Set in the preceding years, when the Sri Lankan government was undertaking a bloody crackdown of the ultra-Marxist JVP organisation with which de Zoysa was suspected to be allied, this drama is based on interviews with those who knew and worked with him. Directed by Willi Richards. B So this isB not a programme about Joni, but clearly named by someone who's very familiar with Joni's work.B I wondered for a minute if maybe the phrase came from Shakespeare or so, and was thenB used by both Joni and the programme maker independently, but all my googling only took me back to Joni's song. B If anybody wants to listen to the programme, you can go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/ and then "listen live", or afterwards, for about a week,B "listen again".B I wonder if they'll be playing the song in the background of this documentary.B In any case, I will give it a listen, it seems interesting enough. Illegal Smile, Hello in There, Sam Stone, Angel from Montgomery and many more. I find his down to earth folks and songs an interesting contrast/balance to Joni's more rarified visions. I understand Dylan was an immediate fan. It was the theme for the 1954 Elizabeth Taylor movie of the same name, sung by Dinah Shore, and has been covered by Sinatra, Garland, Julie Andrews, etc,,,Written by Hammerstein and Kern, it won an oscar when it appeared in the 1941 film "Lady Be Good", sung by Ann Southern. That clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BmOKL6UQ-I&feature=related So it seems pretty likely that Joni would have heard the song, or at least the title. I don't see much lyrical or musical similarity, but theme-wise, "Richard" is about a darkened spirit, while "Paris" is about a darkened city (following German occupation during WWII). I just watched a story on CNN where a judge punished a young rock group for playing too loud late at night by making them listen to Barry Manilow and (gasp) Joni Mitchell. The two songs? I Can't Smile Without You and Chelsea Morning." Bob M replied "I saw that Joni-story in newsville this morning, Jerry. And I was outraged! I mean, why didn't they use "Dancin' Clown"?" I am trying to get a sense of the sentence and the reaction. True, the reaction by the perps may not have been akin to Brer Rabbit's to the briar patch. However, I suspect that this was some liberal judge trying to rehabilitate the criminals rather than punish them. I realize that for some of us inflicting Barry M does not compute in that vein, but that view is surely not universal. I suspect the judge admires both Barry and Joni. I also suspect the convicts would like Dancin Clown (it's got a beat, and you can dance to it), especially with the Billy Idol spot. So that choice would neither rehabilitate nor punish.
