Overture/Cotton Ave is a wildly transporting opening of one of the greatest albums ever. DJRD (as a couple of you know) is my usually 1st place fave Joni work...Yes...an extension of Hejira opened to wider thought, locale and human experience....and that music....over the years the only song that has fallen a couple of notches is "Talk to Me". I guess it's my (now) least fave song out of an album of gem varieties par excellance) If I was a better wordsmith I could wax poetic on the wonderful influence this work has had on me...But I'm not, so I won't....I would be happy to share my interpretive dance illustrating the deep musical joy this work continues to give me 32 years after the day it was released..I bought in Pueblo, CO and have owned 8 or 9 copies since... While Hejira takes me on a journey, DJRD propels me into orbits. It's rather lengthy and starts off with a long musical guitar intro, which to my ears inspired Joni's guitar riff in "Help Me" (though I'm sure she'd never cop to it). This was a hard to find track and I had to pay a premium for the LP it was originally on. Now it's been re-released on CD and even on I-tunes so it's easier to come by, and well worth the journey. It really is like a journey into another dimension in a way. I had bought this album after THOSL and Hejira so I wasn't sure what to expect! Expect the unexpected! Every album I was buying was so different from the next. I still recall listening to FTR the first time and being blown away by the difference and substance of the album. Anyway, back to DJRD. I don't think I could live without the songs DJRD, Talk To Me, and The Silky Veils of Ardor. DJRD, the song, is just so vast that there are really no words to express my sentiments on it. It goes in all directions yet it intersects at the same time. Talk To Me, is a simple song in the content, but a song that I'm sure all of us could relate to at one time or another. It is universal. The Silky Veils Of Ardor is just a heart gripping (yes, heart gripping!) tale...a warning...coming from an experienced but scorned speaker.
