There's many great voices that I could name, and would, at different times. I have two all-time favourites - Billie Holiday, the greatest voice I was born to late to hear live, and Allison Crowe, the greatest voice I've been born in time to hear live. (I enjoy the rare honour of working with my favourite living artist.) Along with another eight voices that ring out in this musing right now be: Allison Crowe - Hallelujah, Secrets Billie Holiday - Don't Explain, I Cover the Waterfront Montserrat Caballe - Un bel di vedremo, O mio babbino caro Edith Piaf - Hymne ` l'amour, Non, je ne regrette rien Nina Simone - For a While, Wild Is the Wind Frank Sinatra - In the Wee Small Hours, Glad to be Unhappy John Lennon - Julia, Jealous Guy Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone, Spanish Harlem Incident Nellie Lutcher - Hurry on Down, He's a Real Gone Guy Charles Aznavour - She, Yesterday When I Was Young (French and English versions) It's wrong to not include Louis Armstrong and others, still, if I go past ten, I may as well shuffle the voices, and come up with 20 or 50, so, I'll stop, and go listen to these and other song tracks ( : best wishes of the season, to all! cheers, Ad ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Dec 2008 22:03:48 +1100 From: Mark-Leon Thorne Subject: Re: Your top 10 singers SJC Well, I guess I'll give this a shot. Of course, I'll have to include the locals. Not many will know them but it's about time they got some exposure. If we're talking purely vocals, it's a different list for songwriters and songs. 1. Joni Mitchell - Blue, The Same Situation, Both Sides, Now (2000), Woman of Heart and Mind, (I could go on). 2. Peggy Van Zalm (with and without her former under-heard and under- appreciated band, Martha's Vineyard) - (with MV) Time Will Fly, Skin On Skin, (without MV), Spiral Dancing, Dirty Water. 3. Missy Higgins - All For Believing, The Special Two. 4. Renee Geyer (legendary Australian Jewish blues singer, has sung backing for Aretha, Barbra, Sting, Cher) - Stares and Whispers, Difficult Woman. 5. Kate Bush (I wouldn't consider that she has a good voice but she has done some magic over the years) - All The Love (The Dreaming), Watching Me Without You (The Hounds of Love/The Ninth Wave), The Man With The Child In His Eyes (The Kick Inside), This Woman's Work (The Sensual World), Aerial, How To Be Invisible, The Coral Room (Aerial). 6. Katie Noonan (classically trained jazz/pop singer, with and without her former bands, george and Elixir) - Special Ones, Breathe In Now (with george), Tip of Memory, Saigon Battle Children 1972 (with Elixir), What's Going On? (with Michael Frante), Bluebird, Sunshine (solo). 7. David Sylvian - When Poets Dreamed of Angels, The Boy With The Gun (Secrets of The Beehive), Exit/Delete (with Takagi Masakatsu), For The Love of Life (with Haishima Kuniaki, Every Colour You Are (with Rain Tree Crow), I Surrender (Dead Bees On a Cake), Before The Bullfight, River Man (Gone To Earth). 8. David Bridie (with and without his former bands Not Drowning, Waving and My Friend The Chocolate Cake) - The Last Great Magician, The Deserters (Act of Free Choice), I've Got a Plan, A Neighbourhood Watch, Sirens (with MFTCC), Perfect Design, The Same Heat (with NDW). 9. Michael McDonald (with and without The Doobie Brothers) - What a Fool Believes (with TDB), I Can Let Go Now, Believe In It (If That's What It Takes), On My Own (with Patti La Belle). 10. Stevie Nicks (with and without Fleetwood Mac) - Beautiful Child, Dreams, Sara, Storms, Sisters of The Moon, Gypsy, That's Alright (with Fleetwood Mac), Beauty and The Beast (one of the most heart wrenching songs I've ever heard), Sable On Blond, Edge of Seventeen, If I Were You. Runners up: 11. Neil Finn. 12. John Farnham. 13. Zoe Johnston. 14. Tracey Thorn. 15. Paul Weller. 16. James Taylor. 17. Shane Howard. 18. Margo Timmins (of Cowboy Junkies). 19. Chris Martin (Coldplay) 20. Tom Jones (most of his song choices suck though). Of course, this is just the list for today. It will look completely different next week. You might have seen a note that she recorded "Woodstock" which came from Joni's ALBUM "Ladies of the Canyon" and thought she recorded the song. I've packaged up a little gift for everyone. Thanks to Bob Muller for the original disc. This is Joni's performance at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles. It was the lead up to Miles of Aisles and features Tom Scott and the L.A. Express. This is an audience recording so, don't expect crystal clear sound. Of course, my real motivation is so I can design a CD cover which you'll find inside one of the folders. It's a double CD so, there are two uploads.
