Ahhhh....such beauty and Joni's singing goes straight into my soul..it feels like a warm home where I'm always welcome. A true Christmas gift for me. I'm gleaming and I feel all shampooed and renewed. For those that don't know, this is lyrics of Woody Guthrie that Jonatha set to music. Things that make this Joni-enough that I haven't marked this post njc: - - Joni takes inspiration from Dylan who takes inspiration from Guthrie. It's a grand tradition. - - Like Joni, Jonatha frequently uses alternate tunings in her music and those weird minor chords. - - Like Joni, as far as I can tell, Jonatha has the respect of other musicians and a devoted fan-base, but is probably unknown on mainstream radio (strangely enough, I did hear a Muzak-type rendition of one of her songs a while back when i was shopping for groceries and was shocked, in a good way.) Reasons why this album just could be a major tearjerker: - - It's made with love, love and more love - - Reading the loving words of Woody Guthrie in songs to his wife, family and others, some sweet, some sexy, some sweet and sexy evokes a feeling of such nostalgia that you're bound to get tears in your eyes, or at least a lump in the throat for at least one song. It is such a tribute and sheds a whole new light on a singer-songwriter who is long gone. "Madonna on the Curb" is a song about homelessness. The lyrics were written in 1939. Plus ca change... From the opening words of "Sweetest Angel," which could be for a lover or a child, I felt a lump in my throat. Here are the opening lines: "Every night about eight o'clock I wind the stem of my little clock And when I look in the crystal glass I see a lot of faces pass Of those I knew And those I know And you now coming And you to go "Here's a word I'd like to whisper And I'd like to have you listen "All this world is made of love You are fresh from heaven above You're the sweetest angel in this world" And here's another lyric that just about ripped my heart out, from "My Battle", apparently written when Woody was dying: "And I will never dread the day I will die 'Cause my sunset is somebody's morning sky." Not only is this a tearjerker - but in a bittersweet kind of way that makes you appreciate your loved ones more - but I think this is the best album I've heard in a long, long time. Jonatha definitely deserves kudos - at least one kudo ;-) - for this. Please give it a listen but, more than that, buy it and support good music! You can read the lyrics and hear clips of the music at Jonatha's website: http://www.jonathabrooke.com/music/the-works/?url=music/the-works __________________________________________________________________ Be smarter than spam. At first I was a bit resistant, since musically it doesn't seem like Woody Guthrie, but repeated close listenings and attention to the very personal lyrics Catherine mentions have won me over. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Catherine McKay Sent: Tuesday, December 23, 2008 4:03 PM To: joni@smoe.org Subject: Speaking of songs that'll make you cry I just got Jonatha Brooke's "The works" yesterday and have just finished listening to it. Joni Mention I guess this is jc. Well, just about. some of you may already have had a look at my blog which is linked at the bottom of my emails. I guess I'm mentioning it here because it has Joni content. I was introducing the wider world (or my friends who read my blog) to my little Joni-obsession and included 'River' in it. As some of you know I'm going up to Base Camp of Mt Everest in April to raise money for charity and I guess my blog got on a more reflective tone listening to River a lot these days. Please have a read. And if you can, post us your 2008 - 3 Good Things, 1 Bad Thing. That will be no-Joni. Well, it might be Joni. Who knows? If I don't post you in between time, have a Merry Christmas/Festive Season and A Happy New Year.
