I'd like to thank everyone who gave me feedback about OzFest. This has really helped me to shape it. It seems that organising it back to back with SoCalFest is not the best way to go. It seems some people may find the time for both hard to come by. So, I've decided to push it back to March, 2010. From memory, March is still pretty hot in southeastern Australia. Autumn doesn't really kick in until the end of March, April. My birthday FYI is March 6, so that's how I remember. Unfortunately, this doesn't fit in with Michael Paz but I just have to service as many needs as possible. Michael, I do hope you can find a way to make it in March as well. I am looking at mid March at this stage. Those of you who would like to attend the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, the parade and party are on the first weekend of March but if you want to attend the entire festival, you'll need to come in February. I can now reveal to you the venue for JoniFest Down Under. http:// www.kangaroovalleybushretreat.com.au/ Kangaroo Valley Bush Retreat is a 100 acre retreat at the southeastern corner of the Southern Highlands region of New South Wales. It is at the foot of the mountains and about a ten minutes drive from the coast and beaches. It is at the edge of national park with beautiful waterfalls nearby and pristine bushland. Kangaroo Valley is a tiny historical town and nearby Berry is the quaintest little village you could imagine. There are many alternative lifestylers living in the area and Berry even has a native American craft store of all things. The retreat also has an outdoor cathedral that they say would be perfect for jam sessions/performances. The retreat itself has a lodge that sleeps 24 people with a large communal area and huge kitchen. There are also 8 cabins with various configurations. These are self contained. The choice is your as the price doesn't vary depending on which you choose. They offer self catering or a meal package that is quite reasonable. The price is good too. I enquired about the price for 30 people but it turns out to be one packages price for the entire retreat. AU $13,500 for three days. They can accommodate up to 68 people. That equates to under US$100 per person per night. About US$84 at the current exchange rate. The menu supplied is AU$59 per person per day. At a guess, that would be about US$40. The thing is, it's the same price whether there are 30 people or 2 people. That's for the retreat. The individual price is based on 30 people. The less people, the more expensive. Here's a breakdown of the price: Accommodation (Per person, per day) Meals (Per person, per day) AU: $150 AU: $59 US: $84.60 US: $40.39 UK: #61.95 UK: #24.37 EU: 77.95 EU: 30.66 CA: $122.51 CA: $48.19 The caterer can accommodate varying diets to a degree with advanced notice. They tell me their ingredients are all local and fresh. This is beautiful lush farmland. Dairy country mostly. What I really need now is a general show of hands Even if you're not sure, please let me know if there is a chance you can make it because the number of people will dictate the price for each of us. I need to know if we can get 30 people to keep it at the price above. I will keep you all informed each step of the way and I happy to answer any questions you might have including travel information. Thank you all for your cooperation. Mark in Sydney ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Oct 2008 09:47:21 +0100 From: "Marion Leffler" Subject: OZ fest 2010 Mark, thank you for your efforts! The place you have chosen looks absolutely perfect! And the prices seem reasonable. So provided the current financial crisis in Europe and elsewhere doesn't wipe out my savings you can count on me! Actually, March 2010 is even better for me than October 2009, it gives me a little more time to plan and save. And since I have one of those significant birthdays in December 2009, I could ask people to contribute towards making my dream of going to Australia come true instead of giving me other presents. I really, truly want to make the trip, and combined with a Jonifest, it would just have to be one of the highlights of my life! Marion ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Oct 2008 21:04:32 +1100 From: Mark-Leon Thorne Subject: Re: OZ fest 2010 Oh Marion, what a special trip this will be for you. Of course, I am going all out for this. This will be a once in a lifetime experience for me too so, I intend to make this the best JoniFest in history and one that everyone will remember for the rest of their lives. It may be a long, long time before JoniFest comes to Australia again so, I'm pulling out all the stops. Short of having Joni, herself there. You can rest assured that everyone who attends will be well catered for. Every comfort covered. I will be host, tour guide and general servant during the event. I know the effort will be well worth it when I see everyone having the best