The track was a cover of the song, Baby It's You. I picked up the CD to see the track listing and lo and behold, there was Both Sides, Now. I asked the sales girl if I could hear the song to see if it's the one I think it is but they no longer have listening facilities so, I checked Amazon and iTunes and, sure enough. It is Joni's 2000 version with lush orchestration. Did you pick this one up, Bob? The album is Songs of Love and Loss 2 and is all covers. This is obviously the second part and the first one is also covers. A very interesting collection of covers too. Tina covers Alice Cooper, Burt Bacharach, Tim Finn, Elton John, Sting, Kate Bush, REM and Joni. One of my personal favorites is Stephen Still's "Black Queen" *the 'courtesy of Jose Cuervo' version. Another of my favorites is Little Feat's "High Rollers", I absolutely love the guitar licks in that song. I also think the Talking Heads "Girlfriend is Better" song is about gambling addiction. According to the album notes, it's just James Taylor on guitar (and I presume Joni Mitchell on dulcimer). But it really sounds like in certain spots that there's another instrument in there, either a bass or some percussion. Am I hearing things? Thanks! - -Corey ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Mar 2009 09:48:22 +1100 From: Mark-Leon Thorne Subject: Re: Tina Does Joni For those not familiar with Tina Arena, she is very well known in Australia. She was an Italian kid from Melbourne who was a regular in the 1970s on a kids' talent show called, Young Talent Time. She was not heard from for several years and emerged in the late '80s all grown up. She released one the highest selling albums of all time called, Don't Ask which had one of the biggest selling sigle of all time - Chains. A torch song which highlighted her incredibly strong voice. The second single was a beautiful song called, Sorrento Moon. Not sure if it's about Sorrento in Italy or the seaside resort town on the Victoria coast. She went on to develop a huge following in France of all places and released several albums sung in French. In 2000, Tina was asked to write and perform a song at the Sydney Olympics - The Flame. In 2008 she appeared on Australian Idol as a mentor and was a guest judge, along with Darren Hayes for the London arm of the show's first round. She is considered a veteran of show biz, being a show biz kid and is the most successful of the kids that started out on Young Talent Time. B When a single note is plucked, you hear both the actual pitch as well as several other tones at the same time, though they are not as strong as the main pitch. B Which leaves you often hearing sounds you can't exactly place...because they are a little fainter than the actual note being played. B Both the dulcimer and guitar were miked really well so they are very clear in this recording. Also, at the very end, there's a little percussion, tapping sound that's probably being done on the guitar. She does a wonderful rendition of Foreigner's "I Want To Know What Love Is" and the album "Don't Ask" also has a song I love called "The Greatest Gift" which my husband and I consider our song. She really does have some chops. You're probably right. That would make sense especially when considering Joni's rather percussive style with the dulcimer. That's probably her at the end. Do you think James is the only one playing guitar, or do you think Joni is playing both dulcimer and guitar on that track? To my ear it sounds like it's probably just James on guitar. - -Corey On Mar 30, 2009, at 4:40 PM, waytoblue@comcast.net wrote: > I think what you may be hearing is some of the overtones from the > dulcimer and > guitar.
