If it hasn't, read below. If it has, well, ignore me - I don't think I can make Friday night, but I'll be there at some point: Joni Mitchell: GREEN FLAG SONG February 6March 29, 2009 Opening Reception: Friday, February 6 at 8pm The Mendel Art Gallery is pleased to present a new body of photographic work by iconic singer/songwriter and visual artist Joni Mitchell. As moving as her musical works, Green Flag Song depicts a deeply personal response to the consequences of war and humanitys struggle with itself. The exhibition consists of a series of large green-toned triptychs created from digitally modified combinations of photographic images, printed on canvas. The impetus for this work began when Mitchells malfunctioning television began emitting images that resembled green-tinted photographic negatives. Mitchell began to take photographs of the dying screen, and when enlarged and printed on canvas, the result is a collection of intense, dark, semiabstract images. Through photographic expression and rich, saturated colours, Mitchell invites audiences to participate in a collective awareness of a need for change. Primarily recognized as a singer and songwriter, Joni Mitchell brings to these vivid and arresting images the same profound social, political, and spiritual conviction that informs her music. The Mendel is the only scheduled venue in Western Canada for Green Flag Song. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Feb 2009 22:02:22 +0000 From: Patti Parlette Subject: New Joni Cover Hi Loves: I saw this in the paper last night and was going to run all excited to my computer: "New Joni cover! New Joni cover!", and then thought: "Nah, I'm sure Muller's already on it. Or Jerry, or Joseph." LOL...now I see I was right! Anyway, fwiw, here's what my paper said: ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAYAt LastTelarc JazzWith her immaculate three-octave range, flawless pitch, crystalline tones, stainless technical finesse and impeccable versatility, vocalist Ann Hampton Callaway might seem altogether too perfect for a rough-hewn, earthy art like jazz. But Callaway, who's a proven performer in pop, cabaret and Broadway, once again displays her jazz credentials on this emotionally charged release, an old-fashioned but thoroughly contemporary sounding "concept album" devoted entirely to exploring the mystifying, misty-eyed theme of love.Immediately, the CD's fundamental question is posed by the Cole Porter classic, "What Is This Thing Called Love?" which Callaway delivers with the class and clarity of Waterford Glass. But this fine, lustrous Callaway glass also comes with hip, well-crafted jazz edges.Among other gems are: a witty "Comes Love"; a mix of poetic mystery and barroom swagger on Joni Mitchell's "Carey"; and a vibrant, prayerful rendition of Stevie Nicks' "Landslide."Coming on the heels of Aretha's and Beyonce's renditions at the Inaugural, Callaway cuts loose on a sexy, bluesy "At Last." Warmly impressionistic, "Lazy Afternoon" glows with all the elements of classical bel canto, but is also unabashedly drenched in sensuous, seductively langurous jazz feelings. With its moving, elegant a cappella opening, "Over the Rainbow" is so sweet and lovely that it makes you want to believe in a rainbow-blessed Land of Oz "where troubles melt like lemon drops."Essential download: "Lazy Afternoon"-- Owen McNally Hartford Courant ***** Sounds wonderful! I thought a bit on the Carey description: "a mix of poetic mystery and barroom swagger." "Poetic mystery" sounds very Joni indeed....the "barroom swagger" made me laugh and think of Raised on Robbery, and you know there may be more ..... xo, pp "If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace." -- John Lennon http://www.imaginepeace.com/ _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live: E-mail.
