B Anyone interested can see the first half (i.e. the Hollerers etc) tonight on BBC4, and the second half (about Greenwich Village) next week Friday (30 Jan).B There is also a BBC4 Folk America documentary series, I think in 3 parts, which begins tonight, preceding the concert. B The line-up forB yesterday's Greenwich Village Revisited concert was: Judy Collins, Roger Mc Guinn, Eric Andersen and Carolyn Hester.B The Barbican was sold out, there was not surprisinglyB a preponderance of grey hair in the audience, with the odd child or younger adult here and there.B I must admit that even for me the peak Greenwich Village folk period is really before my music listening time, but as a child I had an uncle who used to sing songs like "This Land is Your Land" and "If I had a Hammer", and of course my love for Joni Mitchell's and Bob Dylan's music has made me read up later on that period, so I really went to this concert out of curiosity, almost like to a history lecture.B And itB turned outB a very enjoyable evening. B The stage had been dressed like a club with tables, table lamps, posters on the walls and old b/w photos of folk clubs projected on screens. B The first one to start was Roger Mc Guinn.B (One of the first LPs I ever bought was one of the Byrds, because I had heard the song about aB mare with the chorus "I'm gonna get that horse if I can - andB when I do I'll give her my bran" - -B that's how I learnt my English...)B He looked slim and young, and his voice was totally unchanged.B He started with an Odetta song (she was mentioned and applauded several times during the concert), some Dylan (My Back Pages) and Pete Seeger (Turn Turn),B which are also Byrds classics of course, and he told us some anecdotes (like that he went looking forB a talented female singerB and found her in Cambridge, Boston, "an older woman with beautiful long black hair" - that was Joan Baez, she was 19 and he was 18!). B He was followed by Carolyn Hester.B I had read about her, knew she had been married to Richard Farina, turned down the offer to sing with Peter and Paul (so MaryB took it) etc, but had never seen her or heard her sing.B She must beB over 70 by now, but you can see what a stunning beauty she must have been and in a way still is.B Not many octogenarians can get away with wearing their white hair long and loose, but she's one of them.B And her voice was beautiful, highB and clear, I was really surprised.B She played the guitar (also accompanied by a guitar student from Liverpool) and the piano.B I'm very sorry I can't remember the names of theB songs, but I was impressed and surprised she had not had more of a career. B Next was Eric Andersen.B I only heardB of him by reading about Joni in "Girls Like Us".B Apparently he taught her guitar techniques (open tunings) when they were bothB in Toronto and then in New York.B He still looked pretty good, but his voice was much gone.B You could tell he must once have had a beautiful voice, but it really croaked now.B Still, his guitar and piano playing were beautiful.B I was hoping for some Joni anecdotes but he only mentioned her casually.B Then Roger Mc Guinn joined him, they remenisced how they had toured together in '69 and '70 (Roger joked that Eric had been the one making money, getting $500 per night, while he with the Byrds was losing money because they had to pay for trucks and the whole entourage) and then they ended with a song together - sorry, Alzheimer strikes again, can't remember what it was. B Finally it was Judy Collins' turn.B I knew from reviews on this list in the last years that she was still very good, and I can only say I was really won over.B She was warm, funny, and oozing with stage presence.B Her soprano is still strong, again I must apologise for not remembering the names of most songs.B She started with Both Side Now, and told the anecdote of when someone (I think she said Al Cooper, if that makes sense?) followed Joni home one night, "thinking he was just following a pretty girl home", but then she started singing his songs for him and he said: "Hold on, I must ring Judy Collins and let her hear this" and that is how Judy heard "Both Side Now" and decided to record it. She also told the story of Leonard Cohen coming round to her place.B She had never met him before but he had let her know that he "kind-of wrote poems, and wanted to know if he could sing and if his songs were any good" and she listened to him and said: "Yes, you can kind-of sing, and your songs are OK, and I am recording them tomorrow!"B She also said she was one of the few lucky women who had not fallen in love with Leonard. B I should also say that the evening was compered by Billy Bragg.B I'm not a fan of his, but he did the job.B He sang some Woody Guthry songs, and Buffy St Marie's "Universal Soldier", and mentioned several times what a great fan of Phil Ochs he is. At the end, he called all 4 singers back and they sang Amazing Grace as an encore.B (Judy Collins told the story of how she and many other people in the "biz", like Jack Holzman, were at an "encounter group" for drug addicts when tempers were getting heated, so Judy sang this song and all ruffled fethers were smoothed.) I'm sorry that I'm not a better music reviewer, but if I have whetted your appetite, then do try to see the show on BBC4 next week!B Lieve in London. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jan 2009 11:41:07 -0500 From: anon anon Subject: Michelle Obama loved the Herbie Hancock/Joni album... http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/news.php?id=28630 _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail. goes where you go. When Beyonce sang "At Last" at the Neighborhood Ball, the arrangement sounded just like my memory of Joni's take, arranged by Vince Mendoza. Is that an off-the-shelf arrangement? The music sounded just like Joni's track, right down to the drummer dragging time slightly (on purpose). Is it possible that Joni loaned the whole backing track to the Obama campaign? Now that I've heard it again, I still think it sounds like Joni's recording of Mendoza's arrangement. I left my Joni CDs at the local radio station so I couldn't compare them. Am I off-base? There are lots of videos at this site and the "behind the scenes videos are pretty interesting too; I like when John Mellencamp said he forgot to sing sometimes because he was enjoying everyone else so much.
