It sounds ideal. Lieve, you sound like a born hostess. Can't wait to meet you at OzFest. I hope, together, we can create the same sort of warm and welcoming atmosphere. Obviously, it won't be the same as strolling though Greenwich but, I hope to create the same feelings with bush walks in Kangaroo Valley. I hope that some of the other Brits who were there can make it to OzFest too. How about it Jamie? Garrett? Jeff? For those who might have seen the news about the heatwave hitting Australia right now, don't panic. Only the southern states are experiencing this at the moment and it is a once in 80 years phenomenon. March is usually a bit cooler too. I have not written anything on OzFest for a while because most of the planning has been done and I want to give people a chance to concentrate on SoCal JoniFest for now. I will be posting the information again soon as a reminder of the details. The Australian Open is over now and Nadal is the new champion - incredible stamina. Australia's heroine is Jelena Dockic - the comeback queen. All the way to the semis and people thought her career was over. Turns out, she went further this time than ever before. Heatwaves actually kill more people in Australia than any other weather phenomena. More than cyclones or bushfires. The people of Victoria and South Australia have really suffered this week. Spare a thought for the 40 people who died this week from the heat. Sydney has been pretty uncomfortable but not like the Adelaide and Melbourne. My heart goes out to them. I stay cool by thinking of people like Lucy, hoping for snow in Hampshire. Mmmmmm, snow.... It's the latest in the never-ending monthly releases, Volume #109, another fine collection of recordings of Joni songs performed by others; some famous, some not - some wonderful, some not, some English-speaking, some not. In this case, I believe you'll find a lot to like. Thanks to my good friends Monica and Mark-Leon for their help. You can download all of them here in one big zipfile: http://tinyurl.com/d8kclq And here's the roll call of tunes: 1. Leanne Hynd - Woodstock (acoustic): Some nice acoustic slide guitar gets us sliding into this volume - Saskatchewan country/folk artist Leanne Hynd released TWO versions of Joni's classic Woodstock, this unplugged take and an electric one that closes this set. Both are very well done. 2. DMX Crew - Yellow Taxi: This one is interesting - from the artist name, you'd expect some kind of hip-hop thing, but instead it's a little 2-minute synth workout, it actually comes from a tribute album...to Robert Moog, the father of the synthesizer. I guess they left the "Big" out of the title because it's so short. 3. Sydney Price - Both Sides Now: 4. Sydney Price - Little Green: As I said last week, this is such a lovely song - never fails to affect me, and this recording by Sydney Price is simple and wonderful. A bit more stripped down in sound than her equally lovely treatment of BSN, featuring some additional colors (a plaintive saxophone) but still very open and airy with a soft, comforting arrangement (maybe better to say it's a warm arrangement). Unfortunately I don't have much information on Ms. Price, and these tracks are not available other than here, so get them while you can. 5. Elizabeth Edgecomb - River: From her 2007 CD, another version that doesn't stray too far from Joni's version, which is certainly OK as Joni's version is so powerful. 6. Riddim Saunter - Big Yellow Taxi: Japanese hip hop band Riddim (as in 'rhythm') Saunter puts an interesting spin on Joni's classic. This comes from a vinyl single they released in 2007. 7. We Folk - The Fiddle And The Drum: Don't know much about this one or the people that did it - it came from an old LP. I'm actually a bit surprised that more artists didn't pick up on this as a response to Iraq. 8. Allison Moorer - Both Sides Now: One of the "known" artists on this month's edition, Allison is aka Mrs. Steve Earle and the sister of Shelby Lynne. This comes from her latest CD "Mockingbird" and she plays it in open G (for you guitar nuts out there). Of the song she says "I couldn't make this record without including a Joni Mitchell tune because where would girls with guitars be without her?" 9. Nicol Lischka - A Case Of You: This track kicks off with an accordion - puts me in a Springsteen frame of mind, maybe I'm still thinking about the Super Bowl, but I digress. The accordion is prominent for the entire track and gives it a very fresh feeling. From her 2007 release "Back Porch Light". 10. Maria Pia De Vito - Big Yellow Taxi: You may recall that Maria and her excellent band put out a CD in 2005 called "So Right" that had a slew of Joni covers on it. Well, the more Joni covers the merrier, so she re-released the CD last year and ADDED BYT into the mix, and she totally re-invents the song into a jazz vocal scatfest, stretching it out over 5 minutes plus. Lots of fun. 11. Kay Pfaffl - River: Never mind that she needs to buy a vowel, Kay does a really nice job with Joni's holiday classic, plays it very similar to Joni's own with a piano backup. 12. Elly & Rikkert - Tot De Cirkel Sluit: Here's a Dutch language version of The Circle Game - always fun to hear Joni's words sung in another tongue. This one dates back to 1988. 13. JR & Sharon - Big Yellow Taxi: Husband & wife, he plays guitar, she sings - this one comes from their 1998 CD which proved to be very hard to find, but I stayed on the trail for my fellow JMDLer's. It's a very comfortable version, influenced a bit by the Amy Grant cover. 