I don't know her personally and it just seems weird to me to add her just because I'm a fan of her mother's. In some ways, I wish Facebook wouldn't do stuff like that. On the other hand, it has made me aware of more jmdlers that are on and I've added them, but many of you I've met in person or, if not, feel I "know" you (inasmuch as it's really possible to know someone from posts they make to the jmdl). Somehow, it just seems a bit stalkerish to me. And I'm not passing judgement on anyone who might have added her to their list of "friends,"so please don't anyone take it that way. I guess we all deal with that in different ways. Now that I think of it, there are one or two people on my "friends" list that I don't know at all, but who asked me to be their friend because they're someone else's friend and every now and then I wonder what the point of all that is. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Nov 2008 08:22:45 -0800 (PST) From: Mags Subject: incredible little green live 1967 Mark wrote: I'm not sure anyone has posted this to the list before but I don't remember seeing it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AATdTSUfjk&NR=1 Mark! what a fantastic find!! A lot of "friends" will just be interested in her because she is "the" Kilauren. Everybody associated with Joni Mitchell something gets the suggestion to invite her as a friend. She must have hundreds of invitations to handle. - The comments on youtube are mainly about Joni's motives for giving Kilauren up for adoption, not really about Kilauren at all. So that means Marlin must be 12 or 13 or so by now? I guess he doesn't look like the one-digit-something he did all those years ago either. And even if she doesn't look like the pictures we've seen, there's a whole lot on the comments on the youtube page that point to her really being Kilauren. It's funny how people react to the singing. She definitely doesn't sing like Joni, but the style in which that song is performed is quite different and I think it's a pretty good performance all in all. She's not singing pretty. I wouldn't call it punk, but it's something veering in that direction and I quite liked it. __________________________________________________________________ Yahoo! Along with that, of course, millions of strangers might happen to see it as well, but it all depends on the individual's reason for putting this stuff out there. >Finding her mother must have turned out to > be a mixed > blessing for Kilauren. > I would think so. It's probably difficult being related to anyone famous, because people expect you to be like your father, mother, sister, brother, whatever. If you're a lot like them, they think you're copying. If you're not at all like them, then you have no talent. And then again, if you go into the same or similar business, you might have doubts about whether you make it as yourself or as the child of whomever. Iron Eyes Cody was, of course, not Native American, but of Italian descent-this is widely known, even though he perpetuated this myth until his death. http://www.snopes.com/movies/actors/ironeyes.asp Ditto to the "Chief Seattle speech" on the white man's destruction of the environment, which has been (pretty) conclusively demonstrated to be a reporter's fabrication. http://www.runran.net/blog/seattle.html (it was reprinted in the booklet for the "Beginnings of Survival" compilation CD). Joni alludes to it's questionable authenticity in her speech to the Commonwealth Club made in San Francisco. You can do a search of the jmdl archives to find more in-depth discussions of these points, and references. I do not in any way question Joni's sincerity in bringing up the topics of our relationship to the earth. Her Native American cred, however, seems more inspirational than informed. OK, as promised here is the next NEW installment of covers, sorry for the delay but then again no one was really protesting about it, and those of who you have been keeping up since day one have enough Joni covers to keep you tied over. And I hope you think that the collection is worth the wait; there are lots of really nice recordings on this one so let's get right to it. Thanks to Cassy, Paul, Mark-Leon, and Jenny for their help with this one. The download is here: http://tinyurl.com/59mnh7 And here's what's on it: 1. Herbie Hancock with Sonya Kitchell - All I Want: This one was recorded for Herbie's Grammy-winning album but was not finished in time so it was made available as an Amazon-only bonus track. And it's an excellent addition to the album; Sonya's confident jazz chops are way beyond her young years and Herbie and his band of course offer up a wonderful wall of sound behind her. I just love the way she's not intimidated by anything here and just cuts loose to make this one her own. 2. Burkhard Wolters - Both Sides Now: The first of two very fine instrumental acoustic guitar versions of the franchise, this one reminds me a bit of the older Davey Graham take. Lots of shimmering runs make it almost sound like there's a harpist in the background. 