Here it is: Hi Michael, I've written a bit about it in my handwritten journal, but haven't gotten around to typing it out for the list yet. I liked it all right, but more because I was familiar with the music than anything to do with the dance. I think we sat too close. We were in the second row, and could see every muscle flinch, and the sweat and the hard work-- rather than the magic that is created when you don't see that part. But I was so distracted by the constantly changing projection on the wall behind the dancers that I was focused more on it more than them. I'd like to see the ballet again, from a few rows further back, where I'd see the dancers as more of a whole and, having already seen the projected photos, maybe wouldn't be watching the wall so closely in fear of missing something. To be honest, I found the dancing itself less than fascinating. Much as I wanted to love it, I didn't, and if I hadn't been someone who loved the music already, I probably would have been bored. As impressive as those athletic and trained bodies are, the choreography seemed to me like just a bunch of leaps and pirouettes and flinches in endless variations. I think it is simply that it is not the kind of dance that interests me to watch. I was, however, very affected when they carried the little girl onto the stage. The ballet is about what is happening on the planetthe pollution, the war, the destruction of agricultural land, poor human relations and to see that child alone in the midst of the dancers simplified it all for me: not only what we are doing to the planet and each other, but to our children and their children who are not responsible for any of it but will be left holding the bag; who will suffer the consequences. I felt like weeping whenever that little girl was onstage. Joni was in the audience quite a few rows behind us and stood up and took a bow when introduced before the show. The audience stood and applauded her we obviously love our Joni. She joined the dancers and choreographer (he is a gorgeous man) onstage for their curtain call/ bows and seemed both happy and humble. There, done! I will post this to the list as well. Thanks for the prompt, Michael, or who knows if I'd ever have gotten around to it. As pointed out in the interview, listeners/students of Joni's music may very well gain a whole new appreciation . I know it works for me, when my head is turned in the direction of (new) ideas expressed on a subject matter that is in my blood ;-) I look forward, even more now, to reading Michelle's book. Really great research, reporting and prose style! I know it's going to be one of those reads that will greatly disappoint me when it's over! I'm looking forward to that read, especially the focus on my favorite Joni period. I tried to listen this morning but it conked out on my computer before getting to that part and I couldn't reconnect. There are podcasts, but I have no idea how you're supposed to listen to that or if it's the same show that's on radio. As well, Jian Ghomeshi has Q-TV on Bold (can't remember which night) but I'm not sure if it's always the same stuff that's on his radio show. The infamous Billy Bob Thornton interview was on the TV version (which is basically just video of them doing the radio interview.) There's loads of stuff on the CBC website, but darned if I can find this particular item. It may not be there yet. Q was still running on Pacific time but I couldn't connect for some reason. __________________________________________________________________ Yahoo!
