Yes, 'One Week Last Summer' must be one of the hardest songs to put a melody/lyric to. I get snatches of melody but then I get influenced by the Wayne Shorter line. Fitting a melody in between the piano and the sax. Hmmmmm.... I've always wondered if Joni'd ever meant to have sung the poem in the Paprika Plains medallion. Perhaps it'll be a JoniFest competition at some point. Who can come up with the most singable (or the most Joni-like) melody (note, singable and Jonilike could be miles apart!). Reading Cotton Avenue on Wordle like that made me think that it's the most un-Jonilike lyric of all... It's kinda like disco, but then maybe she was going out a lot more. A few years ago when I was 33/34 (the same age Joni was when writing some of DJRD) I would go out a lot more than I did in my 20s and end up at mine at 5 o'clock in the morning. I remember the first time I heard it VERY vividly, probably more than the first time I heard ANY album ever. Of course, DJRD was the follow-up to Hejira, and I was still very much in awe & love with it and anxiously awaiting Joni's next move. WQDR, the local station in Raleigh that played an alternative to the top 40 and lots of deep tracks had gotten it in that day, before it was available in the stores. They played the title track & Talk To Me and the DJ stated that they would be featuring the album in its entirety that night at midnight. So, at midnight, I had my blank Maxell tape all cued up and the headphones on... Cotton Avenue kicks off the album as you know, with that airy spacy guitar intro which transitions with Jaco's bass bombs. And those vocal slides! "You just go noooooooooplace....speciaaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllllll...." I was blown away! It was like Hejira in some ways, but 180 degrees different in others. You could tell that Joni was taking off into previously uncharted territory, and you were either along for the ride or left in the dust with your folk albums. It wasn't a big leap for me because I had not really been introduced to Joni through that earlier period and I loved everything about DJRD (with the exception the Tenth World which I though went on too long but I have since gained a better appreciation for it). Anyway, I could go on and on about this masterpiece of an album, a soundtrack to a mystical never-made film. A true wonder. Of course I'd have to move to New Mexico (I see it being partially set in the dusty mesas and partially in Southern California (with a brief trip to Jamaica). Though having never been to any of those places, this is just some Brit-born, Malaysian-Raised, Joni-induced fantasy trip. It's so left-field that it does feel like a film. Well, I guess most of Joni's albums feel like a 43 minute film. Apart from DJRD which is feature-length. I'm seeing a LOT of drugs in this film however, perhaps it's about a woman's fall abundance, decline and emergence through love and drugs. I've ALWAYS wanted Paprika Plains as part of a film soundtrack! Thanks Jeannie for the plug to my voiceover site! I am glad those who were in the film, were in the film. I told my brother and sister (who also saw the film) that if I was that boy who went out into the wild, I would have just stayed with the hippies. Forget Alaska (actually I myself would never choose willingly to go to Alaska...much too cold man!). Besides the main character, the hippies were my favorite characters. You know, I can understand the appeal of just going off somewhere and saying to hell with everyone else in search of something more. Many things expressed in the film, I easily understood. The main guy's death was such a tragedy. He was obviously very bright and could have used his travels as a launch pad to become a writer. I guess I'll say his life was a triumph but his death a tragedy. - -Monika - --- On Wed, 12/17/08, Stephen_Epstein@hugoboss.com wrote: This was a GREAT film- must say I do not remember the Joni mention, tho do recall the scene. Don't think the singer was related to the couple in the mobile home. It truly resonated with me and tho I rarely do this, thought this is one I might purchase and watch again and again. I will! Funny story about the "hippie", who is played by Brian Dierker- not an actor. I am in the clothing business, and when this film was premiering @ the Toronto Film Festival in September 2007, we dressed Sean Penn and some of the cast for the gala and subsequent press outings. Brian, the hippie, was one of them. Went to his hotel room, met his wife, and heard his story. Never acted before, he has a couple of companies, one of which is a river boat which is rigged for filming along the Colorado river, and he was hired to film some scenes in the movie. Sean Penn kept asking him to act in the movie, Brian kept saying no, I'm not an actor, just an aging hippie. Penn