I finally managed to download Dave's recordings from UK JoniFest (whew! almost 1GB) and I'd like to share my impressions and a small gift to you all. Henning and Christina, what an amazing treat it must have been to have you there and for me now to actually hear your incredible talents. Henning's musical ability astound me and Christina, you seem to be able to handle Joni's most difficult vocal tracks with ease. What an absolute delight you are to listen to. I mean, Woodstock for goodness sake. I love your passion for Joni's unreleased songs too. How much fun was Dr Junk? Loved your bluesy sound on Day After Day. Patrick Leader, you are so much fun. To be honest, the voice is not easy on the ears but I listen to you over and over to be inspired by your enthusiasm. Thank you so much for Mirrorball too. That was a treat to hear. I have to say, I was completely blown away by Barry Cahill. You are a friggin genius, man. I could listen to you day and night. I'm sorry if I haven't been paying attention but, I hadn't heard your name mentioned until I heard this stuff and I want to know if you have recorded professionally. How do I join the Barry Cahill list? I'm a fan. The flute and saxophone is just sublime. Beautiful. Delene, likewise. What a voice. So strong and commanding. I don't even know most of the songs you performed. Are any of those your originals? Just gorgeous. Jeff Hankins, I could listen to you all day too. Was that a dulcimer you were playing? Nice voice too. What can you say about Robin and Dave? Robin's voice is of a seasoned professional. So strong and full of unique and warm tones. You have an amazing instinct for music that I have only heard in Joni herself. You know this stuff like the back of your hand. What a match you make with Dave. Dave Blackburn is such an inspiration to me. He is like some Buddhist master to me. I want to sit at his feet and hang on his every word and learn everything I can. Dave you could carry the worst singer and make them sound great. You are a master at the desk too. The production work you have done just blows me away. These recording, for example, are of such high quality, it should be in the stores. Anita, you blew me away too. Gorgeous guitar playing and your voice is so warm and comforting. You come across to me as a storyteller. You were so lucky (or smart) to have acquired that guitar. What a treasure to possess. Something to bind your love for Steph. Beautiful story. Laurent, I never knew you had such a great singing voice. Very strong. Nice tones. Mr Muller. You're more than just a hottie to me now. You can sing too. Wow! The whole package. I love your depth of knowledge about music. I love your enthusiasm too. Oddmund, how gorgeous you are. I'm so glad you gave it a go and got into the spirit. Glad to know you wrrrrrecked your stockings. I sincerely hope this is not the last time I hear you put yourself out there. Les Ross, you made me fall back on cloud nine. I drifted off somewhere very nice, listening to you. The relaxed tone of your voice is just dreamy. You need to record professionally too if you haven't already. Adriano and Licia, you guys brought a big smile to my face. It was a wonderful experience listening to both of you. I must say, I prefer to hear you in Italian. Lucy, you gorgeous woman. You were responsible for bringing all this together. No mean feat. I must have a little conversation with you. I thoroughly enjoyed those English folk songs. Where did you pull those from? Just beautiful. Simple melodies with stories that draw you in. I was definitely drawn in. Thank you for those gems. I will treasure them. Donna Binkley, thank you so much for performing Blood and Fire. I adore that song. Your voice is so unique which suited that song. You sung it with such emotion. You gave me the same feelings as Emily and Amy did when I first heard it. Chris Marshall, I need to know if you've recorded professionally too because you need to be picked up by a major label. The world needs to hear your extraordinary talent. It's not just the voice. It's not just the guitar playing. It's the whole package. It's a sensibility that comes across. I know that I'm not the only one who would be disappointed not to have been part of this. Like many on this list, I'm sure, the means to travel to Europe was beyond me. I have never been to Europe and this would have been the perfect centrepiece to a trip of a lifetime. Unfortunately, it was not to be so, I am eternally grateful to have these wonderful recording to live it in my mind. I can fantasise that I was there with you all. As a thank you to those who participated and by these recordings allowed me and everyone else on the list to share, I have, with the help of Dave Blackburn, organised the track listing, chronologically in a series of CDs and designed covers for them. There are 8 CDs in all, organised into Friday, Saturday and Sunday as well as a bonus CD of the daytime sessions. Each one is a double CD and there are disc images too for those who want a printed disc. Dave is not sure of the track order of the day sessions so, if anyone who attended can remember, please contact me and I will adjust that CD track list accordingly. It has slipped my mind at the moment who gave a link to the series of photographs they took at the event. I hope you don't mind but, I pinched them to use on the inside covers for the CDs. They seemed appropriate and really gives a sense of being there. It is my dream to one day host the first Oz JoniFest. In fact, it would be the first one in the Southern Hemisphere. I know that it would be quite a huge undertaking and a bit of a risk because of the distance most of you would have to travel but I will do some research into its viability. I know that it could be fantastic if I can pull it off. There are so many excellent places to hold it but there are many things to consider. Most of all, accessibility. Many of them are easy to reach by car but when people are flying in, there needs to be an easier way to reach it. This could only work if enough people were willing to spend the money and take the time to attend. There are only a small handful of JMDLers in Australia so, it would not work if it were just the locals. I would be counting on Melissa and Don in Sydney and