I like where this track seemed to be going more than where it went, if you see what I mean. The reharmonization is cool, the bass and organ are cool, but the singer never gets out of first gear, and this is a tune where you can really let your "ragged soul take flight". Cassandra Wilson's version is much earthier; Chaka would probably have nailed it too. Of course it's always nice when Hejira tunes get covered, as you say, but damn if they aren't about as perfect as can be on the original album. BTW Let me plug the 2009 JoniFest I am organizing once again. It will be in the gorgeous mountain pine forest of Idyllwild, California from Sept. 24-27th (4 nights) at the Creekstone Inn. Please tell him from me his artwork is full of sensitivity from the soul and there's an artistic bonfire burning in him that is still yet to be revealed. LOVELY and SO DEEP that it brought massive tears to my eyes comparable to Joni's tears on Chris' 'Blue' beautiful work of art. Take care. Bruni-Sarkozy are Joni and Dylan, in that order. a column to the right, in a news story on Elvis Costello hosting a talk show, fawningly describing a oh so hip Costello who knows, just knows, music, has Costello transcended, transfigured, by hearing Herbie Hancock play 'Edith and the Kingpin.' and from the wonderful world of iTunes while strolling for a decent version of O Come O Come Emmaniel I came upon, not the midnight clear, but Sixpence None the Richer and their newly released album which includes River - and based on the 30 second snippet I heard via iTunes, it is my 2nd favorite version of River (my first being Joni's). The entire new SNTR album seems like a great new winter record and only poverty kept me from buying it. I presume Bob the Covers King has SNTR's River already but hope lives eternal I will the first person to introduce him to a new cover just once in my ever fleeting life. I want to give you a chance to make your own list of top 10 singers. I won't say make it the top 10 greatest (in ability) or top 10 favorite (as there can be a difference) just the top 10. Interpret it as you wish. Make the list as you wish. You don't have to put them in order if you can't. I am just curious of your opinion. Also, to justify your choice, pick a song in which that singer displays a spectacular vocal performance and you can even say what about him or her puts them on your list (if you want). For example, if I picked Joni Mitchell (which I would for a top 10), I would pick perhaps "River" (just off the top of my head here) because she exudes such passion, pain, and sadness in her voice that you yourself can feel it. - -Monika ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Dec 2008 14:32:13 +0700 From: do9eatdo9@yahoo.com Subject: RE: Your top 10 singers Oh Monika, i love you. My list. (not in order) 1. Joni Mitchell : Help Me, A Case of You, and Both Sides Now 2000 2. Thom Yorke of Radiohead : How To Disappear Completely from Kid A. His voice really fits the song, which is, in my opinion, suicidal. 3. Bjork : Pagan Poetry from Vespertine. Basically, i agree with what Chris Martin said about her on Rolling Stone magazine. She's so unique. Original. There's no 2nd Bjork in this universe. 4. Chris Martin of Coldplay : Clocks, from A Rush of Blood To The Head. 5. Stevie Nicks : Landslide and from Fleetwood Mac and Gold Dust Woman from Rumour. Her deep dusty textured voice is just great. 6. Bono : Beautiful Day from All That You Can't Leave Behind. 7. Lauryn Hill : Ex Factor from The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill. 8. Carole King : Been To Canaan, So Far Away, Tapestry. Because beauty isn't pronounced bee-yoo-tee. 9. Aretha Franklin : Think and You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman. 10. Michael Jackson : Thriller and Billie Jean. I think I'm gonna add 10 more 11. Elton John : Rocket Man from Honky ChC"teau. This is my most favorite Elton number, but damn, the most difficult one to sing too. 12. Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin : Stairway To Heaven / Rock and Roll from Led Zeppelin IV. 13. Whitney : Saving All My Love For You and I Will Always Have You and I Have Nothing. 14. Christina Aguilera : Beautiful, Fighter, The Voice Within from Stripped. 15. Sarah Vaughan : Misty, When Your Lover Has Gone 16. Freddie Mercury of Queen : Bohemian Rhapsody 17. Sheryl Crow : Riverwide from The Globe Sessions and Steve McQueen from C'mon C'mon. She's a future Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. 18. Billie Holiday : Good Morning Heartache and Strange Fruit. 19. Stevie Wonder : Overjoyed 20. Luciano Pavarotti : Nessun Dorma.