time ever. I hope March fits in with everyone. If there is a problem with March, please let me know. I want to find the best time for everyone. Isn't that place something? Although I haven't been there, I know the Kangaroo Valley area and it is just gorgeous. It's about 2 - 3 hours drive from Sydney to the south. Nearby is Fitzroy Falls and several other waterfalls, rainforest, beaches and rivers. The place even allows you to catch your own fish in the river. I got a quote by e- mail but then I called them. The woman loves the idea of JoniFest and hinted at a possible further reduction in price. I will be looking into some surprises too. My sister has some high level musical friends and I want her to call in some favours. If you've ever considered a trip to Australia, this is the time. Come one, come all. I'm hoping our New Zealand cousins can pop over for it - - Hell, put down that cow's udder and pack your bags. Of course, I realise it is a much further journey for Europeans and also more expensive but I hope you all see this the way Marion does - a trip of a lifetime. Danilo? Oddmund? Adriano and Licia? Christina and Henning? Bene? (you can save by then). The Brits. We've been invading your country for so long now, come to the antipodes and see what all the fuss is about. Jamie? Lucy? Lieve? Garrett? Chris? I am going to try my hand at making a web site for the occasion. It will be a registration page to enter your details for booking purposes and I will put up links to the retreat, transport, PayPal account and general travel info. 30% needs to be paid but not until about 6 months beforehand. At the time (1974), I thought the silhouetted figure on my photograph was a result of sloppy processing...perhaps an overlapped negative. You've been doing your sums, m'lady. Yes, the big cost was always going to be the flights. It's a fine line between finding accommodations that are suitable and what everyone would like and keeping the price down. The retreat is a good compromise in my opinion. It's not the cheapest place in the country but it's not the worst either. I did quite a bit of research before stumbling upon this place and, my, my, my, there are some expensive places around. Upwards of $200/night. The others were either golf resorts or historic properties. I searched two main areas - the Southern Highlands to the south and Barrington Tops to the north. This was by far the best deal and most appropriate layout. Keep in mind the exchange rate. That's why I've calculated the price in different currencies. That's based on the current exchange rate of course and who knows what it will be by that time? In July of this year, AU$1.00 was buying US$0.91. Now, it is about AU$1.00 = US$0.61. Americans would make a killing if they were to travel here today but, as I said, who knows what it will be come March 2010. The prices I have quoted are based on 30 people at the retreat for 3 days. I just picked 3 days because that is how long Holycombe went for. I guess, if people want the place for longer, you could assume the same price for an extra night. Keep in mind that this price is also for booking out the entire retreat. They are not really like a hotel. They don't do individual rates. That's why there is no difference in price whether you take a cabin or a bunk bed in the lodge. They have just quoted me the price for the whole three days and for the entire retreat. They do not charge individual prices. If people think that might be unfair, I can recalculate the price and charge varying amounts, depending on their choice of sleeping arrangements. Let me know if you would prefer this. I did not know you could fly directly from Seattle to Sydney. I do know that you can fly direct out of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Vancouver. Most airlines have deals with US domestic airlines that charge one price for a connection to those cities. If you're flying from Europe, I recommend one of the cheaper airlines that fly via Asian. Like Thai Airlines, Cathay Pacific (via Hong Kong) or Malaysian Airlines. My sister actually owns several town houses up the coast a little bit that she rents out to holiday makers. There are five in total. I can enquire into her prices if anyone would like. They are in an area called, Lake Illawarra (get out your atlases) quite close to the beach and about an hour drive from Sydney. Kangaroo Valley is about 2 hours drive further south. There are other cheap alternatives and I am happy to make enquiries into further accommodation if anyone would like. I am an impatient person by nature. Especially when I am excited about something. I would like this to happen next month but I realise that's not possible. I was trying to work out when is the ideal weather for this. I personally find the heat quite stifling and prefer colder weather but this is not to please me. I want to cater to everyone's needs and most people like warmer weather. I figured