["Marion Leffler" Subject: Re: House (SJC) Thanks, Gary for the heads up. I really liked that show when it first started but just couldn't commit to it. My sister is a huge fan though. Although she liked Joni's music in the early '70s, she resists it now because I'm so into her. Maybe House will re-inspire her. No doubt BSN will play in the episode somewhere. Always nice to hear from you. Mark in chilly Sydney ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 May 2009 05:26:12 -0700 (PDT) From: MattJones Subject: Joni's Voice.... Hi everyone, I am putting some finishing touches on a conference paper on Joni's voice and her socially/environmentally conscious music for the Feminist Theory and Music meeting in Greensboro, NC at the end of the month. Specifically, I am looking at (listening to??) the changes in Joni's voice epitomized most dramatically, perhaps, by the "Big Yellow Taxi"-era, "Dog Eat Dog," and later "Shine." Without asking any leading questions....I just wondered if any of you would like to share some brief thoughts on the changes in Joni's voice, either as you think it relates to her technique as a singer, her musico-emotional authenticity, the ways in which particular messages are conveyed, or simply whether or not you prefer one particular vocal era over another. Or anything else that strikes you about her voice.... If you don't mind sharing, please respond privately and indicate whether or not you would be comfortable with me using your words in this paper (confidentially or as a named informant). Thanks! Matt Jones P.S. I wanted to say a big public thank you to David Lahm for sending me a xerox of the "Dry Cleaner" sheet music. It completed my Joni-Rickie Lee Jones paper nicely! Thanks David!!! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 May 2009 17:15:35 -0400 From: David Eoll Subject: joni or patti, who can tell? So, when I first joined this list, whenever I read one of Patti's posts, I felt like I was listening to a Joni album. Now, when I listen to a Joni album, I feel like I'm chatting with Patti. Not at all unpleasant, mind you, just a little weird. Okay, that's all, really. Carry on. Cheers, David ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 May 2009 18:09:49 EDT From: FMYFL@aol.com Subject: Re: joni or patti, who can tell? That's because Patti shares the same DNA as Joni. Not only are Patti's posts filled with so many Joni lyrics, she uses them in such an appropriate way to get her "always loving" point across. She's such a wonderful asset to the JMDL. As part of this year's Luminato festival in Toronto, there will be a giant guitar jam at Yonge-Dundas square. Anyone with a guitar can show up and play together whichever song gets the most votes. Unfortunately, there is no Joni in the list, but I suppose they were looking for songs that are relatively easy to play. I'm not sure if Cohen's "Hallelujah" is necessarily that easy to play either.http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20090506.wcanadiantuneVoteNow0507/BNStory/Entertainment/home?cid=al_gam_mostview __________________________________________________________________ Looking for the perfect gift? I'm pretty sure I'll be able to go, I'll post again separately about that. :-) Kay - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Kay Ashley Date: Wed, May 13, 2009 at 1:56 AM Subject: May Residency at Banjo Jim's To: kay@kayashley.com Happy Spring, Everyone! I'm in the midst of a month-long residency there, every Friday night at 7:00 pm. Various members of the 14-piece band from the CD release party will be coming through this Friday the 15th and on the following Fridays, the 22nd and the 29th, so it promises to be fun. This Friday David Pilgrim, V. Jeffrey Smith, Martha Colby, Maritri Garrett, Allison Tartalia, and others TBD will be on tap...
