I just realized that Joni seldom makes happy songs. Of all songs shebs made, there are only very very few. B From STAS : Night In The City, only. (1/10) B From Clouds : Chelsea Morning, only (1/10) b i think Chelsea Morning is the other Night In The City, the difference is only in time : night vs morning B From LOTC : None. BYT and Conversation sounds happy but theybre not about happiness (bbig yellow taxi took away my old manb) B From Blue : Carey and California are definitely not happy-themed songs though they sound happy B From For The Roses : None. I remember a quote that sound like this bFTR is an album that you play all alone in your room when you just lost your virginity and the phone doesnbt ringb. You Turn Me On Ibm A Radio sounds happy, but itbs not. B From Court and Spark : Free Man In Paris (and Twisted, but since Twisted is a cover, it doesnbt count) (1/11) B From THOSL : In French They Kiss On Main Street (1/10) B From Hejira : None. Coyote sounds happy, but Joni wrote : A prisoner of the white lines on the freeway (0/10) From DJRD : probably none (I donbt know what Dreamland is all about, and Talk To Me is not about happiness) (0/10) B From Mingus : The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines (1/6). But this song is a collaboration with Mingus. Had Mingus not created a happy tune, there wonbt be a happy lyric. So, itbs 0.5/6. All raps are not counted. B From WTRF : Underneath The Streetlight (1/10). Youbre So Square is happy, but itbs not Jonibs B From Dog Eat Dog : Only Good Friends and Lucky Girl B From CMIARS : I canbt classify My Secret Place / Number One. But Dancinb Bob is surely a happy song (1/10) B From NRH : NRH, The Only Joy In Town, Raybs Dadbs Cadillac. (3/10) B From Turbulent Indigo. This is a sad album. B From TTT : Only 2 : Harlem In Havana and The Crazy Cries of Love. Love Puts On A New Face is not happy though the title suggests happiness. B From BSN : 0 B From Shine : 0 B B B B RianB ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Feb 2009 04:43:44 -0800 (PST) From: Michael Flaherty Subject: Re: Joni Very Seldom Writes Happy Songs >>>Well. I just realized that Joni seldom makes happy songs. Of all songs shebs made, there are only very very few. I'm not going to be able to come up with the exact quote or where it came from, but Joni said something to the effect that she's more likely to write when she's sad, which makes a great deal of sense to me. In fact, I use this paraphrase to help answer the question "why are all of these stories (or whatever) so sad?" Yes, SuperSaver shipping can be a trial (sigh). I elected to screen it for the first time yesterday with my 17 year old ballet dancing daughter Amelia (yes yes yes...). After 12 years of classes, I was seeking a more objective opinion. She spent most of the time asking rhetorical questions like, "do you know how difficult this choreography is? I shrugged. "Way." Her favorite? "The Three Great Stimulants." Mine? "If" Well, for now anyway.Amelia was agog at the speed with which the classical dance language was used and admired (as did I) the editorial choices in their support of the pace and concept of the piece. The liner notes of the DVD tell an anecdote of the discussion of using front or rear projection over the dancers themselves and its subsequent rejection due to shadows and space limitations. Joni salvaged some of her vision through the occasional use of dissolves and double exposures of the projected material that was used. The DVD includes the entire show length portion of just the "cyclops" video (the circular projection that appears above the stage throughout). Watching that is a treat in itself, particularly during "For The Roses." As a dancer though, Amelia said she would have appreciated the inclusion of a version of the show shot from the widest perspective so that she could inspect the off screen portions of the edited piece. We agreed that the geometric stage compositions of dancers' group movements, transition entrances and exits were often sacrificed to focus the viewer's attention on a particular piece of expression. Such are the pitfalls of video record of any stage performance. An audience member may focus his or her attention at will, but the at home viewer must allow the camera and editor license. We shared hope that a tour will be forthcoming so as to satisfy our curiosity. I was so happy to share this unique bonding experience with my daughter. It was suddenly clear that she was one of many "Joni's Children." The Gift keeps giving.
