Snap! We had two of the same. Katie Noonan and Renee Geyer - that woman is a legend. I wasn't aware of her work with Chaka. I might have been confusing Wendy Matthews. Oh yeah! I'd like to add Wendy Matthews. Ex-pat Canadian who worked with Barbra and Aretha before settling in Sydney and changing the Australian music scene. Token Angels is still one of my favourite songs. Joan Armatrading's Willow is gorgeous too. Such an inspirational song. I was blown away this morning when I received a personal e-mail from one of my all time favourite singer/songwriters - Peggy Van Zalm. I have followed her career since her debut release with her band, Martha's Vineyard and was just trying to find out if that album is still available. I never expected to get a reply from the lady herself. On her website, she sites Joni as one of her influences http:// homepages.tig.com.au/~pvzalm/ Check her out on YouTube too. "me too! do you belong to the jmdl?" "what's that?" she asked. sooo, i explained with a brief description, she writing it all down. later, at home, i sent her links to the jmdl and joni homepages. i may have turned a fellow joni fan on to the jmdl. cool. - - mc ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Dec 2008 14:27:45 +0000 From: Gordon Mackie Subject: Live At The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion Mark/ Bob Thanks for these. A real treat. As you say, not the best sound but I'm grateful to have them. If only there were official recordings out there. I just came across this interview in the latest Le Nouvel Observateur (No. 2300 du 4 au 10 decembre 2008) for anyJonione who understands the language spoken where they kiss on Main Street (CoT, Mags, and you know there may be more...) The One You're With;. Inchoate (Hi Richard!) translation: "Earlier in the evening, an emotional shiver traversed the crowd when, at the end of the concert, Stephen Stills invited his ex-wife VS and their son son Christopher to join him on the stage of The Olympia to sing "Love The One You're With." Catherine, I know you posted a video of this recently (here, or on FB?...I can't remember). Magnifique! Merci! (Encore une fois, s'il te plait?) Alors, voila: http://hebdo.nouvelobs.com/hebdo/parution/p2300/articles/a389957-.html?xtmc=s ansonstills&xtcr=1 There are two photos in the hard copy version if you can get your hands on it in a bookstore or library. (Le couple en 1977; Stephen Stills et Veronique Sanson aujourd'hui.) And in some Joni-in-the-workplace news, my awesome student worker, Ali, who loves Joni (when I interviewed her and she saw my WWJM magnet...well, you know how those moments go! Was the word "Aukkk" or something like that?) auditioned for multiple dramatic productions here by singing Chelsea Morning. She got the part she wanted! This kid's a keeper. She showed me the songbook she borrowed from a music professor and we were oohing and ahhing over the drawings. Some people came into my office and saw us Joni-jubilating and just shook their heads. ; ) Vive la Joan! Love, Patti P. in Storrs, CT, ou il pleut dans la ville comme il pleut dans mon coeur P.S. I hear that Obama is looking for a Car Czar. I nominate Neil Young! He'd do his best and he'd do good business, rocking in the free world. In no particular order: - -Joni Mitchell (as I said before, she makes you FEEL what she is singing): River - -Roger Daltrey: Love Reign O'er Me (He has such a powerful rock voice and a very strong singing voice in general, listen to his first solo album to hear his "non-rock" singing and hear his range) - -John Lennon: Yer Blues, Cold Turkey (Perfect expression. Successful rock singing.) - -Elvis Presley: Jailhouse Rock (Come on now, need I explain? He influenced so much in music and that voice man, is what puts him over the top.) - -The Temptations/Gaye/all of Motown- Really any song! (I love their vocals.) - -Stephen Stills: Listen to his solo tracks on CSNY's 4 Way Street (A good strong voice...able to express emotion...good range....there's something that just pulls you in when he sings....when he was sober or not too drunk/not too high.) - -Chris Cornell: His Audioslave work. (A GREAT rock-n-roll singer) - -Layne Staley: His work with Alice in Chains. (Listen to some of their acoustic stuff to really hear the pain in his voice. Powerful vocals.) - -Shirley Manson: Happy Home (Her work with Garbage is good. The main reason I even listen to Garbage is because of her voice.) - -Freddie Mercury: I don't even like Queen but I can't deny this man could let it rip and sing! Come on now. - -Monika ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Dec 2008 17:20:05 -0500 From: merk54@aol.com Subject: Re: Top 10 Singers Okay - I have to weigh in on this.? Terence Trent Darby - Holding on to you Joni Mitchell - The Wolf That Lives in Lindsey Steeleye Span (Maddy Prior) - Cam Ye O'er Frae France Dead Can Dance (Lisa Gerrard) - The Wind The Shakes The Barley Elvis Costello - Live, Front Row, his spit hitting you in the face.? Not a pretty voice, but an amazing singer. Elton John - The Greatest Discovery Bob Dylan - Cold Irons Bound Eva Cassidy - Songbird (Fields of Gold a close second) Pheobe Snow -Teach Me Tonight Cat Stevens - How Can I Tell You Jack - -----Original Message----- From: Monika Bogdanowicz To: Joni people!
