I suspect boys (as opposed to men) tend not to like Joni because she speaks for strong, independent girls who have enough inner confidence to desire rather than need. She also highlights and dissects male fragility more accurately than anyone I can think of.B It took me until Court and Spark to enjoy Joni (and that was primarily thanks to Tom Scott and Robben Ford). Shortly after its release, when I was 17, I started dating a girl who worshipped Blue and Ladies of the Canyon: the acoustic-based music grated, as did the voice, but Hissing... followed that Xmas and the combination of sublime musicianship, deeper and jazzier vocals and poetic lyrics grabbed me by the proverbials, never to loosen its grip. A few years later, during my bid to become a journalist, I wrote an article about the impact of Hissing... In short, it made me feel guilty to be a boy/man. I like to feel this helped me in my subsequent dealings with the less hairy sex. The article was never finished - I couldn't do the record justice.B As for JM's male equivalent, give me Paddy McAloon (Prefab Sprout). He doesn't do the politics but, like JM, he is wholly and almost religiously unafraid: to be unfashionable, to be sensitive, to be self-critical, to tackle the personal and sexual, to lay bare his feminine side. Check out the acoustic version of Appetite on the revamped recording of Steve McQueen (aka Two Whee ls Good in the US), wherein our Paddy reconfigures himself as a woman talking to her unborn son. Recently listened to an interview with Rickie Lee Jones (hard work - really bad sound quality!) http://bit.ly/rQCqt Theres only one or two token chairs for women. And once one of them gets in it, nobody else can have it...Joni Mitchell has had the chair for a long time. And nobody else is allowed to have the credibility that Joni Mitchell has. Its as if Joni Mitchell created all music. And this is not her fault. This is because of sexism and they just dont have the time, the patience or interest to discuss other women as important, viable, iconic figures. Apparently RLJ's thinking about doing a record about horses and trucks. She says, "Thought it would be nice to have a record for people who like horses.. and then I thought there probably aren't too many people who like horses who buy my records so I should put some trucks in there" very best PaulC NP The Horses - Rickie Lee Jones http://www.last.fm/music/Rickie+Lee+Jones/_/The+Horses ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Apr 2009 21:09:38 +1000 From: Mark-Leon Thorne Subject: Reciprocity Hello to the Joni community. I was just listening to the beautiful Seal song, "If I Could". Made all the more beautiful by the inclusion of Joni's vocals. Her voice sits with Seals so well and with the feeling of the song. I remember reading Interview magazine when it first came out. It was a transcript of a phone conversation between Joni and Seal where he asked Joni if she would like to sing on his album. I read also that Seal had been a fan of Joni's for many years and had dreamed of one day singing with her. As we all know, Seal reciprocated by singing on "How Do You Stop?". It got me wondering how many of Joni's guest singers has she reciprocated on their albums with. The most obvious is James Taylor. James sang on "Man To Man" but Joni had sung on "You've Got a Friend" and "Long Ago and Far Away" many years before. I think was him returning the favour for Joni singing on "Only One". Joni also sang on "Love Has Brought Me Around". Joni recorded "Liberty Lies" with David Baerwald on his album, "Bedtime Stories" after he recorded "Nothing Can Be Done" for "Night Ride Home". Two of my favourite duets on Joni's albums are "My Secret Place" with Peter Gabriel and "Good Friends" with Michael McDonald. Now, I know Joni has been part of the chorus with Michael McDonald on other people's songs but, has she ever sung on one of his albums? Has Joni ever recorded anything with Peter Gabriel for one of his albums? Are there any other reciprocal arrangements on any studio recordings? I was shocked to learn that Simon & Garfunkel are getting back together and touring Australia in June. Not sure if any other dates have been announced yet. I hope all those in the Northern Hemisphere are enjoying Spring as we freeze our butts off here. We have received the earliest snowfalls in 12 years. Icy winds are blowing up the east coast and snow is falling down to 700 metres in some areas. I'm loving this Antarctic blast we're getting. Maybe we'll get the nickname of "the Great White South", eh Canada? Anyway, I'd love to know if anyone can come up with any more reciprocal recordings Joni has done with others. Yes - she sings on David Crosby's "Laughing", he sings on "Free Man In Paris" & "Down To You". Brian Blade plays on TTT, she sings "Steadfast" on his album "Perceptual" - - a gorgeous track which I'm sure you've heard. She contributes to Don Henley's track "Who Owns This Place?" and Don of course chimes in on "Snakes & Ladders" (and was the original vocal on "You Dream Flat Tires" but was scrapped for Lionel Ritchie.) She sings on Graham Nash's "Another Sleep Song" and he contributes guitar to "Cold Blue Steel" and also sings in the Upstairs Saskatoon Choir or whatever it's called - at least I think that's the case, I welcome clarifications/corrections. I thought it a very relaxed and easy interview. I have always liked rickie Lee Jones and enjoy her music. Certainly she should be given a chair at that table ! I don't even think Joni thinks she herself has been given a chair at it. How strange when the interviewer said all we ever see is Joni Mitchell Joni Mitchell, I dont no matter where I look except on the rare occasion her name appears like some miracle. Just goes to show what a desert women in the music industry feel they are in.I for one wish something could be done about it but by all that she said and from what Joni has to say about it the music industry still is a mans world and by all the gods and godesses i wish it was not.I wasnt too enamoured though of Rickie citing in one breath Joni as her only example of successful women and then in the next describing successful women as women who look and dress like men , women who are skinny and lacking in the curves department.I wonder if she was referring to the DJRD cover?I remember at one point thinking she herself had been ever so slightly influenced by the Hejira cover? I wonder what women we jmdlers would seriously consider giving chairs to at a table so obviously overcrowded by men? What a thoughtful topic for the JMDL. For me, a large, beautiful, oval table would have Joni at one end of the head and Rickie Lee at the other head end. Just for starters (because I have several women in mind still) I will only add two more female songbirds of love for now, then I will add more with time. I will add Laura Nyro and Joan Armatrading at the middle of the sides of the table where the table bulges out the most. So we have Joni, Rickie Lee, Joan A. and Laura Nyro on my imaginary table for now. I have several other nominees that I don't forget because I have their work written in my heart. Souther and Glen Frey sang back up on "Off Night Back Street" from Don Juan's Reckless Daughter and a quote from an interview with J.D. Souther: ** "Don and I did a song for The Color of Money, cause it was a cool movie with Paul Newman in it about, you know we liked it. And it was a good song, I like that song, we had a great time with that song. Fun to cut, you know, we had, you know Joni Mitchell and Rosie Vela sing those great female very suggestive very great background female parts, and Don sang it good, and it was fun snappy lyrics in it, great Kooch track." I'm guessing that was "Who Owns This Place;" I'll have to pay a bit more attention next time I see the movie. I was also surprised to see on Glenn Frey's website that: # "Glenn had an affair with Joni Mitchell around 1973/1974 and the songs "Help Me" and "Car on a Hill" are about him." This is a direct quote from the "fun facts" section of his website. I'm not surprised they had an affair, only that I didn't know those songs were about him. Perhaps it's been in an interview somewhere before but I just don't remember hearing that before. Car on a Hill is one of my favorites from Court & Spark, I just love that little drum hiccup at the beginning. Even if she went all in with him (metaphorically consuming a large quantity of him, like a case), she'd feel the intoxicating effects but would still know she must be prepared to bleed.