14. Cat Power - Blue: This was a very high-profile cover last year as Cat Power, aka Chan Marshall, is a high-profile artist and released a whole album of covers. Her arrangement & vocal treatment of Blue is very original and different, very new age airy and free-floating and also happens to be pretty darn nice. 15. Shanti - A Case Of You: Another 2008 track, Shanti (Snyder) knocks it out of the park and throws in a few original expressive flourishes vocally accompanied by piano. 16. Corinne Lucy - Chelsea Morning: UK singer Corinne Lucy (not to be confused with the UK's QUEEN Lucy) turned in this fine live performance on YouTube and it only seemed natural to pass it along to fellow fans. 17. Melody Gardot - Blue Motel Room: You may recall seeing Melody sing "Edith & The Kingpin" with Herbie Hancock a little while ago; this nice recording of the Hejira standard comes from a live radio broadcast she had posted on her website, and features a fine original vocal from Melody + a nice horn solo. She's one to watch; she definitely puts her distinctive stamp on it. 18. Bar Nones - Both Sides Now: This one goes back a ways, probably to around 1969 when everyone was doing the song. The Bar Nones were one of the musical groups at Albert Magnus College in New Haven, Connecticut. Listen closely for Patti P, I'm betting she snuck in on the session. 19. The Rock Masters - Big Yellow Taxi: Just when I thought the "cover the Counting Crows cover" craze had subsided, here comes another one, released last year. Can't tell you anything about The Rock Masters, except that they are neither. 20. Leanne Hynd - Woodstock (Electric): Which will bring us back to doe....as promised, here is the other bookend, this time Leanne and band plug in and jam a bit on Woodstock, with equally pleasing results. I thought it appropriate to tack this one on to the "hynd" end of the disc. And there you have it - another month, another CD's worth of Joni covers for your listening enjoyment. Hope you find plenty here to bring a smile to your face, and if you do, I'd love to hear your feedback. I'll publish another retro edition in a couple of weeks and Volume 110 will be here before you know it - after all, February IS the shortest month y'know. (Search 'nash' on the site to get all 3 parts.) http://www.goldminemag.com/article/Graham_Nash_holds_nothing_back_part_2/ **** Merci mille fois! And now it has FOUR parts! Four-Way Street. I finally got to read it all tonight. I love how he said he was on "cloud ten" when he was with Joni, and how the author/interviewer said he was the "least-likely-to-implode" member of CSNY. LOL! And he sure does use the F word a lot! Oh, my goodness! Just like the last time you saw him, RR. The last time I saw Graham was Torrington in October 2008 and it was one of the best concerts of my life. He was with David and he opened the show with something like this: "The world is really a messed-up place, isn't it? Well, we want you all to just sit back and relax and enjoy the music tonight. You are with friends." They were in the zone the whole night and we all were with them. There are no words. (Again the song Old Friends/Bookends springs to heart and mind. They complete each other so well.) Have I ever told you how much I love Graham Nash? Yes? No? Well I'm going to tell you again now if you're still listening there... Just last night I found a great youtube documentary on the the making of the cover for the "Crosby Stills & Nash" album (released May 29, 1969). I was going to share it here but got distracted by something (clouds got in my way, maybe) and meant to do it today. It would be the perfect accompaniment to this GOLDMINE article, but merde, merde, MERDE! It has been removed from youtube. Don't you HATE that? So it's up to me to share it in words. It was an interview with Henry Diltz and Gary Burden, husband of Annie from LOTC (she may bake some brownies today) and Willy and David and Stephen. Maybe some of you have seen it before, but it was a thing that was unique and new for me. Halfway through the 7 minute youtube they showed Joni and Graham and David and Stephen in the limo going up to Big Bear. They zeroed in on Joni writing in the limo (you all know those sweet pictures) and either Henry or Gary said she was writing the lyrics to Willy. It then showed them frolicking around in the snow. Willy fell into a bush and ripped his pants and it showed Joni putting a band-aid on his butt! (LOL! She got all Joni Mitchell on his ass, Catherine!) Then it showed David talking about them all prancing in the snow in their fur-lined parkas and he was hysterically funny. He said they were all just "little penises in fur" with mischievous/bad thoughts in their minds. Then again, maybe the youtube I punched was dreaming. But then again, no. No! I *know* I saw it! If it ever comes back I'll be sure to share it. And in some great cosmic synchronicity/quelle coincidence, I just read in the newspaper that today is Willy's birthday. Happy 67th Birthday, Willy! I just have to say I love you, right out loud. xo, pp, really looking forward to the new boxed set "If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace." -- John Lennon http://www.imaginepeace.com/ _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail. goes where you go.
