Joni was in it so SJC Last night on BBC2 there was an incredible documentary "from Byrds to the Eagles" at 10.45 It was awesome with Joni, CSNY, JT, Jacksone Browne, Glen Frey et al on it... Brilliant brilliant brilliant footage set against the down fall of flower power at MOnterey and the growth of singer songwriters on Asylum records Oh just fab. I am trying to see if I can see it again on www.bbc.co.uk as they have a re see facility but my computer it so slow and the settings so way out of whack that I cannot even get the web site to run. If any of you can find it on there - whereever you are in the world if it will let you, then try and see it.. Superb did anyone tape or record it on DVD???? Got to go, lots of people coming for lunch and I have not even started to sort things out Lucy ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Nov 2008 06:55:29 -0800 (PST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Did any one in the UK see? Joni was in it so SJC Suppose one were to go to certain bit-torrent sharing sites, oh, say, like this one here: http://www.mininova.org/tor/1534424 then one might be able to download this thing. Unfortunately, I do not have DVD-burning software and therefore can't share that way, but ... suppose one were to go to that particular website, then it might be possible to get it. But I didn't say that. - --- On Sun, 11/30/08, Lucy Hone wrote: Last night on BBC2 there was an incredible documentary "from Byrds to the Eagles" at 10.45 It was awesome with Joni, CSNY, JT, Jacksone Browne, Glen Frey et al on it... Hi Cassy! Yes, I went to the Herbie Hancock taping, thx to this list. It was engrossing, without a moment of boredom. Elvis has done his homework and for music lovers this will be a series of entertainment and an education in music appreciation. However, in the taping at least, there is a predominance of music - played fresh and live. And Elvis showcases his guests, if this taping is typical of the show. He sets his own ego aside and truly promotes the contributions and unique talents of the invitee. It's on my 'must watch' list. I wanted to thank people for the suggestions on first Joni recordings to pass on. I ultimately decided to recommend the "Dreamland" compilation, then the compilation Starbucks has, along with her Artists Choice compilation. I figure that they are a good overview of most of Joni's catalogue for a rank newbie, at least in my opinion. Back to a snowy Illinois, James O. What is various peoples opinions of it? I think it's great. Some of the best musicians alive playing Joni. What's not to like? Something you should know going in though: it's NOT a tribute album, it's a Herbie Hancock album of Joni's music, including a track each written by her most cited jazz men, Miles Davis and Duke Ellington. Also, the instrumentals don't always follow the vocal line. ie: This is jazz: the composer takes a backseat to musicians. ;) Michael F. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Nov 2008 09:48:40 -0800 (PST) From: Michael Flaherty Subject: Re: series on Sundance channel - Elvis Costello >>>saw the 1st episode of what I think is going to be a great new series on Sundance channel. Its called "Spectacle" or something like that, and features Elvis Costello speaking to, chatting with, playing music with different musical guests. I heard an Elvis interview on NPR today (sorry, I don't know the show--I was in my car). He was promoting the Sundance show. When asked to name his favorite songwriter from the late 60s-early 70s he replied, without hesitation, "Joni Mitchell". :) Not surprising, of course, but I was still glad to hear it. And until further notice, please >banish all traces of Joni Mitchell from your household!) this cracked me up and sent me back to my favorite piece of writing i ever discovered due to the jonimitchell.com: Trouble Child (Joni Mitchell and the History of My Sadness) by clifford chase http://jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=1375 especially this line: ""I can always tell when you're depressed," says my neighbor George, "because I hear Joni through the ceiling." so i read the whole thing again. i still think it's brilliant, with moments of great humor, and i still cried at the end. i'm kind of emotional this weekend anyway, after seeing 'milk', too, especially for the archival footage of san francisco's 1978 gay pride parade. it was my first gay pride; i went in the morning in an incredibly tight pair of jeans, felt young and sexy and alive, then went that afternoon to uc san francisco med center where my mother had started chemotherapy and it was kicking the shit out of her. she died five weeks later. happy thanksgiving weekend everyone, i'm grateful to be alive, when we've lost so many. patrick np - pal joey, original cast album - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org]On Behalf Of Richard Flynn Sent: Sunday, November 30, 2008 12:05 PM To: Joni List Subject: Bad break-up advice SJC http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/30/fashion/30social.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Nov 2008 10:55:48 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: Herbie Hancock Joni tribute cd I like it a bunch, James - unfortunately there are about 4 bonus tracks that aren't included on the CD, but what IS on it is very nice. Michael summed it up pretty well. Plus, it DID win a Grammy for album of the year - that counts for something, right? Some of it is a bit off-putting the first time 'round, but it's a real grower and after a couple of spins it really heats up nicely.
