I think one of them was President Garfield (assassinated in office), whom my father always thought we might be related to (there *are* Garfields in the family tree), and who shares both my birthday *and* my left-handedness. (There are also a significant number of lefty--I wish!--Presidents, disproportionate to the population.) Of course, my dad also liked to think he was related to the pirate Blackbeard, because there are a lot of ancestors named Teach. Did anyone else notice during the debate--if I'm not mistaken, I think BOTH Obama and McCain are left-handed. I find it quite dull (perhaps it is just too subtle for me and the problem lies within, but i will continue to blame the album). I agree about STAS, even though i did suggest adding songs in there. I might go and do a clouds mix with your suggestions and see how it runs for me. Without rooting through every bootleg i've ever gotten me hands on, i'm pretty certain i don't know cara's castle. I'm particularly drawn to Sharon because I love the "reality" of the story and it is one of my favorite songs. That's why I made the pilgrimage to Mandolin Bros. a while back... I wonder if Sharon would like to retrace Joni's steps in the making of that song to see what she was singing about? But the character that has a special place in my heart, and possibly the most famous in Joni's songs (and one who doesn't even have a name) is the guy who "plays real good, for free." Again, a very true story, one in which Joni has a kind of relationship with someone she doesn't even know, and one whom she (obviously) highly respects. I've always seen the street performers whenever I go into NYC (and, of course, in other cities) and whenever I do, I think of Joni and "For Free." I also have thrown quite a few coins and dollars into guitar/sax/keyboard cases and hats to try and support this great tradition of "playin' real good for free." About 180 songs in all (!!!!), and we didn't even record the Thursday night, so that gives an idea of how much music was played. As AIFF files they will fill about 10Gb so, when they are ready to distribute, I plan on these methods: 1) one download link of all the performances grouped in folders according to performers in AAC format which will be about 1-1.5 GB. This requires iTunes, which at this point I imagine accommodates almost everyone. The sound quality of AAC is superior to mp3 so that is my preference. There is almost no compromise between AAC and the original so I would endorse these. 2) If you want the uncompressed AIFF files I think everything will fit on 3 or 4 DVD-Rs. But I'd prefer to do a "tape tree" of these so I don't get too deep into burning/packaging/shipping. I'd probably send a set to an initial person in the US and another in the UK who can either make copies or pass on the discs after transfer to their computers. I imagine people will want to burn CDs of their favorite perfomances after they have listened through, which again is bonehead simple in iTunes. There are many many gems amongst these so you can look forward to some great listening... I'd hate to dump anything from it, but you picked the 2 that would be first to go if something had to, just as Nathan LaFreneer and Pirate would be the first to go from STAS, even though your treatment of it was nice, at its core it's too quirky and disjointed. I really like "Roses Blue." Especially with all the mysterious references to astrology and such. Very dark and foreboding. And it's perhaps the only recording by Joni that could be classified as sounding "psychedelic." In my opinion, "Roses Blue" is somewhat underrated (while I'd say that "Amelia," "Song For Sharon" and particularly "Coyote"--all from 'Hejira'--are generally overrated, with their droning, repetitive melodies). In fact, next to the brilliant Paul Rothchild-produced opener "Tin Angel," it just might be my second-favorite song from 'Clouds.' Express Warning: Slight political comment ahead (YO, Patti)! :-D VERY interesting that everyone LOVES this sensational version of "Rainy Night House" so much, while the disc it's taken from ('Miles of Aisles') always seems to languish somewhat in the (JMDL) album poll. This is especially troubling to me since it tied as one of her two most commercially successful recordings (along with 'Court And Spark,' it reached #2 on the Billboard album charts) shortly after its late-1974 release date (note: by far, the closest she's ever come--before or since--has been #4 with 'The Hissing of Summer Lawns' in '75). Gotta say it all kinda reminds me of the way our current--and inexplicably baffling--Presidential polls are shaping up. And THIS after the worst political administration in U.S. history. I mean, I really don't understand how they can even be CLOSE after all the corruption and lies of the past eight years. But, maybe it's just me. The wonderful, "reworked" arrangements on 'MOA' (by Tom Scott and The L.A. Express) still sound so organic and fresh--particularly when compared to the dated, artificial sound of 'THOSL.' And Joni's strong, soaring vocals on this historic tour remain the greatest of her entire career. Therefore, I think that comparing the brilliant 'Miles of Aisles' to the comparatively disastrous 'The Hissing of Summer Lawns' (or even 'Hejira,' for that matter) is sorta like comparing Barack Obama to John McCain. To me, there IS no comparison. IMO, the hands-down winners of BOTH should be obvious to anyone with ears and/or a functioning brain! :-o So, vote OBAMA (...and 'Miles of Aisles') !!!
