Hi Jim, I've just listened to the two versions side by side on youtube (obvious sound quality issues) and i don't think they sound the same, at all (well besides it being the same song;-). Also, for the record, i don't like Beyonce singing it. I think less would be more in her version, if you know what i mean. Judy Collins has been (was much more during the 70' early 80's) mucho important in my life..as was Buffy, Odetta, Joan Baez, and so many more. I saw Judy Collins at The Academy of Music, late '70's, and sat way up front. She was, in a word, glorious. 'Michael From Mountains' is still my all time favorite. I was in California in 1962 and played it constantly. Judy Collins sings "Everything Must Change"...I played that on the anniversary of my father's death. Sobbed, of course, but found it to be, in a way, so reasonable..so soothing. I haven't read all that much about Judy's relationship with Joni...has anyone??? Way back when...and still...Joni, Judy, Carly, Carole, Joan, , Dylan (as a song writer), Laura, Marvin, all of Motown, so many others...but Joni has always and will always be on the very top of that list. As a matter of fact, I can't even put her on a list...I know, I just did, but you know what I mean. Love to all, Bo ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Jan 2009 01:11:25 -0600 From: Robert Procyk Subject: fiddle and the drum in saskatoon Ok, it's late, and my dysfunctional computer is not cooperating with unloading my camera, but I just had to give a brief report about the Fiddle and the Drum last night in Saskatoon. Let me just say that I really wasn't prepared for how awesome it actually was - the tv special doesn't do it justice. But anyway, I am not going to go on about the actual show, as I know that many have seen it and posted on it already - I just want to say that the show gave me a newfound appreciation for Shine - I was completely blown away by "If" at the end. I also loved "The Beat of Black Wings" and as much as am not a real fan of "the Reoccuring Dream", it was a damn good number. If only they'd do DED in its entirety..... I am sure Kate will have a real review (I am still too scattered to formulate one right now), but let me just say I wish I would have got tickets to both nights. Anyway, let's get to the Joni sightings: We were sitting in the front row, right at the end. We had the first 4 seats (we took my 7 year old and 5 year old daughters, since they are both ballet dancers, and left the other two kids with my inlaws). I was expecting Joni to be up in one of the boxes in the balcony, so I kept glancing up before the show started and didn't see her, so I actually thought that maybe she didn't make it because of the weather - it was damn near 40 below. So, the show is about to start, and some dude from the Sask. Arts Council or some such thing comes out to welcome everyone and he says "Welcome, Joni" and he's looking out on the floor, so I start turning around and see nothing, and then suddenly my wife looks and goes "Oh there she is Rob, almost behind us". Well, 2 rows back and a couple of seats over was Joni and her father. Well, this is where I turn into a complete lunatic. Back in 2000, when she had the Mendel show and a bunch of us met he r, it was exciting, but I didn't turn into a complete idiot or anything. However, I got all wigged out when I found out that she was like 6 feet away from me, and as soon as I discovered she was there, the show started. Well, I swear to God, I started to have a panic attack. I mean, seriously. I was sitting there, trying to watch "Sex Kills", and all I can do is think "holy f**k, I am going to throw up any second, 6 feet away from Joni and her dad - what a bad first impression." LOL, anyway, it took me about 10 minutes to get it together, and then I actually forgot she was there. At intermission, she got up and left her father sitting there (I am assuming she went to smoke), and it was one of those moments I wished I still smoked. However, I wasn't about to go stand out by the stage door when it was 40 below and pretend I was smoking so we hung around and then right before the show started again, Joni walked to her seat and everyone g ave her a huge round of applause and she was very gracious. Then, at the end of the show, after BYT, she came out with the dancers, and as soon as I saw a distant flashbulb go off I started yelling intensely to Tracy "get the camera, take a picture, take pictures, don't stop!" in a frantic tone akin to the woman in the IKEA ads who yells "start the car!!!!!" So anyway, she's fumbling with the camera and apparently, I didn't know this until later, this crotchety bugger behind us got his panties in a knot and kept saying to his wife "it's illegal... I don't care, it's still illegal." Well, if I had known that, I would have turned to him and made up some elaborate story about how I was here all the way from Bugtussle, covering the event for the JMDL, but sadly, I didn't have a chance to do that. Anyway, Tracy got about 7 pics - I'll email them around or they are posted on my facebook pictures, so feel free to look at them or take them and do whatever you want. If you click on them and enlarge them, they ain't half bad. Joni looked great - however, it freaked me out because she looked just like DED era Joni. Just look and you'll know what I mean. People were courteous and didn't bother her in the auditorium, and we were right next to her dad on the way out. We were going to drive by the stage doors after but they had 3 buses there, and cops, and it was 40 below and I had two cold children and I sort of thought this was Joni's night at home with her friends, so I didn't hang around in hopes of another quick meet. Anyway, that's it in a nutshell. I am sure Kate will make much more sense!
