Whilst the majority of this list are freezing their collective butts off, there is a whole half a planet down here in the grips of Summer. So, naturally, I have turned my attention to Joni's Summer themed songs. As with most things Joni sings about, her vivid descriptions of Summer bring melancholic visions of childhood memories of long, hot Summer days and current images of Summer. As an Australian, I always related well to phrases like :The hissing of Summer lawns" but I wonder if my antipodean views match with what Joni had in mind. I always assumed the "hissing" came from the sound of cicadas which are usually abundant around the Sydney area and I know, from watching documentaries that they are plentiful in the northeastern United States too. They make that hissing sound when they mate in the Summer months. Then I started to think that maybe Joni was singing about the sound of water sprinklers, watering the California lawns or maybe it was something else more esoteric. Crickets also make a hissing sound in the Summer too. It has been a mild Summer here so far, except for a couple of heatwave days last week and I haven't heard much from the cicadas this year. Then again, there aren't so many lawns in the city where I live now. The odd thing is, cicadas don't live in the grass. They live in trees. I know this is not exactly a life defining question but it just got me wondering. The sound of cicadas was a dominant feature of Summer for me as a child. The hotter it got, the louder the cicadas got. I grew up in a very middle class area of Sydney and there weren't the water restrictions we have these days so, every house had sprinklers going on their lawns too and they seem to make a hissing sound too. I do hope you all had a lovely new year. For those who follow the Chinese calendar, yours is still to come and for those who follow the Jewish calendar, it was several months ago. Happy new year to you all. Right now we have temperatures below zero (Celsius) but at least light is slowly but surely returning to the Northern hemisphere. Hope you are enjoying your more agreeable temperature. It's interesting how we interpret Joni's lyrics depending on our own surroundings and experience. I have never heard cicadas but I imagine they are something like grasshoppers? I do associate grasshoppers with summer but not with the hissing of lawns since grasshoppers make a chirpy sound, to my ears anyway. I have always assumed that the hissing of summer lawns was caused by sprinklers. Or maybe snakes.I know it isn't very likely to find snakes lurking in Beverly Hills lawns but the relationship Joni describes in the song would be a nightmare to me, and in a nightmare, anything is possible. Have a nice weekend, Marion ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Jan 2009 10:49:33 -0800 (PST) From: Jeannie Subject: Re: Herbie My head just did a major juke box dive with that thought and I get all choked up with joy thinking of our very own Joni singing up there during such an eventful moment. But I'm just very happy having Joni in our lives all these years taking the bull on by the horns when very few others did and for me, Joni is part of it all from the very beginnings of this whole, wonderful transformation. I've just been watching Diana Krall singing ACOY Live in Paris (at the bottom of Page 7) - - lovely piano arrangement! and Joni singing 'Cactus Tree' (on Page 17 - from her BBC concert back in 1970) - which, along with Marcie and Sisotobell Lane, first hooked me into her wonderful music back in 1968 and which still remain among my 8 'Desert Island Jonis'. very best PaulC NP Bjork singing Boho Dance in the 'Tracks' section of the same site - [ Direct Link - http://www.deezer.com/track/89075 ] Brilliant! Love her phrasing and the way she pronounces "Books where artists in noble poverty go like virgins to the grave" and shouts "Don't you get sensitive on me" ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Jan 2009 21:29:40 +0100 From: Moni Kellermann Subject: Re: Hissing Wie Marion Leffler so vortrefflich formulierte: > I have always assumed that the hissing of summer lawns was > caused by sprinklers. It can't be easy capturing the water from a sprinkler the way you did. It really conjures up a summery image. My vision (what is a sound-vision? a hearing?) of "Hissing" is a bit more like Mark's though. I remember very hot days and nights when I was a kid hearing the cicadas whining, and when I first heard "The hissing of summer lawns," the thing that immediately came to mind was insects for some reason, although hot summer days when I was a kid always involved sprinklers AND bugs, so it's hard to separate the two. It wouldn't be summer without cicadas and crickets and grasshoppers and things buzzing and rustling and chirping and whining. And hissing. - --- On Sat, 1/17/09, Moni Kellermann wrote: From: Moni Kellermann Subject: Re: Hissing To: "Marion Leffler" , joni@smoe.org Received: Saturday, January 17, 2009, 3:29 PM Wie Marion Leffler so vortrefflich formulierte: > I have always assumed that the hissing of summer lawns was > caused by sprinklers.
