Singer songwriter albums from early 70s I am so with you on Carly, Mark. The only exception is Come Upstairs. I love it. I'm sure there are so many others but these are the folks who stand out. Kate ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Nov 2008 04:42:12 -0500 From: "Mark Angelo" Subject: SJC: Boy Meets Girl Mid 80's music I was up last night and I had a tune playing in mind...just appeared...from long ago. Anyhow the group - Boy Meets Girl - never was much of a commercial success (often a good indicator) - consisting of two singer/songwriters who found most of their success in writing for other well-known artists, although their own albums deserved more attention. I read up some on their web site and It appears they were married, had a daughter, and are now divorced but remain close friends and still collaborate composing together. The music definitely falls into the "pop" category - however - it blows away all the music glamorizing and glorifying the culture of the slums that has for so long dominated music charts IMHO. For those of you ready to dismiss them as one-hit pop wonders, interestingly Shannon says about her "....first song: one night long ago, on a houseboat in seattle, i dreamed a perfect hippie dream that joni mitchell (my heroine at the time) was sitting on a large rock singing a song to the whole outdoors...i thought "i like that song, it's so beautiful". when i woke up i realized i'd never heard it before, hey, because i wrote it! i was the writer this time....and thus began my writing of song." This video is very uplifting - a nice change from the morose angst-filled music I usually resonate with (okay at least I'm honest about it) with the exception that I sometimes listen to some Christian music as I find much talent in that genre, as well as music that is not mainstream and has a je ne sais quoi - hopeful, uplifting, quality about it - very unlike the sanctimonious, self-serving, lost-in-translation mixture of myths and purported history which comprise the texts of the religion itself. The imagery of these two free-spirited souls who are clearly very much in love with the Southern California sunlight streaming in on them with in an era that seems in retrospect to be more innocent, and hopeful makes me smile. Waiting For A Star To Fall - from their second album Reel Life (my favorite): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5N_gzWKj5lU&feature=related Oh Girl - their first "commercial success" from the self-titled first album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1HYkKssscc&feature=related Their website - with all kinds of info and recent photos - http://www.boymeetsgirlmusic.com/ - -Mark in Florida ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Nov 2008 05:48:28 -0800 From: "Mark Scott" Subject: Re: joan baez, singer/songwriter of the early 1970s - SJC - ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Eoll" > I lose track of her after that album, but I believe some of her > later albums are 100% her. I have not kept up with Joan for a few years now, but I do know that 'Gulf Winds' was penned entirely by her. It has some beautiful songs on it. I just watched a story on CNN where a judge punished a young rock group for playing too loud late at night by making them listen to Barry Manilow and (gasp) Joni Mitchell. The two songs? I Can't Smile Without You and Chelsea Morning. Maybe, just maybe, those young rockers had some sense in their head and when they heard Joni, something clicked? What is the chance? I wish that was my punishment when I played in a rock band. I played in a band a few years back in my garage and a neighbor constantly called the police. We had to take it inside the house..... - -M - --- On Tue, 11/25/08, Jerry Notaro wrote: A great injustice has been perpetrated in Joni-land. I'm no fanilow, but a morning of listening to Karen, Joni, and Dolly would be pretty normal in my house. I wonder if they judge might force me to listen to rap??
