reciprocate for Peter (unless I missed it - anyone?). I love Peter's latest album, Big Blue Ball. Joni would have fit into the theme of that album well. Other artists featured are Karl Wallinger, Marta Sebestyen, Natacha Atlas, Tim Finn, Joseph Arthur, Siniad O'Connor, Iaria O Lionaird and Papa Wemba. What a mix. And I even continued as a Genesis fan but then again I am quite the music slut. His "So" album was a godsend in the dark decade that was 80's music - a flawless record. And for my fellow trivia buffs, the video for "Sledgehammer" remains MTV's most-played video. Was not real crazy about his vocal on MSP, I thought the dry chalkiness of his voice didn't provide any contrast to Joni's voice which had pretty much the same qualities, plus I looked at most of CMIARS as an attempt to buddy up with the pop stars du jour to put herself back in the mainstream. In the case of Gabriel, however, they were recording in HIS studio so it made sense to ask him to contribute. CMIARS hasn't gotten any better with time for me, although there are some gems that have been pulled out and polished - the two major remakes of "Tea-Leaf Prophecy" show it to be a much stronger song than what was included on its original release, and "Beat of Black Wings" has always been stunning. As such, "Helpless" is an easy song to play, so even beginners should be able to handle it. You can do it with three chords. - --- On Thu, 5/28/09, Bob.Muller@Fluor.com wrote: From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Neil Young wins "Great Canadian Tune" To: joni@smoe.org Received: Thursday, May 28, 2009, 7:50 AM http://tinyurl.com/r5jza5 And Joni wasn't even nominated. :o( Bob NP: Belle & Sebastian, "Sukie In The Graveyard" - ------------------------------------------------------------ The information transmitted is intended only for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain proprietary, business-confidential and/or privileged material. "Helpless" is incredibly boring - just the same few notes (and sometimes words) being repeated over and over. I understand Neil Young wrote it when he was high, and maybe that explains it. Can you imagine several thousand people singing it in their Neil Young voice? Scary! Nevertheless, Matthew and I plan to show up at Yonge-Dundas Square on June 6 and play along, just for yuks. Here are the rules - you have to demonstrate that you're a "proficient" guitar player. Sheesh. http://www.luminato.com/2009/events/44 I do plan to do the bad Neil Young impression.
