I guess the same is true of many people on JMDL. What about yourself? Joni and what else? Is that Deathcab for Cutie your daughter is listening to? I don't really know how to define emo, but deathcab for cutie are certainly not emo in my opinion, at least, they don't seem to come with the trappings of the image, more indie rock i'd say (maybe this is a silly distinction, i don't know) and they rock. They are excellent creators of sound. Skilled in the lyrics department too. Prolific and varied when you consider side projects, such as the Postal Service. Maybe it's not the same band. Deathcab for Cutie are a band i'd recommend to others very easily. I saw Regina Spektor a few years back, not long before she released Begin to Hope. It was a great gig. the venue suited her style, she engaged with the audience, and her voice, my my, her live singing was so much more interesting than her recorded music (which i like). They like mostly the same stuff. I like "Deathcab for Cutie," and my son sort of does, but my daughter can't stand them. Neither of them is into Joni. Not having spent much time thinking about this, I'll just say Dick Cavett off the top of my head. Anyone? **** Well, because it is Saturday morning (TIC! Morgantown, buy your dreams a dollar down...), I have time on my hands, no childs to raise, and no one calling me up for favors, no one's future to decide, so I'll chime in. At first I thought seriously, then I got silly. Sunny day, looking for laughter and finding it there: How about JONI interviewing Rush Limbaugh or Bill O'Reilly? (Two of the WORST PERSONS IN THE W O R L D! LOL...) Man, she'd aim the hoses on 'em and slap 'em upside a da head a few times. (And you know two heads are better than one.) It would be a hoot. Bon weekend! Oh, yeah, and out-of-the-fire-like-Catholic St. Valentin's Day, too. (Help me! I'm posting and I can't shut up!) You like roses and kisses and pretty men? Or a pretty girl in your bathroom? Whatever you wish, my dears. (Hey! Now where in the world is Emiliano? Sometimes this list seems like only a river of changing faces, looking for an ocean. Shadows and light. Good on Obama for being the first to call! Makes my heart sing. I'll continue to send up my prayers. There's another tragedy we can't just drive by. The plane crash in Buffalo. Can we shuffle off to Buffalo? I was really hoping that today's digest would hold a message from Jerry, assuring us that none of his friends or kin were harmed. (I seem to recall, with all the Tim Russert talk in June, that Jerry went to school w/ him in or around Buffalo.) Jerry, I hope you didn't know any of these people. One of the women killed in the crash was an 9/11 truth activist. Her husband was killed in the World Trade Center. She has just met Obama. She was from Stamford, CT. My old hometown. I've no problem with somebody not finding 'Shine''s lyrics to be the most profound, but to imply that Yeats's and Kipling's politics invalidate appreciation of some of their poems is sheer stupidity. The dismissal of the 'Frankenstein technologies' lyric is shallow, too: I'm not sure those technologies are being condemned, the message seems to be that we'll need a hell of a lot of wisdom to steer our way through them.
