American TV series "House" has an episode titled "Sex Kills". Wikipedia says it indeed alludes to Joni's song. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_Kills BTW, check out the series if you can, imho it's pretty good. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jan 2009 15:20:07 -0700 From: "Laurie Fuhr" Subject: Joni Mitchell Gala with Unreleased Track, ballet Psst... this just in from our Artistic Director! Super inside scoop, like, pistachio! :-) I was hearing the song through the studio door on my way out for lunch today, and it was driving me crazy trying to figure out what the song was!! Has anyone heard this song? I bet you've got it on bootlegs.. Hey I wouldn't mind hooking up a bootleg with someone that had the song he's talking about! I could trade for a Counting Crows boot but it's on cassette. So the gala he's talking about is a fundraising dinner called Raising the Barre. Tickets are $500 each (ouch!) or I think $10,000 for a table (ye gods), and the buyers either sit for dinner at a big table with a dancer, with the Artistic Director, or with Joni, but you don't know who it's going to be... Laurie "From: Jean Grand-Maitre, Artistic Director" The new ballet for the Gala will be called The Way it Is It last 3 minutes 33 seconds. Is is from a very early CBC recording (before Joni even had a record contract). The sound is mediocre but we can easily tell it is a vintage recording. This song is unique in that it has never been recorded on any of her CDs. We will project her singing the song (the entire video is a close up of her face and we do not even see her guitar). So we have a world premiere with Joni singing on the circular screen and the dancers below. The order of the shoe for the gala will be: 1-Woodstock 2-For the Roses 3-If 4-Big Yellow Taxi 5-Short speech by me 6-World premiere: The Way it Is Edmund please send the casting to all company. There are recordings of her playing it on the broadcasts and also in concert at the Club 47 in Boston back in January 1968. Big Yellow Taxi, a Joni cover group located in Denmark, did a great cover of it a couple years ago, you can hear a clip of it here: http://cdbaby.com/cd/bigyellowtaxi4 Bob NP: Ani Difranco, "Shameless" (Living in Clip) - ------------------------------------------------------------ The information transmitted is intended only for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain proprietary, business-confidential and/or privileged material. I also think it's one of Joni's most unique offerings; I don't think anything else from any other album compares to it conceptually. Two others? I've always liked the opening trio on side one, so, "In France They Kiss on Main Street" and "Edith & The Kingpin." My three-cents worth, anyway. Welcome aboard the Joni schooner, where we'll treat you like a queen if you keep sharing such great Joni stories! (Pardonnez-moi. Will you take me as I am? I have JMOCD, or Joni Tourette's, as some call it. She is in my blood like holy wine and part of her comes pouring out of me in these lines, from time to time. A friend gave me STAS when it first came out. I was 13 and have listened to her ever since, except for a bit of a lapse in the 80s and 90s when I had childs to raise. Leonard Cohen was right.) Just Joni-joking about the queen business. Hopefully everyone here gets treated with affection and respect. You shared in part: "I finally met her later in the evening at Banff Centre. Joni came into the little campus pub and was looking to play pool, so I asked her to be my partner. What an amazing pool player Joni is!! Good thing I was on her team, not playing against her! When she sets up that LA rack, you're either on her side or you're in trouble. Thank you Joni for humouring me with a game, even though I seem to have lost all my Northern Alberta, smalltown, nothing-else-to-do-all-night pool skills! Joni tells a lot of stories when she's playing pool, so that was definitely worth the embarrassment of poor performance. (We won 4 out of 5 games anyway thanks to Joni!)." Holy mackerel and fresh salmon frying! Joni plays pool, too? Is there *anything* she does not do well? Uh oh. TIC! (Don't say I didn't warn ya.) With his head full of pool hall pitches And songs from the hit parade He'd be singing "Bye Bye Love" While he's racking up his free play Did she sing for you while playing? (No, of course not. I'm just being silly.) Again, welcome, and we look forward to more from you. Singing "Bye Bye Loves", for now, Patti P. in CT, who can't play pool either "If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace." -- John Lennon http://www.imaginepeace.com/ _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live: E-mail.
