She said that hearing The Police, especially, affected her sound, saying, "their rhythmic hybrids, and the positioning of the drums, and the sound of the drums, was one of the main calls out to me to make a more rhythmic album". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_Things_Run_Fast RR ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Apr 2009 11:51:47 -0500 From: mia _ Subject: re: WTRF <> I love WTRF! It's funny that the three songs that NPR mentions - Ladies Man, Moon at the Window, and You Dream Flat Tires - are my top three songs from that album! And Larry rocks on that bass! (Has anyone ever seen the video with Joni playing Moon at the Window on her acoustic? It's outta this world!)I also love Be Cool, Man to Man, and Love.I'm not too much of a fan of Underneath the Streetlight, and I hate to say this, but the melody in Chinese Cafe bores and depresses me - kinda makes me feel like I'm falling off the edge of the Earth [ducking now].This is a great energetic CD to spin when you're dancing around the house doing chores.Mia _________________________________________________________________ Rediscover Hotmail.: Get e-mail storage that grows with you. http://windowslive.com/RediscoverHotmail?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_HM_Rediscover_Stor age1_042009 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 04 Apr 2009 13:00:53 -0400 From: brianasymes@aol.com Subject: What the heck Happened to my Post How come all tha Capital B's showed up in my last post Brian ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Apr 2009 12:06:12 -0500 From: mia _ Subject: re: WTRF - Moon at the Window I was unsuccessful in finding the acoustic version of Moon at the Window (from the Much Music Show in Toronto), but here is a similar video with just the sound of Joni playing and singing. This volume had some tasty tracks on it and a few not so tasty that I had comments for. <<< 1. Jordan Trotter - Car On A Hill: We get #111 off to a solid start with an updated modern country-pop treatment of a Joni tune that's only been attempted once or twice. A nice arrangement, solid singing and great performances by everyone involved. >>> One of my favorite songs by Joni, I really like this treatment. Not jazzy like the original but I love the guitar licks and her voice is pretty good. <<< 3. Leigh Carriage - Crazy Cries Of Love: Always refreshing to see that some artists realize that Joni was relevant in the 90's. Leigh Carriage, one of Australia's finest jazz singers, certainly knows it and gives TCCOL a nice jazz spin, accompanied by some nice keyboard work. >>> I really like this cover. Leigh seems to have completely captured the flavor of the song, I like the piano and bass a lot. <<< 6. Maureen McGovern - The Fiddle And The Drum: This was a fairly high-profile pair of Joni covers from last year (she also sang the first line from "All I Want" as an intro to Simon & Garfunkel's "America); Maureen is best-known for her hit single "The Morning After" and she's had a long career spanning about 35 years. Her voice has a nice warm quality to it, it's almost TOO perfect and sterile for my tastes - still, these are very well done. Both are from her 2008 release "The Long And Winding Road". >>> While she does do this song justice, I'm totally spoiled by A Perfect Circle's version - nicely done, though. <<< 7. Delerium Blues Project - Be Cool: The Delerium Blues Project is the brainchild of musician and longtime Joni fan Kenny Werner and vocalist Roseanna Vitro. They bring a nice mellow jazz Steely Dannish groove to Be Cool from their 2008 release, and the track features a stinging horn section too. >>> Excellent! Her voice reminds me a bit of Lynn Skinner's with her smooth jazzy vocal slides. <<< 8. Liz Bligan - Big Yellow Taxi: A lot of country flavor to this one - pedal steel and such, and even a guitar solo thrown in for good measure. >>> Not to my taste at all and when it's not my taste of a song that's done to death I wonder "why bother?" <<< 9. Melody Diachun - Free Man In Paris: LOVE this one - I put it on the "Sweet 16" disc I gave away at Lucyfest. Born in Montreal and now making her home in Vancouver Canada, Melody is another fine Canadian jazz performer to take on Joni. And this one is a nice stretch, running just under 7 minutes and featuring some nice soloing from her band. >>> I love the horns! Not the easiest of songs to sing Melody does a fine job and puts her own stamp on it. <<< 10. Sharon Veer - Both Sides Now: Joni's friend Sharon Bell (of "Song For Sharon" fame) recorded this album 30 years ago and paid homage to her childhood friend by including BSN. >>> She has a pretty voice but this one's a little bit too dry for my taste; I prefer a bit more personality. I can appreciate her version even though it's not my favorite cover of BSN. <<< 11. Nina Vidal - River: Nina's middle name is Simone, and that's significant as you can tell by listening. Nina Simone was a big influence as were many other jazz and soul artists. Her 2007 take on "River" is lovely and well-paced and showcases her voice as well as her piano talents. >>> I find her voice a bit too thin but appreciate her piano work. <<< 12. Kristofer Benn - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: German jazz singer turns in a fine scatting jumping take on this one from 2005, some nice electric piano soloing as well. >>> I'll have to check out more by this guy, I really liked his take on TDCFCM. <<< 13. The Favourites - You Turn Me On I'm A Radio: From 2008, a soft, gentle flowing version of Joni's intentionally pop song. The singer navigates the trickier parts of the melody with ease and even adds some of her own embellishments. >>> I like the little rough edges to her vocals and the band does a great job, especially the drummer. <<< 14. Suzanne Fiore - Jericho: Another Bostonian; Suzanne Fiore boldly picked the seldom-done Jericho in a live setting and released it on her live album last year. She gives it a fine reading, using her cabaret skills to highlight the dramatic nature of the song. >>> When I first heard this song on Miles of Aisles, I was entranced; I listened to it over and over and over again. I found some of Suzannes notes a bit flat. Whether that were her style/intent I don't know but it fell a bit short for me. I will give her kudos for covering this song. <<< 16. Sunday Folk - Big Yellow Taxi: One of the older tracks on the disc, this one goes back almost 30 years to 1981. This is pretty cheesy stuff, sounds like an Up With People/Partridge Family sort of thing. Sounds like a school choir who got the idea they should release a record, who let them? <<< 17. Karan Casey - The Fiddle And The Drum: This one is different - in lieu of doing this one acapella, as is commonly the case, Karan does TFATD as a voice/bagpipe duet, which is awfully effective as it connotes a military sound. Karan is an Irish traditional folksinger - she certainly sounds authentic here. >>> I agree with you completely on this one. Love the drone accompaniament to her vocal. I have a couple of relatives who play bagpipes and actually do like the sound. <<< And with that we come to the end of another in the never-ending series of Joni Covers - hope you find plenty to like here. >>> Some real notables in this volume, thanks for bringing it to us. I love the ability to download over the internet, I'm sure it saves you a ton of time, and it's allowing me to catch up and fill in some gaps with your retro covers each month, thanks so much for those too. Mia, you're not alone. I'm not a fan of "Chinese Cafe" either. It feels like it goes on too long. I've always felt that I'm the only one who just doesn't dig this song.