3. Imani - Blue Motel Room: Hailing from my State of SC, jazz percussionist/vocalist Imani brings a fine laid-back Cassandra Wilson feel to one of Joni's finest jazz ballads. 4. Donna Griffin - The Circle Game: I can't tell you much about Donna but I CAN tell you that her CD from 2000 with this Joni cover on it was dang hard to find. But like a good mountie, I was able to track it down and now am happy to offer it up to you. As for her take on TCG, it's pretty basic - nothing remarkable but nothing too terrible either. 5. Shanley Wang - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: An up and coming jazz artist from the West Coast, this 2007 recording features some strings and some other odd jazzy colors as well. Also worth noting that lyrically she just does the first verse that Joni wrote - twice. 6. Laura Luca - Mani Su Di Me (Morning Margantown): Another one to add to the list of foreign-language covers, this time around it's an Italian cover of Morning Morgantown from 1979, and it's very pretty too. 7. Frank Shofner featuring Samanth Newark - Both Sides Now (Radio Edit): I featured the full-length take on this one on an earlier volume. Why they thought it would justify a radio edit I'm not sure as this is a dated slab of techno-disco that belongs 2 or 3 decades before the year of 2006 when it was recorded. 8. Jenny Goodspeed - The Arrangement: The first cover of this LOTC track is a stunner indeed, courtesy of our own Jenny Goodspeed. An excellent updated arrangement (so to speak), Jenny's voice is a great combination of poignant and powerful, and the guitars are stinging. If you don't have her CD yet, it's not too late. 9. Marian Call - Chelsea Morning: This one is WAY cool, LA-area singer-songwriter Marian just reinvents the song for the most part and I love the freshness she brings to it, even tossing in a sesame street reference - just for you Barbara! 10. Liz Carlisle - The Circle Game: 11. Liz Carlisle - Both Sides Now: Originally from Montana, Liz made her name performing while in school in the Boston area. She brings a little bit of a simple country sound to these two Joni standards, and indeed this 2007 release was recorded in Nashville and Liz has opened for some of country's biggest and brightest stars. 12. Dawn Langstroth - A Case Of You: You may not know Dawn but you surely know her Mom, one Anne Murray (who has recorded BSN a long time ago) and as her Dad is also a musician it was inevitable that the gene pool would trickle down and indeed it did. Dawn's voice is just beautiful and like her Mom she puts a little country spin on her vocal. This one should be a good crowd-pleaser. 13. Lola Youngman - Twisted: These cats are from my old stomping grounds of Raleigh, NC. They swing the standard pretty good, but they fail to bring anything new to it other than a nice soprano sax solo during the break. 14. Andrea Burns - Chelsea Morning: Andrea is an NYC cabaret and stage performer, and she brings that sensibility to this cover, with very clear punchy tones and enunciation, I expect her to break into a medley of this one and "Oh What A Beautiful Morning". 15. Ulli Boegershausen - Both Sides Now: A very pretty solo acoustic instrumental from German guitarist Ulli Boegershausen. Settles very easily on the ear. Reminds me of driving through the country. 16. Little Gas - Big Yellow Taxi: 17. Little Gas - Morning Morgantown - The guitars are pretty solid; the vocals not so much. 18. Bill and Susan Weiske - The Circle Game: His and hers cheese. All that's missing is the Lawrence Welk backdrop. 19. Paula Marchesini - All I Want: Don't know much about Paula, she put this on YouTube and I thought it was worth grabbing and sharing. An interesting arrangement with some funky percussion and sounds, and she nails the vocal just fine. 20. Alfred Hause and His Orchestra - Both Sides Now: There's a minor bit of cheesiness to this one, and it does date back to 1972, but I like it all the same because of that "Midnight Cowboy" harmonica sound that kicks it off. OK, so that's #106 - Covers you can believe in. And can I come back in December and kick off another one...yes, I can!
