Two of the initial 60 being issued are New York Tendaberry and Kind of Blue. On December 10, Warner Music Japan is also releasing Blue on SHM-CD: The high quality SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) format features enhanced audio quality through the use of a special polycarbonate plastic. Using a process developed by JVC and Universal Music Japan discovered through the joint companies' research into LCD display manufacturing, SHM-CDs feature improved transparency on the data side of the disc, allowing for more accurate reading of CD data by the CD player laser head. SHM-CD format CDs are fully compatible with standard CD players. 'Farmer's Market' and 'Dry Cleaner' are both showcases of a style called vocalese. The same thing with 'The Old Supermarket from Old Peking'. Joni has the vocal dexterity to sing rapid-fire song lyrics, although I am not sure if she is still adept at this type. A friend (a casual Joni listener) once told me that Joni seems intent on fitting her lyrics to a melody. She thinks it comes out clunky sometimes. I don't know if I agree although one thing I noticed when other people cover Joni's songs, they should have the range and vocal heft to sing all the lyrics while having to cascade their voices to the range-y vocal demands of the song. Case in point: actress/singer Zooey Deschannel of She & Him fame. When she sang 'You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio' live, she cannot seem to have her voice trace the contours of the song, maybe because she is singing it in Joni's key. Even k.d. lang said that singing 'Help Me' is a b*tch to sing. I think vocal Joni covers should find singers interpreting songs in their style, in their key to being out their interpretive skills to the fore. After all if they sing like Joni, it is like a bad simulacra. I mentally follow their songs with Joni's voice in mind. It is true that you 'hear' certain things that you haven't heard when you listen to it with more concentration (and maybe the wisdom of years). It is a symphonic piece where voice (Joni's) is one of the soloists. I like the long interlude (second movement?) in the middle of the song that describes in my mind the barren landscape of Paprika Plains. Then Joni's voice comes in to sing: "The rain retreats/ Like troops to fall on other fields and streets". The way her voice came on really seems to transition the second movement to a beautiful third movement. I liken this piece to the Style Council's "The Gardener of Eden" from their sublime "Confessions of a Pop Group" album in the mid-80s. Also Kate Bush's "Aerial" album that places pop song conventions in a symphonic/classical setting. I hope you will enjoy the posts and chime right in. Although you'll see that we are a group of people with complex personalities and extensive connection to music, Joni unites us. Joni has played a major, major, major part in my life since 1967-68. I'm quite sure I'm addicted to her music, her lyrics, his wisdom, her voice, ...everything. I've had the unbelievable luck of seeing Joni perform several times. She is a magnificent soul who shares her inner-most feelings unabashedly with all who listen. She predicts our aspects of our future with acute accuracy. Her music and lyrics allow us to translate her experiences and thoughts into our own experiences. Personally, I drift from early albums to more current Cd's without knowing consciously what my purpose is...yet there always is a reason and discovering the 'why' is revealing and exciting. Music is a major part of my life...always has been as my mother told me at age 2 I would stay in my bedroom for hours playing the same songs over and over again on this little record player. I'd dance and sing and my mother could hear me so this left her with a lot of time for herself because she knew I was safe. I listen to Joni everyday...it's like a fix for me. I'm also really into Kate Bennett's "Over the Moon". Kate is a regular JMDL contributor. I still haven't been able to translate my emotions while listening and then reflecting on her music into a cogent paragraph, although I'm getting closer. I love Jonatha Brook..remember when she was one of the two musicians who were "The Story"? I enjoy India Arie, Craig David, Suzanne Vega's earlier works, Bonnie Raitt, Dory Previn Steely Dan...and Pink! I also love jazz . Gee, my list could continue forever. The people in our "family" are intense in feelings, profound in thought, and feel that this is a safe community to express deep emotion, reactions to major events in our world...and there are many of us that share intense support for one another on and off-list. Michael, let me know next time you do a gig in Urbana. I'll take you for coffee at the Starbucks near my apartment. If you all go to YouTube and type in Listen Up Illinois Volume 6, I'm playing autoharp and guitar on the far left and play a couple of lead breaks. Sound not best in the world but thought would tell people about it. Best for now James O. We make you welcome in Hana (19 times round the seasons) and James (33 times round the seasons)! Hope I got that right...I'm always running behind the times, JLTT, because I'm on digest. (No comment from Muller's peanut gallery, please!) (TIC! When I first saw your gallery...) I've had Joni in my blood like holy wine since a friend gave me the just-released STAS when I was 14. (Since I was seventeen minus three, I've Joni over me!) ; ) As another James sings: "I'm wondering where I'd be with you (Joni) in my life..." Looking forward to more conversation with you, Patti P., glad that is it almost the weekend ("everybody's workin' for the weekend"....bring it ON!) P.S. Catherine, loved your description of the poppies popping up ("like blood-red fingernails", was my first Joni thought) at Flanders Field. I never knew that. I'm looking forward to hearing from Lieve and Anita about that whole experience. P.P.S. Kenny B, loved your chattin' up Joni at the bank on her birthday, when you wrote the date. I did the same thing all day on Nov. 7th whenever I had to sign and date something at work. "Did you know that today is Joni Mitchell's birthday?" Most co-workers just shook their heads and laughed (or rolled their eyes)...the people who did not know Joni got a little Joni education. Vivent les Jonievangelistas, chicken-scratching for her immortality! _________________________________________________________________ Color coding for safety: Windows Live Hotmail alerts you to suspicious email. http://windowslive.com/Explore/Hotmail?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_hotmail_acq_safety_1 12008 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Nov 2008 04:57:36 +0000 From: Patti Parlette Subject: Joni geography Notre ami Bonneville Bruce in Sunnyslope, Idaho wrote to our new Hana: P.S. Good luck with your studies, there is plenty of room for the Joniphile geographer out there in the big world. **** The Joni question is: Have you got maps From two dozen states? Have you gone coast to coast just to contemplate? xo, pp P.S. to BB: The new Wally Lamb novel mentions Astral Weeks. Alors, je pense a toi. And you know, there may be more interesting musical mentions... I've only flipped through it, just at this moment of the world. I haven't seen any Joni mentions, but in his talk Tuesday night, he had a Joni quote! Wally has a little JMOCD, too. More later, when time and good fortune allows.
