I never had the privilege of knowing Bob Murphy but I get a good sense of him from the outpouring of love here. He is someone I would have enjoyed the company of so, it is a loss to me too. I get sad when good people are lost, whether I know them or not. I cried when Princess Diana died. Don't ask me why. I never knew her but I sensed the goodness in her. I feel the same way about Bob Murphy. He was one of us. I felt a kinship. He was from my tribe too. A brother to many. Ever since I knew he was sick, I have tried to follow his progress. I never had a chance to let him know that I cared from afar. Thank you to those who kept him company and cared for him. My lesson in this is to share the love before it's too late. The world is indeed a sadder place. But, man, can you imagine the party that's just started in heaven? I'm sure he's already got them rolling in the aisles. I think it was Catherine who said that nobody made her laugh like Smurf. And she's right. I remember going to see him in the hospital just after he was diagnosed. After a few minutes, we were laughing so hard, the nurses closed the curtains (which din't help at all, of course.) Then they shooed us to the guest lounge. When two of his friends from work arrived, the staff relegated us to the end of some hall, we were so raucus. As Jody so kindly relayed to Bob on Thursday night (for which I'll be forever grateful), Bob did everything right. He fought the disease harder than anyone I've ever seen. And in the end, I'd have to say that he didn't entirely lose. It was more of a draw. I left this one intact so you can see what I mean. Sometimes I abbreviate that to something shorter and leave the quotes in. It's a bit unwieldy to leave it entire so I just cut it short and leave the quotes I'm not sure why I do this but... I also include the part of the email I'm replying to inside brackets <<< like this >>> it helps me to keep track of exchanges that go on into perpetuity... idiosyncrasies, we all have them. I am also disappointed that Joni didn't play a real oboe or at the very least denote it correctly on the liner notes. (I should know better than to challenge the "covers king"'s internal data base.) I'm tempted to modify them but that's not my call as I'm reproducing faithfully as printed (I thought it hilarious that the typist for "Taming The Tiger" used "peddle" steel guitar rather than "pedal" steel guitar and did it multiple times.
