Tea Leaf Prophecy ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Apr 2009 11:36:41 +0100 From: gerard mclaughlin Subject: Re: can we invite joni to talk with us? "To plead with her on our behalf."? Anon anon it seems you have somehow got Joni confused with Jesus Christ . The language you use is directly taken from the Catholic doctrine of Mary as Mediatrix of all graces. Sharon here is given the role of Mary who "pleads with Him on our behalf." Its very odd language to use when talking about an artist/eathling.Perhaps pedestals are not the best place to put our "idols" on, anon. Dangerous territory. While it is healthy to recognise Joni for her worth as a human being and an artist it is the opposite to worship her and is ultimately dehumanizing both to her and you . Truth is truth. Let the truth set you free. Joni is just a human being trying to do her best. She would be the last person to want to be mythologised. We have proof of that by her not accepting a ballet based on her life but rather she wanted to divert us from herself and focus on more important issues.I think in her confessional period we needed that amount of honesty and self scrutiny . It helped lots of us to look deeper than was generally done before she came on the world stage. Joni's work from that period revealed her personal journey. Now that she is a grown woman she no longer has the need to get so personal and speaks to us of other things. She knows that she has a voice and uses it with conviction. Do we really need her to "chat" ? If you look more closely at your thought processes here, anon I think you might agree that by desiring her to chat you are admitting that you have a need to demythologise Joni. She has her own friends and family with whom she chats. We are her fans. We buy her albums. We come on the jmdl to chat about her influence on our lives. I dont think we ought to expect her friends to intercede to her on our behalf to get her to chat with us now or anon anon at all at all.I hope you get my drift. Wouldnt do you any harm to use your marbles on things other than pedestals. They are entirely of our own making and a complete and utter waste of time and energy and when they fall we realise there was nothing on them other than a rather nasty aspect of ourselves. Even with that though, this album is chock full of GREAT songs. It's not perfect, to be sure, and I'll never say it's my fave Joni album & I don't know who would. Still, "Chinese Cafe" is as good as anything else she's done in terms of melodic & emotional lyrical impact and "Be Cool" & "Moon At The Window" are fast becoming standards in their own right. If you haven't listened to this shadow classic in a while, give it a spin today. When i first heard the album i thought it was interesting as there were some fun bits on there, but much of what i love about Joni was missing. I may be one of a few (and you did try to open my eyes to it back at the French fest if i remember correctly Bob) but i find it dull, unoriginal, and it doesn't really have the Joni feel, whatever that may be. There are some terribly cringe worthy moments on that album. Nice article though, thanks for the link. Garret (finally got the wireless thing working in the new place. My girlfriend and family at the time were 250 miles away. Having a new album was like having a good friend - I listened to it almost every day. To hear that thumping bass riff in "Flat Tires", to hear Joni & JT duetting on "Man To Man", and as Victor said, the beautiful closer "Love" made it a great trip for me everytime and it helped me during that time in my life. An interesting sidebar: Only TWO of the songs on the album have yet to be covered by another artist - "Be Cool" has been done 15 times, putting it right up there with "Little Green" & "Edith & The Kingpin" (and only 601 away from BSN!). Her other 80's albums have yet to generate that level of interest in terms of covers. WTRF: 37 covers CMIARS: 9 covers DED: 2 covers Make of that what you will.