I've had a few tentative nods from several others who I have discussed this with so far. Possibilities are Marion in Sweden, Bob Muller and Kakki I think said she might make it. Sydney is about a 16 hour flight from California but considerably more from Europe. There are package deals available which you should look into. The new Virgin Pacific Airlines begin operations this year between the USA and Australia. To make it worthwhile, I would recommend a longer holiday in the region while you are here. New Zealand, Southeast Asia or even an outback adventure. Snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, a trip to the Gold Coast, Kakadu, wine tasting in the Barossa Valley or Hunter Valley, opal fossicking at Lightening Ridge or gold panning in Victoria. The possibilities are endless and I would be more than happy to give any assistance that you might need to arrange a further holiday while you're here. I will do some research into venues and costs and announce them as they come to hand. It may be possible to arrange this for around October, 2009 but if you need more time, then I could look into the following year. I do hope I (we) can pull this off. In the meantime, enjoy the music of Holycombe UK JoniFest 2008 and I hope you like my tribute to that event in my CD designs. I didn't download via Dave's link since I don't have that much memory space left on my computer but maybe I could download at least one of your cd:s. Which one do you think would be the most essential? About Australian jonifest in 2009 or maybe 2010: if the financial crisis doesn't eat up all my savings I will finally take the opportunity to fulfil my dream of going to Australia. (At this moment, my savings have dropped in value to nearly half of the original amount!) I am pleased to see that you plan the fest for October and not at the end of August/beginning of September. That would be the absolutely worst time for me, there would be no chance for me to get away from work. That's why I couldn't attend the Holycombe fest, big boo-hoo. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the chance that you can arrange it! If this is going to happen, I will stay in Australia for at least three weeks, maybe a month. I'll get back to you for advice of where to stay and what to see when the time comes. Marion ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Oct 2008 01:29:38 +1100 From: Mark-Leon Thorne Subject: Re: Holycombe and next jonifest in Australia Hi Marion. Thanks for your kind words. These were not CDs that I uploaded but CD covers that I designed for Dave's recordings. If you are having difficulties with the whole audio file from Dave, I could try to upload just one of the CDs if you like. As for Oz JoniFest, I just threw October out there. It is a good time of year, weather wise. It is Spring so, not too hot and not too cold. Once I get some feedback from everyone, I will narrow it down to a time of year that suits the majority of people. I'll start the ball rolling by suggesting October. Also, I am suggesting 2009 and I'll wait for feedback about that too to see if it is viable for the majority of people. I do hope it works out for you in the end, Marion. We have spoken about this before and I am really hoping the dates and everything work for you because I know you have been looking for this excuse to come to Australia. I think it is wise that you are planning for a longer holiday. It makes the expense and distance worthwhile. I am a member of two web based groups - Couch Surfers and Hospitality Club that offers free accommodation to travelers. Backpackers mainly. I only have my living room floor to offer but many people have been satisfied with that. It has given me the opportunity to meet some fascinating people from all over the world and to play tour guide. I often help with all kinds of things for them, from giving them directions and providing maps and places where they are interested to see to driving tours in the mountains, etc to taking in a performance at the Sydney Opera House with them and walking tours around the city. I love it. It helps them and they are grateful but it helps me to get out of the house and socialise. I think I was a tour guide in another life. I love the idea of playing host. I have organised a couple of large events before at university so, I think I could manage this. I think you will all have a great time. I will make sure of it. Mark in Sydney. My own THOSL story: It was sometime in 1978 and I was 20 and in the Air Farce Force. I was into the second half of my tour of duty near Fortuna, ND. I'd already played my cassette of Hejira about a thousand times by then, and nearly worn out a cheap bootleg cassette (picked up in Regina, SK) of Miles Of Aisles. A boyfriend gave me a used vinyl copy of Court And Spark, and I used it to "transform" my friend Mary Romero's theretofore poor opinion of Joni's music. Not long before leaving my man at a North Dakota junction (for Phoenix, where I soon came out of the closet), the by-then-ex-boyfriend gave me a brand new copy of THOSL, which I promptly recorded onto cassette for my trip. Smoking weed and driving through Eastern Wyoming in a little white VW Bug, seeing the white buttes pop up here and yonder in that vast prairie, being blown about by the winds of a wildly violent thunderstorm, listening to THOSL and James Taylor's Flag ... as always, feeling a bit uncomfortable with and yet completely enthralled by this new-to-me work by Joni ... Great memories, still. Lori Santa Rosa, CA ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Oct 2008 09:43:45 +1100 From: Mark-Leon Thorne Subject: Re: The Gift of Holycombe That would be cool. I did download all the files and I agree that they are absolutely wonderful. And I'd love to go to Australia, for a fest or otherwise, but will either need to win a lottery or wait for my next lifetime to do that, unfortunately. Tired of spam? Yahoo! I also thought Joe Jackson at Town Hall in Manhattan (2005) was phenominal. And Todd Rundgren did a show (about 10-15 years ago) in the "half-round" at Westbury Music Fair for a half-capacity crowd that was like being in his living room PLUS he did all his best stuff, and I remember my friend Bob & I saying that THAT was the best show he ever played.