said that's exactly what I want you to be. Brian refused at least three times. After many attempts, I guess Penn finally convinced him! He was one of the most genuine people I have met- salt of the earth without pretensions. Looks exactly the same in person as in the movie, long hair in a pony tail, very tall, wonderful energy, and really is an aging hippie!! It was great fun for me to meet him. thanks for the memories! best Stephen in Toronto NP: Billy Paul "Lately" I recently saw the movie Into The Wild (and will soon read the book!). In it, there was a Joni reference. This has probably been mentioned and I'm sure it is already on the site listed as such. However, I watched this very compelling film based on a true story of a young man who goes off "into the wild," without money, identification, breaking off all ties with the world in pursuit of something more I guess you could say. However, he does meet up with different people along the way, including a pair of hippies and their friends. At one point, they are all watching a show with the pair of hippies' friends including a young female performer (or maybe she was related to them, I'm not sure). Later on, the one hippie man told the main character to go and introduce himself to her saying something along the lines of, "why don't you go introduce yourself to our Joni Mitchell?" - -Monika This e-mail (and/or attachments) is confidential and may be privileged. And this is what they say : It's not deceptively simple, just simple. From the bare arrangements of acoustic guitar and piano with maybe a hint of dulcimer, to the lyrics "All I really want our love to do/ Is to bring out the best in me/ and in you, too" Mitchell whittles her journal entries and melodies down with poetic economy and relies on her falsetto to add the dramatic tension. There is something very different about her language and her vocals in this song, but I'm at a loss for the words to describe this at the moment. It's very jazzy to me. Reminds me of a movie from the 40s or 50s maybe. Sorry, can't get a good grip on it, so I'll just leave it at that. __________________________________________________________________ Yahoo! It was recorded for last year's RocKwiz Christmas special at St Kilda's Palais Theatre in Melbourne. Incidentally, keep viewing after River for Tim Freedman singing a terrific version of Ron Sexmith's Maybe This Christmas. http://www.sbs.com.au/rockwiz/past/287/Tim-Freedman Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. And since it got an official release on CD I've added it to our burgeoning database. The Rivers were particularly overflowing this week. Because I was living on the paprika plains of far northwest North Dakota, just over the line from Saskatchewan, at the time of DJRD's release, "Cotton Avenue" always reminds me of the one "big city" we could most easily reach: Regina. That will always be my special "no place special." It is reintroduced later in the film too. The director in the commentary says that they used the song while rehearsing the more intimate scenes and he thought it suitable as the opener to the film. Its a film I had been wanting to see for a while and which I ordered just over a week ago from HMV. Hearing Joni as it started was a bonus I did not expect!! It really excited me. I remember the Joni mention in Into the Wild too. Another good movie in my opinion. I also love Hejira and DJRD although when I first heard them both I was furious with Joni and wanted a tune! I made myself listen to them and got into them so much that they became my favourite albums and still are. At the time though much as I got to love them I remember breathing a sigh of big relief when I heard her singing Unchained Melody at the end of Chinese Cafe. I had somewhere still been waiting for some melody...some Mitchell melody. They were fine times. Waiting for an album. Massive disappointment on initial hearing. Multiple forced listenings to them and learning every word even though I could not comprehend what she was doing or where she had gone but willing to go with her and thank God I did because those are the albums I like the most. I do love it when she sings a tune though and the Tribute version of Both Sides Now which I caught on You Tube blows me away completely. Melody or not though she sings it like she feels it and it gets into your marrow doesnt it. She is the best! ------------------------------> > > > "I could drink a case of you and still be on my> feet." ------------------------------> > End of JMDL Digest V2008 #325> *****************************> > -------> Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org> Unsubscribe by clicking here:> mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe> ------- _________________________________________________________________ Are you a PC?
