The Telarc Jazz disc, which celebrates romance, features original songs as well as tunes by Cole Porter, Stevie Nicks, Harold Arlen, Joni Mitchell, Chick Corea and more. The new recording, according to press notes, "is a mix of jazz standards, versatile pop songs and a couple original tunes, each woven together to create a narrative that is perhaps as cinematic as it is musical." In a previous statement Callaway said, "I always think of CDs like movies. You wouldn't download one scene from a movie. You want the whole thing, the whole story. An album shouldn't be just a bunch of songs in a sequence that's front-loaded with hits. It's really about creating an emotional journey that starts in one place and ends in a place that's very different." Callaway is backed by pianist Ted Rosenthal, bassist Jay Leonhart and drummer Victor Lewis. Guest musicians include guitarist Rodney Jones, violinist Mads Tolling, saxophonist Teodross Avery, flugelhornist Marvin Stamm, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon and percussionist Emedin Rivera. The complete track listing for "At Last" follows: "What Is This Thing Called Love?" - Cole Porter "Comes Love" - Lew Brown, Sammy Sept, Charles Tobias "Carey" - Joni Mitchell "At Last" - Mack Gordon, Harry Warren "Spain" - Arte Maren, Al Jarreau, Joaquin Rodrigo, Chick Corea "Lazy Afternoon" - Jerome Moross, John Latouche "Landslide" - Stevie Nicks "Save a Place for Me" - Ann Hampton Callaway "Over the Rainbow - Yip Harburg, Harold Arlen "Finding Beauty" - Ann Hampton Callaway "On My Way to You" - Alan and Marilyn Bergman, Michel Legrand Not only a singer, Ann Hampton Callaway is also an acclaimed songwriter, whose works have been performed by Barbra Streisand, Patti LuPone and dozens of others. For her Broadway bow in Swing!, Callaway garnered a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and her many recordings include "Ann Hampton Callaway," "Bring Back Romance," "To Ella with Love" and "After Ours." Callaway is also a recipient of 14 Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs (MAC) Awards. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Feb 2009 10:39:51 -0500 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: New Joni Cover I listened to a sample yesterday and it sounds great. There is going to be a ballet performance of a Joni song (right now they aren't sure if they can do the CBC theme one because they discovered how much it would cost to get rights!). And Joni will probably be there, but doesn't want anyone to get upset if she is ill and can't come, so they aren't advertising that outright. They're having trouble selling the tickets, so I thought it couldn't hurt to put a shout out here about it in case you or someone you know might be interested in attending. I have a pdf with a form and pricing (it's ouch, expensive, since it's a major fundraiser) that I can send to anyone who's interested! I won't attach it here as I think it probably wouldn't come through or would take up a ton of bandwidth for people. But if you want me to send it to you, please drop me a line! I've no doubt it will be a wonderful event no matter how it shapes up. It's just so silly they can't guarantee Joni, because obviously that'd be a huge draw, but apparently she hasn't been consistently feeling well. (!) By the way, Joni's booked to come for our opening night performance of Fiddle! (My co-workers are having a pre-engagement meeting in the background..) B I like this singer too -- one of the loveliest alto voices out there. But then I prefer alto voices in general even if that means admitting that I am for mid- to late-period Joni. This is speaking voice-wise. B Ann Hampton Callaway is indeed a good songwriter although a few songs she did can get precious and indulgent in my ears (e.g. "I'm-too-white-to-sing-the-blues Blues" from the Blues in the Night CD). Saw her as one of the performers of the Cabaret Convention in 2005 or 2006... I forgot now what year. She composed a song on the spot to honor jazz pianist and occasional singer Barbara Carroll. That night had some good performers and a few that I will probably not liking to hear anytime soon. But AHC was among the night's highlights along with Laurel Masse and Adi Braun. B AHC sung 'Twisted' in one of her albums called 'Signature' backed by the New York Voices. It was a fun ride without being cloying. B Will check her new album out. I wish she'd cover the blues of the mostly forgotten blueswomen-singers of the 1920s-30s like Ida Cox, Sippie Wallace, Memphis Minnie, Margaret Johnson, Virginia Liston and more. She can pull it off.
