I would have loved to see both of them. Bette used to tour Australia quite a bit back in the day. Elton too. I would have loved to have seen that wonder show he did in Melbourne with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. I have been a total slacker when it comes to going to concerts. Maybe because I haven't had the money when they were touring or maybe because I hate to go out alone and nobody was interested in going with me. I can count on one hand the number of concerts I've seen. The first was Cher (amazing show, very theatrical). Next was Mike Oldfield - a very shy person. I was given last minute tickets to David Bowie's, Serious Moonlight show and went alone. Excellent. Then there were one or two small, intimate performances. Deborah Conway and Tidas at Tilly's in Canberra was wonderful and I was in awe of David Bridie down the road at the Annandale. As I've expressed here before, I will be kicking myself till the day I die that I missed Joni's only performance at the Sydney Opera House and my best friend went and hated it. He dissed the whole show and reaffirmed his dislike of Joni. Unbelievable. What really blew me away was the fact that much of his own philosophies on life are so similar to Joni's. I really thought he'd relate. His words exactly were, "She was like a walking Vogue cover". He claimed that she didn't relate to the audience at all, came out on stage, performed the songs and left without a word. I just find that hard to believe. His impression of Joni Mitchell was that she was self absorbed, impatient and full of herself. Go figure. I am apprehensive of crowds, you see:-). I did see Leonard Cohen in 1984, great show but looong, and the Kinks in the seventies plus some less known bands, and as far as I remember, they were alright. Like Mark, I missed my chance to see Joni, for me it was the Isle of Wight festival that I could have gone to but didn't. I did buy two of her concert dvs, Shadows and Light and Painting with words and music. SAL was/is not a favourite of mine. Joni appears rather aloof, as if her heart is not in her performance. She hardly addresses the audience, and she often has her back turned on them. She does perform her songs as professionally as could be expected but no more. I prefer PWWAM. The audience is much smaller, Joni connects with the audience, tells stories and jokes, dances, sings and plays beautifully. I watch that dvd a lot! To me, that is the greatest live act. Marion, who just missed another concert. Pink Floyd 'The Wall' when I was 4 rows from the front, for the sheer spectacle and sentiment expressed. Most recent greatest live acts were at Holycombe, at this year's Joni Fest. Non stop greatest live music morning to night. Everywhere I went, everyone I sang with (not least the 4 am club) and everyone I saw perform. Greatest live moment going through my mind currently - shaking my thing with Oddmund to the incredible version of 'Black Crow'. I think Joni's demeanor changes with the size of the venue. She seems to be much more comfortable and communicative in an intimate setting and less likely to be so in a large arena. The Joni/Dylan/Van concerts at the Gorge rank up there at the top of my list of live performances. All 3 performers were in top form. But the 'Both Sides Now' concert with full orchestra and Herbie Hancock sitting in for one song at the Concord Pavillion was more special in some ways because we were closer to the stage and it was all Joni. She seemed more relaxed and a bit more chatty than at the Gorge, although, the Concord Pavillion is not a small venue. Also the crowd was much more respectful than at the Gorge where people talked and got up and down all during Joni's performance. I have to agree with Jerry about Bette Midler. I've only seen her once way back in the 80s on her 'No Frills' tour. I have rarely seen a performer throw themselves into a performance as much as Bette did during that concert. She was incendiary. One of my top live performance experiences. I saw Hendricks and Ross at Jazz Alley, a club in Seattle. Very intimate setting. The two masters of vocalese were both in their 70s at the time but their singing was as precise, spot-on and as energetic as ever. Phenomenal show and we were sitting right in front of the stage. I've seen Rickie Lee Jones 3 times now. The best was at the Moore theater during her 'Evening of My Best Day' tour. We were 2nd row center and Rickie had a fantastic ensemble of musicians backing her. A natural high walking out of that one. Emmylou Harris at the Pier is another high point for me. I've seen her twice at that particular venue which is no longer in use for concerts. It was on a pier on the Seattle waterfront. So you were surrounded by water on 3 sides and the Seattle skyline was on the 4th side. The 2nd Emmylou concert I saw there was the most memorable. It was after the release of 'Red Dirt Girl' and she had Spyboy accompanying her. Lots of songs from both 'Wrecking Ball' and 'Red Dirt Girl' with some gems from her back catalogue thrown in. And Dave Matthews surprised the crowd by appearing at the end of the concert to duet with Emmylou on 'My Antonia'. Not sure how I would rank them but those are my top 'live act' experiences. There are a lot of great performers that I have never seen perform live so I can't draw from a long list. But those are the best of what I have been able to experience over the years. > > Marion, who just missed another concert. The Moody Blues play > Copenhagen > today but I got news of this too late, tickets were already sold > out. I saw The Moody Blues at the Gorge with an orchestra about 10 years ago. It was a good concert but the sound didn't seem very well balanced to me. I'm not sure that a large, outdoor venue was the best setting accoustically for the blend of electric instruments with traditional orchestral instruments. The sound has to be pretty loud to reach the people sitting at the back towards the top of the natural amphitheatre. We were seated in the reserved seats on the 'floor' in front of the stage, and the orchestra was miked so it seemed too loud and somewhat distorted. Still, experiencing 'Nights in White Satin' live is something I will never forget. But those are > the best of what I have been able to experience over the years. > Just thought of a few I left out of my list. Talking Heads performed their 'Stop Making Sense' show at the Seattle Arena before the film was released. It was amazing. David Byrne walked onto a bare stage at the beginning with a guitar and a boom box and performed 'Psycho Killer'. As the show went on, different parts of the band were brought on stage on moving platforms. There were projected images of words and pictures over the band and the performances were phenonmenal. Some songs from The Tom Tom Club spin-off thrown in as well. I saw 'The Pretenders at the same venue in the same year, touring after the release of 'Learning to Crawl'. Chrissie and all were in top form and it was an excellent concert. A great band with a great front woman, all in their prime, tearing it up. Back when I was in college around 1973 or so, I went to the Iowa State Fair, of all places, with my parents and sister. We saw Liza Minelli there performing on a stage set up on a racetrack. We were sitting in a grandstand. Liza was riding on the success of the film 'Cabaret'. She was young, enchanting and at the peak of her talent. The crowd loved her and it was a great show in a place you wouldn't expect it. That very same hour I saw this picture of Joni's, I went for my mail and came across a beautiful invitation with a beautiful picture of a woman in Frida Kahlo costume and on this scheduled bilingual performance postcard scheduled for October 17th and to be presented at the Instituto Cultural De Mexico about 'Frida--Un Canto De Dolor' '~~Frida-~A Song About Pain,~~' and was awestruck at the resemblance of the woman who is to potray Frida to our Joni.
