But the best kick-ass concerts ribbons for me go to Warren Zevon. Around April of 2000, I saw him the Theatre Of The Living Arts in Philadelphia. A couple of nights later at a New Jersey beer joint called Club Bene. A couple of nights later in Austin at La Zona Rosa and another night later at the beautiful downtown Jones Park in Houston. I wanted to attend two more, in Ft. Worth and then Seattle, but was already beaten to a beautiful pulp by Warren getting down solo, that I couldn't take it anymore--he truly rubbed me raw with his music. Warren was excellent! I still can't get the hang of copying the download links into my posts properly. Maybe it's a Mac thing but they come out all wonky. If anyone would like the covers, just write to me off list. The file is only 6.8MB so, I can easily just send it by e-mail. The file is a .zip file. A folder containing four sub folder with the front and back covers and disc images for each CD. Joni in 1972 with Jackson Brown opening - my first time seeing her ... Blue tour - Opened with "This Flight Tonight" 2.) Annie Lennox about 5 years ago - what an entertainer and how she changed the mood with every scene or song change 3.) CSN&Y back in 1974? The show was about 3 hours long and their opening act was Jessie Colin Young. 4.) Indigo Girls - any show - I am not so enamored with them or their music alone - but the whole experience, audience and artists, is so full for me 5.) Phoebe Snow - I can't date the concert - but I have seen Phoebe more than anyone else(10x) - only because Joni doesn't tour as much as Phoebe used to ... But the best of Phoebe was the first time she did "At Last" live - I remember just freezing as I was up getting a drink at the Park West/Chicago and running back tomy seat in awe after the first note! Honorable mention Ricki Lee Jones the first tour in 1979 & my conversation with her afterwards ... Elton John late 70's as well - you have to see him once ... The Pretenders/Chrissie! Back in 2000 right up against the stage but able to dodge all the cups of beer she kicked out of her way! And you know there may be more ... Elton John on the "Don't Shoot Me" tour. (mid 70's) DANG that was rockin'! That was his first tour with glitter involved, I think. He sure had a great band. Also I'm recalling a flabbergasting Joan Armatrading show in Germany in the late 70's. Everybody left with slobber all down their shirts and bottom lip dragging the floor. HOSL was the recording that really turned me on to Joni. It was also Melody Maker's album of the year (MM was in it's time the leading serious musical publication in the UK). Rian ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Oct 2008 20:56:38 -0700 (PDT) From: Rob Wh Subject: best live concert ever For me, in the broad range of non-classical categories, my answer is the same now as it was almost thirty years ago: Joni Mitchell with Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker, Jaco Pastorious, Lyle Mays, Don Alias (and of course the Persuasions); very early September, 1979, in Vancouver, B.C. at the Pacific Coliseum. I had just moved to the city and was about to start my undergrad as a music major. What an introduction!! Had no idea that this was part of the "Shadows and Light" phenomenon - quite understandably I thought of this as the "Mingus" tour. No matter how my feelings for Joni Mitchell may have evolved over the years - and may continue to evolve - that concert is and always will be a high point of my life. Second place might be shared amongst: Joan Baez (December 1977 in London at the Hammersmith Odeon; just Joan, her guitar, and us); Joan Armatrading (July 1980, again in Vancouver, this time at the Queen Elizabeth, a theater that might still be a perfect venue for JM); Jimmy Webb (October 1999, somewhere in Boston, with fellow JMDLers Patrick, Ashara, Chuck and Barbara); Intimate Nights (June 2006 in New York City at Joe's Pub; the great night when Patrick Leader, my sister and I got to experience Blossom Dearie live). Also my first live Ella Fitzgerald experience was awesome (the second was a bit scat-by-numbers, but it was the late show ...) Cheers to all! It has come to my attention that Chris Marshall did the majority of recordings at Holycombe. I felt the need to adjust the CD covers I designed to reflect that. I also updated the layout slightly. Thank you so much Chris for recording these and making it possible for us to share in that event. I still think you're damned good singer and musician too. I also love Dave's mixing. Instead of farting around with yousendit, just send me a request offlist and I will e-mail the covers to you. The file is only 7.2MB so, quite easy to send that way. If anyone has some severe e-mail restrictions and would prefer to download it from the web, send me a message and I will upload it for you.