Spring is a compromise. Spring this year has been a bit shitty so far. A lot of cloud cover, raining intermittently and wildly fluctuating temperatures (one week there's a heatwave - 35: and the next, there's snow in the upper areas). Some people are good at a general perspective of general weather trends but my memory is shot. My birthday is in March and I do recall that it still terribly hot in this region until the end of March. April is not good because I know it is traditionally a windy and wet month. Besides, I couldn't wait a whole two years for this. Whichever date I choose is not going to fit in with everyone. I can only hope to accommodate as many people as possible. I'm not sure when the school vacation times fall for the USA. I don't even know when they are here, I don't have kids. The date is still negotiable so, Mona Fitzgerald, put in your bid. I won't need to actually book for quite some time yet. They don't require a deposit until one month beforehand either. That gives everyone lots of time to save money. As far as the economy goes, the Australian dollar is quite low right now but seems to be climbing slowly up again. Generally, our economy is weathering this current crisis nicely. Bank bailouts have not been necessary so far and interest rates are falling like never before. Food prices aren't too bad. It's imports that are going through the roof. I asked my brother last night if he would like to come to this and he said, "Not at that price". Then again, he is used to camping. Short of making this a camping fest, I don't think I could get a better price. To get any cheaper, I would have to forego the facilities that this place offers. We'd be looking at hostel type accommodation. Yes, $500 looks like a lot of money but that is for accommodation and food for four days. It seems that this price is pretty close to what Holycombe charged too. Because the flights will be a major consideration for most people, I have suggested that you turn this into a major holiday and continue on after the fest to explore the country while you're here. I can help with various types of holidays if you like. Tell me what you're interested in and I can research it for you. Whether it's scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef or an Outback adventure to Ayres Rock and Kings Canyon or wine tasting in the Barossa Valley or a shopping spree in Sydney. I know this country pretty well including other cities besides Sydney. Canberra is a fairly short drive from Kangaroo Valley. Hiring a car for your stay is probably wise. That will give you much more freedom but it's not absolutely necessary. I have been looking into transport for everyone to the venue. There is a train from Sydney to Berry (takes about an hour). Then we will have to arrange some sort of pick up from there. I think this is the easiest way to get there although, I should point out that the owner of Kangaroo Valley Bush Retreat has suggested a bus that runs from Parramatta in Sydney. I don't favour this option, myself because you would have to get to Parramatta first and it's a private bus company. The only advantage is that it goes to Kangaroo Valley township instead of Berry. You can get the train directly from Kingsford-Smith Airport to Central Station and just change trains to Berry. Easy. Thanks for your input, Michael. The economy is a conundrum. On the one hand, I hope the economy doesn't improve by then because it might keep the AU$ down and keep it affordable for everyone. On the other hand, if it improves, it will make your day to day lives easier and make it easier to save. I do hope you can make it. It would be such a highlight to have you there. As I said, I'm happy to research and other activities you have in mind. I'm also willing to look into possible professional bookings for you. Some pub gigs in Sydney for example or one of the many music festivals. Jimmy, please think about coming a bit earlier for the Mardi Gras. I'd be happy to put you up at my house although, I could only offer you the living room floor. At least it would be free. Craig, I'm so pleased you and Laura can make it. Laura's brother is more than welcome. Come one, come all, I say. Joni fans or not (you soon will be). The more people that come, the cheaper it gets for everyone. The venue has capacity for 68 people. The prices I quoted are based on 30 people so it is not the final breakdown. If we can get more than 30 people, the individual price will drop. Keep that in mind. Thank you all for your feedback. It's a big help to me to know what's going on and what you all need. Mark in Sydney PS As I mentioned, I am working on a new web site where you will be able to register for the fest and find links for payment and other information. I've never designed a web site before so it may take some time to get up and running. On 31/10/2008, at 4:58 AM, Cassy wrote: > As others have said, this could be the trip of a lifetime.
