Great idea. I have been contemplating inviting a special guest(s). I'm trying to be bold. I just can't think of an appropriate Australian who would be known to everyone. You sprung one of my surprises. I had been considering Olivia Newton-John. It wouldn't be much of a hike for her but I'm not sure if she is a Joni fan never having heard her sing one of her songs. I was once invited to June Bronhill's apartment by a mutual friend and had a wonderful casual evening in her gorgeous penthouse. She was very close friends with Joan Sutherland and told me some of the jibes they give each other (which I won't mention here due to good taste). From June's description, Joan seems to have a healthy sense of humour and is pretty down to earth for a diva. I would consider inviting Joan if I had any clue that she likes Joni. Thanks for the suggestion. In fact, there is some more news now.B I have decided to bite the bullet and host it in my house in Greenwich, London.B TheB actual fest date is Saturday 31 January, spilling into Sunday for those who want to visit Greenwich or London a bit more, and we may be able to combine it with a Stryngs house concert on Friday the 30th, but that still needs to be worked out. For those who need accommodation, I have a few spare beds, and will try to sort out the others in a local hotel and hostel.B I am not promising any culinary highstands, we will just keep it easy and practical with simple snacks or take-aways ("take out" food,B in US lingo). We will continue to make all our practical arrangements off line, but I just wanted to mention the event here on the JMDL one more time to make sure that all who want to attend have received the information.B (I hope it is also OK, for this reason, not to put NJC in the heading.B But I will try not to bother our JC friends more than this.) So if anyone wants to attend, contact me privately and I will add you toB our email group. The only rule is: you've got to love Bene, so that's easy! ;-) Big hug to all, Lieve. ________________________________ From: Laura Stanley To: lievereckers@yahoo.co.uk Cc: joni@smoe.org Sent: Wednesday, 26 November, 2008 15:52:59 Subject: Re: NJC London Jonifest, just a small one...? Here's the Lindsay Buckingham cover of BYT, recorded for the "A Case Of You" tribute CD that was never released: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=nCpMne6lWX4 Bob NP: Big Yellow Taxi, "Blue On Blue" (one of my favorite musical moments of 2008; Such a beautiful voice, such a beautiful song) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Nov 2008 13:37:37 EST From: Merk54@aol.com Subject: Re: Lindsay Buckingham - Big Yellow Taxi Bob, Thanks for sending this. I never heard this version and I thought it was great. I loved how he twisted the one line into "a big yellow taxi took away my old band". What a shame this was never released. Does anyone know how to get or make a copy of this? Jack **************Finally, one site has it all: your friends, your email, your favorite sites. Try the NEW AOL.com. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. I myself am avoiding the fact that I'm hosting this shindig and sitting on the computer doing things like this. Ahem. My 12-year-old son Dennis has become a very proficient guitar player, mostly self-taught off guitar books and tabs online, and is interested in Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Metallica, etc. at this point (gets encouragement from my husband in this of course). Dave Blackburn tells me he'll grow out of it (so what's my husband's problem??). So yesteday while puttering around, I noticed a book by his backpack called "Slash." Yes, the autobiography of the guitarist from Guns N Roses. So I pick it up to see what debauchery my innocent little son is reading, and this is what is in the first chapter: (Slash was born in England. His dad is British named Tony Hudson and his mom, Ola, is African American. He moved to Los Angeles when he was about 5) "My mother continued her work as a fashion designer while my father parlayed his natural artistic talent into graphic design. My mom had connections in the music industry so her husband was soon designing album covers. We lived off Laurel Canyon Boulevard in a very sixties community up at the top of Lookout Mountain Road (Joni alarm is sounding). That area of Los Angeles has always been a creative haven because of the bohemian nature of the landscape.. Joni Mitchell lived a few houses down from us . my mom designed Joni's clothes while my dad designed her album covers." "I saw many of Joni Mitchell's recording and rehearsal sessions . " And after I rummage around in my albums, I find Anthony Hudson's name as art designer on Court & Spark. Interesting! Les, can you get an interview with Slash and see what he remembers about her??? (Oh, yeah, and can Dennis get his autograph? ; ) Of course I'm giving Dennis endless grief about this because Joni to him represents the antithesis of the heavy metal he now loves. So I needle him with interviews with Robert Plant saying he's enamored of Joni, show him pictures of Joni and Eric Clapton, and now Slash who grew up down the street from her. Hahaha. One of these days, it will hit him like a lightning bolt. The other night at a local football game, he saw the back of a guy's t-shirt that was for a Neil Young concert tour. He said, "Who's Neil Young?" I said a few things about him and punctuated it by poking him in the arm on each word: and he's a big friend of Joni Mitchell. My evilness knows no bounds. Many good wishes for a lovely day, Lindsay ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Nov 2008 11:09:09 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: Slash & Joni (say what?) You go, Lindsay - you're right, one day Dennis will wake up and say "Wow, I have the coolest Mom with the best musical tastes on the entire planet". All roads lead to Joni, we here on the JMDL know that. That story explains why Slash's autobiography always shows up on ebay when I do a "Joni Mitchell" search. Thanks for the info. For the first time since 1984, I decided to skip the MLA (Modern Language Association) annual meeting. This year it's in San Francisco and there is a panel organized by David Yaffe (who is writing a book on Joni) called "Reckless Daughter: Some Perspectives on Joni Mitchell" with heavy hitters including Eric Lott from whom Dylan approprated the title ""Love and Theft.'" It's Panel 688 on Monday December 29 from 7:15-8:30 in Franciscan Room D of the Hilton San Francisco: 1. "'On the Strings and the Page': Joni Mitchell's Pictorial Imagination," David Yaffe, Claremont McKenna College 2. "Tar Baby and the Great White Wonder; Joni Mitchell and the Mask of Blackness," Eric Williams Lott, University of Virginia 3. "Poetic Register in the Songs of Joni Mitchell," Lloyd Whitesell, McGill University 4. "I Was a Free Man: Joni Mitchell in Guyville," Ann Powers, Los Angeles Times If anyone goes, I'm sure we'd love a report.
