I have created a new group on Facebook especially for JoniFests. If you have a profile on Facebook, you probably already received an invitation from me. If not, search the groups for JoniFest. I created it for people to discuss upcoming JoniFests and past ones too. It's actually having the effect of drawing in more Joni fans too. If you don't already have a profile on Facebook, I highly recommend it. It's a wonderful way to waste your time. I will use the group to post new information on OzFest 2010 and any information Dave gives me about SoCalFest 2009. Mark in Sydney PS Congratulations to those who voted for Barack Obama - the 44th United States President. We are all pretty excited in Australia about it. The final stages and Barack's speech was carried live on the Nine Network in Australia. Such emotion. It was wonderful. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Nov 2008 11:07:25 +0000 From: Michel BYRNE Subject: Commercials - Urge for Going Monika!!!!! I will NEVER be able to listen to Urge for Going in the same way again! Childish, maybe, but very very funny! :)) We've left the Blue discussion behind, I know, but if I can just add my tuppence worth. Like Bob, I can't say I was ever hugely affected by Blue, though I can see it's a very strong album. My first encounter with Joni's music was 'For the Roses' which my older sister was totally into, and though I mostly enjoyed the earlier albums when I found my way to them, none of them for me came close to FTR. C&S was gorgeous but almost too slick, and it was Hissing and Hejira especially that really got their hooks into me and have stayed with me for life. I'm still a bit bemused by the popularity of Blue, but although Joni seems to be a bit cynical about it ('It's only seen as my best because it sold most', or that kind of thing), I think that kind of popular acclaim has to be respected. If Blue can still speak to so many people 30 years later, it must be great art. But not an album I would put in her top three. Different strokes... Congratulations to you all in Good ol' God Save America, by the way. A historic day! Access to it was available in yesterday's Online Journal - if it is not still accessible there today, I'm sure I could send a copy to the right person. It is a glowing tribute to her career on the occasion of her 65th birthday (the author, Jim Fusilli, the Journal's rock and pop music critic, admits "As a milestone, reaching that age doesn't mean what it once did, but any opportunity to celebrate Ms. Mitchell and her work is worth seizing"). I would highly recommend 2-sided printing if you print a copy as it is 9 pages long!! On top of that, he inherits with the carcass of a country that has been gutted by a mercenary corporate/government culture that can happily retreat to their mansions and tabulate the largest upward transfer of wealth in human history.
