I think it is wonderful she has received so much positive attention. On the other hand our beloved Joni, whom I have been a massive fan of since I first heard her sing her original arrangement of Woodstock on a 'Best of the 70's' 8 track tape in 1972, still in my mind has one of the best and most beautiful singing voices of our time, Her range and tone are singular and perfect. Of course I would not bother to compare apples to oranges they are both delightful. Miles of Aisles is an excellent example of her huge talent. Joni is is a select group of artists who are able to express their talents in a multitude of mediums, as we all know. I gave 'The Fiddle and the Drum' video to my sister for a birthday gift, I can't wait to see it. My sis a great Joni fan also. Another fantastic female vocalist, what about K.D.Lang? She is amazing. Have a fantastic weekend everyone, finally hitting the 70 degree mark here in Michigan. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone... Well. We often talk about her voice changing. But, is there any quote from Joni herself about her changing voice? I mean, is she unhappy or is she just OK with that and realized that it's an effect of her chain-smoking and polio (that also caused muscular de------ i can;t remember the word!) I thought I had bored everyone to tears with my plugging it but perhaps some folks skim their JMDL sometimes. Once again...JONIFEST will be in Southern California in the mountain town of Idyllwild Sept 24-27. We are making 30 people the cut off number and we have 22 paid reservations so far with 5 or 6 more hopefuls yet to commit so there is still a little space. As Cassy helpfully wrote, the Yahoo page created for this event can be found here: http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/SoCalJoniFest09/. On that page you can pay deposits, see the venue, and see who is coming (if you can figure out their names from their email handles!) Dave of the Southwest. p.s I just got an extraordinary phone call yesterday. A man from ASCAP called me to invite me to Washington D.C, all expenses paid, to a gala event at the Library of Congress, in which songwriters and their craft are celebrated for the purpose of impressing upon Congressional leaders the value of the profession and how songwriter's rights must be honored in copyright laws, which are always under threat from the business lobbies. Apparently they need actual flesh and blood constituents from the districts of certain congressmen to be there to maybe meet with them or at least wear a name tag showing they are from their district. I assumed it was a crank call, but no, I have the plane ticket in my hand. Never been to D.C before! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Apr 2009 07:23:14 -0700 From: "gene" Subject: karla bonoff, susan boyle, joni, sara mcquaid. sjc hi kate, You're not disagreeing with me---there's a reason why i have most of her cd's/albums. Is she on the same level as joni's? Of course not--- her music isn't even close---but her writings about relationships and events in her life are pretty darn good. i can definitely relate. Saw her a year or so ago touring with Nina Gerber and Kenny Edwards. It was sweeeet. Susan Boyle. Now that was a surprise, probably because, like alot of other folks, my expectations were pretty low. Boy, did she bring tears to my eyes. It just show everyone how much singing talent is out there, away from the commercial radio/music business. I catch a house concert every month and most of the people I see I never heard of before and there hasn't been one that has disappointed me. There are some very good talented singer/songwriters out there. And I encourage all of you joni listers to go and support house concerts. Its a great venue---close and intimate. You will not be disappointed and at the same time support indie music. Joni's voice is not spectacular. The biggest complaint that I here from people I try to turn on to Joni's music is her "high pitch shrieky" vocie. Her timbre is sometimes annoying to people. But her voice, like her music, is the colors to paint her words. The only other songwriter on par with Joni is Dylan and we all know about his voice. Sara NcQuaid. Someone just turn me on to her and she can sing and write. Maybe some British listers can add more info about her. Give her a try. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfOQpnBx1M0 And tie everything together---in the past few years I have discovered so much music by listening to public community radio. If you have one near you, please support them and if you don't check out KVMR Community Radio via the web. Great surprise. http://www.kvmr.org/webcast.html Sorry for the long post, but you know I love my music. take care, gene ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2009 #107 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe
